9.2 （二）优婆斯

Thus have I heard: | 闻如是： |
At one time, the Buddha was at Anāthapiṇḍada's Park in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī. | 一时，佛在舍卫国祇树给孤独园。 |
At that time, the World-Honored One said to the bhikṣus, "The lay devotee Dhuta has only one daughter. How should she be taught and guided to perfection?" | 尔时，世尊告诸比丘：「笃信优婆斯唯有一女，彼当云何教训成就？」 |
At that time, the bhikṣus said to the World-Honored One, "We do not understand this meaning, World-Honored One! The World-Honored One is the root of all dharmas. Whatever the Tathāgata explains, we will accept without fail. We only pray that the World-Honored One will explain this profound Dharma to the bhikṣus. Having heard it, we will uphold it." | 尔时，诸比丘白世尊曰：「我等，世尊！不解此义。世尊是诸法之本，如来所陈，靡不承受。唯愿世尊与诸比丘说此深法，闻已奉行。」 |
At that time, the World-Honored One said to the bhikṣus, "Listen carefully! Listen carefully! Consider it well, and I will explain the meaning for you." | 尔时，世尊告诸比丘：「谛听！谛听！善思念之，吾当为汝分别其义。」 |
The bhikṣus replied, "Yes." At that time, the bhikṣus received the Buddha's instruction. | 诸比丘对曰：「如是。」尔时，诸比丘从佛受教。 |
The World-Honored One said, "Just as that faithful upāsaka instructs his daughter, saying, 'Now that you are at home, you should be like Guṣṭha Upāsaka and Nanda's mother. Because this is the limit, this is the measure. The World-Honored One's disciples who have attained realization are Guṣṭha Upāsaka and Nanda's mother.' If you wish to shave your head and beard, put on the three Dharma robes, and go forth to study the path, you should be like the bhikṣuṇī Cintāmaṇi and the bhikṣuṇī Utpala-varṇa. Because this is the measure, this is the limit. The bhikṣuṇī Cintāmaṇi and the bhikṣuṇī Utpala-varṇa are good at studying the true Dharma, not engaging in wrong practices or giving rise to unwholesome dharmas. If you give rise to such thoughts of attachment, you will fall into the three evil destinies. With good thoughts and single-minded focus, what is not accomplished will be accomplished, what is not obtained will be obtained, and what has not been realized will now be realized. Because, bhikṣus! The weight of faith offerings is truly unbearable, causing one to not attain the path. Therefore, bhikṣus! Do not give rise to thoughts of attachment, and if they have arisen, they should be extinguished. Thus, bhikṣus! You should train in this way." | 世尊告曰：「犹彼笃信优婆斯教训女曰：『汝今在家者，当如拘雠多罗优婆斯、难陀母。所以然者，此是其限，此是其量。世尊受证弟子，所谓拘雠多罗优婆斯、难陀母是。』若女意欲剃除须发，著三法衣，出家学道者，当如谶摩比丘尼、优钵花色比丘尼。所以然者，此是其量，此是其限。所谓谶摩比丘尼、优钵华色比丘尼，好学正法，莫作邪业，兴起非法；设汝生此染著之想，便] cf.【丽】当坠堕三恶趣中。善念专心，不果者果，不获者获，未得证者，今当受证。所以然者，诸比丘！信施之重，实不可消，令人不得至道之趣。是故，诸比丘！莫生染著之想，已生当灭。如是，诸比丘！当作是学。」 |
At that time, the bhikṣus, having heard the Buddha's teaching, joyfully received and upheld it. | 尔时，诸比丘闻佛所说，欢喜奉行。 |
