Saṃyuktāgama (2nd)

Thus have I heard:

Once, the Buddha was traveling in the country of Kosala. At that time, there was a forest dwelling place in that country. The World-Honored One was staying there with a large assembly of bhikṣus. At that time, the World-Honored One praised that dwelling place and spoke about the Dharma of forest dwelling.

At that time, the Brahma King knew that the Tathāgata was traveling in the country of Kosala, staying in a forest dwelling place with a group of bhikṣus, praising the forest dwelling place and speaking about the Dharma of forest dwelling. The Brahma King thought, "I should now go to where the Buddha is to praise and rejoice." The Brahma King then disappeared from there, like a strong man bending and stretching his arm, and came to where the Buddha was. He bowed his head at the Buddha's feet and sat to one side. He then spoke a verse:

In a quiet place with bedding, one should sever the fetters. If
one cannot enjoy it, one should return to the Sangha. One should
always correctly contemplate, control the faculties, and practice alms-begging. One who is
fully endowed with the precepts should go to an empty and quiet
place. Abandoning fear, firmly abide in fearlessness. One who has severed pride
should firmly abide in the middle. Thus, what I have heard should
not be doubted. One thousand arhats have severed birth and death here
Two hundred and fifty learners, one thousand and one hundred srota-āpannas, following
the flow and practicing the right path, will not go astray. I
cannot fully proclaim those who attain the paths and fruits. The reason
I cannot proclaim it is because of fear and lack of respect.

At that time, the Brahma King, having spoken this verse, bowed his head at the Buddha's feet and returned to his heavenly palace.
