Thus have I heard: |
At one time the Buddha was staying at Anāthapiṇḍada’s Park in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī. | |
At that time the World-Honored One told the bhikṣus, "If a bhikṣu dwells in an empty and quiet place, under a tree, or in an empty house, and sometimes feels terror and his hair stands on end, he should contemplate the matters of the Tathāgata, the Dharma, and the Saṃgha..." and so on, as explained in detail above. "When contemplating the matters of the Tathāgata, the Dharma, and the Saṃgha, the terror is immediately dispelled. |
"Bhikṣus! In the past, when Śakra, Lord of the Devas, was fighting with the asuras, he told the thirty-three devas, 'Good sirs, when the devas and asuras are fighting, if you feel terror and your hair stands on end, you should contemplate my banner of subduing the enemy. When you contemplate that banner, the terror will be dispelled.' In this way, bhikṣus, if you feel terror and your hair stands on end while dwelling in an empty and quiet place, under a tree, or in an empty house, you should contemplate the Tathāgata: 'The Tathāgata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened One, up to the Buddha, the World-Honored One.' When you contemplate him, the terror will be dispelled. Why is that? Although that Śakra, Lord of the Devas, is still bound by greed, anger, and delusion, and has not attained liberation from birth, old age, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, and distress, and still feels terror, fear, and the need to flee and take refuge, he still tells the thirty-three devas to contemplate his banner of subduing the enemy. How much more so the Tathāgata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened One, up to the Buddha, the World-Honored One, who is free from greed, anger, and delusion, and has attained liberation from birth, old age, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, and distress, and is free from all terror, fear, and the need to flee and take refuge. How could he not be able to dispel all terror when contemplated?" |
After the Buddha had spoken this sūtra, the bhikṣus who heard what the Buddha had said rejoiced and received it respectfully. | |
