Thus have I heard: | 闻如是: |
At one time, the Buddha was at Anāthapiṇḍada's Park in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī. | 一时,佛在舍卫国祇树给孤独园。 |
At that time, the World-Honored One was teaching the Dharma to an innumerable assembly. At that time, a bhikṣu in the assembly had this thought: "May the Tathāgata instruct me in the teachings." The World-Honored One knew the thought in the bhikṣu's mind and said to the bhikṣus: "If a bhikṣu has this thought: 'The Tathāgata personally instructs me,' then that bhikṣu will be fully endowed with pure precepts, without any flaws or taints, and will practice tranquility and insight, delighting in solitary places. | 尔时,世尊与无央数之众而为说法。尔时,坐上有一比丘,便生此念:「愿如来告我有所论说。」尔时,世尊知比丘心中所念,告诸比丘:「若有比丘生此念:『如来躬教训我。』彼比丘戒具清净,无有瑕秽,修行止观,乐闲静之处。 |
If a bhikṣu wishes to seek robes, food and drink, bedding and mats, and medicine for illness, he should also be fully endowed with precepts and virtues, practice in solitary places, and be in harmony with tranquility and insight. | 「若比丘意欲求衣被、饮食、床敷卧具、病瘦医药者,亦当戒德成就,在空闲处而自修行,与止观共相应。 |
If a bhikṣu wishes to seek contentment, he should be mindful of being fully endowed with the virtues of precepts, practice in solitary places, and be in harmony with tranquility and insight. | 「若复比丘欲求知足者,当念戒德具足,在闲静处而自修行,与止观共相应。 |
If a bhikṣu wishes to be recognized by the four groups of followers, kings, and all sentient beings, he should be mindful of being fully endowed with the virtues of precepts. | 「若复比丘欲求使四部之众、国王、人民有形之类所见识知,彼当念戒德具足。 |
If a bhikṣu wishes to seek the four dhyānas, without regret in the middle, and not changing, he should be mindful of accomplishing the virtues of precepts. | 「若复比丘意欲求四禅,中无悔心,亦不变易,当念戒德成就。 |
If a bhikṣu wishes to seek the four bases of supernormal power, he should also be fully endowed with the virtues of precepts. | 「若复比丘意欲求四神足,彼亦当戒德具足。 |
If a bhikṣu wishes to seek the eight liberations without obstruction, he should be mindful of being fully endowed with the virtues of precepts. | 「若复比丘意欲求八解脱门而无罣碍,彼当念戒德具足。 |
If a bhikṣu wishes to seek the divine ear to hear, to hear the sounds of gods and humans, he should be mindful of being fully endowed with the virtues of precepts. | 「若复比丘意欲求天耳彻听,闻天人闻声,当念戒德具足。 |
If a bhikṣu wishes to seek to know the thoughts in the minds of others, and their incomplete faculties, he should also be mindful of being fully endowed with the virtues of precepts. | 「若复比丘意欲求知他人心中所念,诸根缺漏,彼亦当念戒德具足。 |
If a bhikṣu wishes to seek to know the minds of sentient beings, whether they have a mind of desire or a mind without desire, a mind of anger or a mind without anger, a mind of delusion or a mind without delusion, to know them as they are. Whether they have a mind of attachment or a mind without attachment, a mind of acceptance or a mind without acceptance, to know them as they are. Whether they have a distracted mind or an undistracted mind, a sick mind or a healthy mind, a limited mind or an unlimited mind, a painful mind or a painless mind, a mind in samādhi or a mind not in samādhi, a liberated mind or an unliberated mind, to know them as they are. If one wishes to be like this, one should be mindful of being fully endowed with the virtues of precepts. | 「若复比丘意欲求知众生心意,有欲心、无欲心,有瞋恚心、无瞋恚心,有愚痴心、无愚痴心,如实知之。有爱心、无爱心,有受心、无受心,如实知之。有乱心、无乱心,有疾心、无疾心,有少心、无少心,有量心、无量心,有痛心、无痛心,有三昧心、无三昧心,有解脱心、无解脱心,如实知之。欲如是者,当念戒德具足。 |
If a bhikṣu wishes to attain immeasurable spiritual powers, to divide one body into countless forms, and then reassemble them into one, to rise and sink freely, to transform the body up to the Brahma Heaven, he should be mindful of being fully endowed with the virtues of precepts. | 「若复比丘意欲得无量神足,分一身作无数,复还合为一,踊没自在,化身乃至梵天,彼当念戒德具足。 |
If a bhikṣu wishes to seek to remember his past lives for countless eons, whether one life, two lives, up to a thousand lives, a hundred thousand million lives, an eon of formation, an eon of destruction, an eon of formation and destruction, countless eons, that he was born and died here and there, with such and such a name and surname, and that he passed away from there and was reborn here, and to remember such countless eons of events, he should be mindful of being fully endowed with the virtues of precepts, without any other thoughts. | 「若复比丘意欲求自忆宿世无数劫事,或一生、二生,乃至千生、百千亿生、成劫、败劫、成败之劫,不可称计,我曾死此生彼,名某、字某,或从彼终,来生此间,自忆如此无数劫事,当念戒德具足而无他念。 |
If a bhikṣu wishes to seek the divine eye, to see through and observe the classes of sentient beings, their good and bad destinies, good and bad appearances, whether beautiful or ugly, to know them as they are. Or if there are sentient beings who act with evil body, speech, and mind, slander the sages, and upon the destruction of their bodies and the end of their lives, are born in the hells. Or if there are sentient beings who act with good body, speech, and mind, do not slander the sages, have right views in their minds, and upon the destruction of their bodies and the end of their lives, are born in the good destinies of the heavens. If one wishes to be like this, one should be mindful of being fully endowed with the virtues of precepts. | 「若复比丘意欲求天眼,彻视观众生类,善趣、恶趣,善色、恶色,若好、若丑,如实知之。或复有众生身、口、意行恶,诽谤贤圣,身坏命终,生地狱中。或复有众生身、口、意行善,不诽谤贤圣,心意正见,身坏命终,生善处天上。意欲如是者,当念戒德具足。 |
If a bhikṣu wishes to seek to exhaust the taints, to attain the liberation of the mind free from taints, the liberation through wisdom: the end of birth and death, the establishment of the practice of purity, the accomplishment of what is to be done, no more rebirth, to know it as it is. He should be mindful of being fully endowed with the virtues of precepts, contemplate within himself without any confused thoughts, and dwell in a secluded place. | 「若复比丘意欲求尽有漏,成无漏心解脱、智慧解脱:生死已尽,梵行已立,所作已办,更不复受胎,如实知之。彼当念戒德具足,内自思惟无有乱想,居在闲处。 |
"Bhikṣus! You should be mindful of being fully endowed with the virtues of precepts, without any other thoughts, with accomplished and complete deportment, with few faults and always fearful, let alone great ones! If a bhikṣu wishes to discuss with the Tathāgata, he should always be mindful of being fully endowed with the virtues of precepts; having been fully endowed with the virtues of precepts, he should be mindful of being fully endowed with hearing; having been fully endowed with hearing, he should be mindful of being fully endowed with giving; having been fully endowed with giving, he should be mindful of being fully endowed with wisdom, liberation, and knowledge and vision of liberation. If a bhikṣu is fully endowed with the body of precepts, the body of concentration, the body of wisdom, the body of liberation, and the body of knowledge and vision of liberation, he will be seen, venerated, and respected by devas, nāgas, and spirits, and will be revered by devas and humans. Therefore, bhikṣus! You should be mindful of being fully endowed with the five parts of the Dharma body, which is a field of merit in the world, unsurpassed by others. Thus, bhikṣus! You should train in this way." | 「诸比丘!当念戒德具足,无他余念,威仪成就具足,少过常恐,何况大者!若有比丘意欲使如来共论者,常念戒德具足;已戒德具足,当念闻具足;闻已具足,当念施具足;施已具足,当念智慧具足,解脱知见,皆悉具足。若比丘戒身、定、慧身、解脱身、解脱知见身具足者,便为天、龙、鬼神所见供养,可敬、可贵,天、人所奉。是故,诸比丘!当念五分法身具足者,是世福田,无能过者。如是,诸比丘!当作是学。」 |
At that time, the bhikṣus, having heard the Buddha's teaching, joyfully received and practiced it. | 尔时,诸比丘闻佛所说,欢喜奉行。 |
