Chapter 9

Thus have I heard:

At one time, the Buddha was at Anāthapiṇḍada's Park in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī.

At that time, the World-Honored One told the bhikṣus, "It is like a mother who is deeply faithful and has only one child. She always thinks, 'How can I teach him to become a person?'"

At that time, the bhikṣus said to the World-Honored One, "World-Honored One! We do not understand this meaning. The World-Honored One is the root of all dharmas. Whatever the Tathāgata explains, we will accept without fail. We only pray that the World-Honored One will explain this profound Dharma to the bhikṣus. Having heard it, we will uphold it and practice it."

At that time, the World-Honored One told the bhikṣus, "Listen carefully! Listen carefully! Consider it well, and I will explain the meaning to you."

The bhikṣus replied, "Yes, World-Honored One!" At that time, the bhikṣus received the Buddha's instruction.

The World-Honored One said, "Just as that Upāsaka has a sincere mind and gives this instruction: 'Now that you are at home, you should be like the elder Jāṇussoṇi and also like the young elephant. Because this is the limit, this is the measure. The World-Honored One's disciples who have attained realization are called the elder Jāṇussoṇi and the young elephant.' If the young man wishes to shave his beard and hair, put on the three Dharma robes, and go forth to study the path, he should be like the bhikṣus Śāriputra and Maudgalyāyana. Because this is the limit, this is the measure. They are called the bhikṣus Śāriputra and Maudgalyāyana! Study the true Dharma well, do not engage in wrong actions, and do not give rise to unwholesome dharmas. If you give rise to this thought of attachment, you will fall into the three evil destinies. With a good mind and concentration, what is not obtained can be obtained, what is not attained can be attained, and what has not been realized can now be realized. Because, bhikṣus! The weight of faith offerings is truly unbearable and prevents one from attaining the path. Therefore, bhikṣus! Do not give rise to thoughts of attachment, and if they have arisen, eliminate them. Thus, bhikṣus! You should train in this way."

At that time, the bhikṣus heard what the Buddha said and joyfully practiced it.
