Thus have I heard: |
Once, the Buddha was at Anāthapiṇḍada's Park in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī. At that time, Venerable Mahākāśyapa was staying in the hall of Viśākhā in the old garden. Then, at sunset, Venerable Kāśyapa arose from his meditation, went to where the Buddha was, bowed at the Buddha's feet, and sat to one side. The Buddha said to Kāśyapa, "You should instruct the bhikṣus and expound the Dharma for them. Why is that? I always instruct, and you should be the same. I always expound the Dharma for the bhikṣus, and you should be the same." |
Kāśyapa said to the Buddha, "These bhikṣus are difficult to instruct and cannot accept the teachings." | |
The Buddha said to Kāśyapa, "What causes and conditions do you see now that you do not expound the Dharma?" | |
Kāśyapa replied, "If they do not believe, they will lose good dharmas and become lazy, without shame or embarrassment. They will be ignorant and unwise, greedy for others' possessions, with minds of anger and harm, covered by the obscuration of sleep, agitated and restless, doubtful about the Dharma, deeply attached to the view of self, with minds defiled by afflictions. They will be joyful and angry, forgetful, without temporary stability. They will have such various unwholesome evil dharmas, definitely possessing them. Such people will not even have a little goodness, let alone progress in good dharmas. If there are people who possess faith, do not lose good dharmas, diligently practice without weariness, are able to cultivate shame and embarrassment, are wise people who practice good dharmas, are without greedy thoughts, are far from anger and resentment, eliminate the obscuration of sleep, have minds that are not agitated, are without doubt, are not attached to the view of self, have pure minds without defilement, are not joyful or angry, are able to abide in mindful thoughts, possess meditative concentration, and do not regress in good dharmas. If there are people who possess such various good dharmas, I would not say that their good dharmas remain still, let alone not increasing. Such people will increase in good dharmas day and night." |
The Buddha said to Kāśyapa, "So it is! So it is! As you have said. If they do not believe, they will lose good dharmas, and so on, up to such people will not even have a little goodness, let alone increase. If there are people who possess faith, do not lose good dharmas, and so on, up to I would not say that their good dharmas remain still, let alone increase." |
At that time, the bhikṣus heard what the Buddha said and joyfully practiced it. |
