Saṃyuktāgama

Thus have I heard:

At one time the Buddha was staying at Anāthapiṇḍada’s Park in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī.

At that time, the Venerable Mahākāśyapa was staying in the Deer Park Lecture Hall in the Eastern Garden of Śrāvastī. In the afternoon, he emerged from meditation and went to where the World-Honored One was. He bowed his head at the Buddha's feet and sat to one side.

The Buddha told Kāśyapa, "You should instruct and admonish the bhikṣus! Teach the Dharma to the bhikṣus, instruct and admonish them. Why is that? I always teach the Dharma to the bhikṣus, instruct and admonish them, and you should also do the same."

The Venerable Mahākāśyapa said to the Buddha, "World-Honored One! It is difficult to teach the Dharma to the bhikṣus now. If one teaches the Dharma, there will be bhikṣus who are impatient and displeased."

The Buddha told Kāśyapa, "What causes and conditions have you seen that make you say this?"

Mahākāśyapa said to the Buddha, "World-Honored One! If a bhikṣu has no faith and respect for good dharmas, he will regress when hearing the Dharma. If a person of evil wisdom has no diligence, shame, or wisdom in good dharmas, he will regress when hearing the Dharma. If a person is greedy, hateful, sleepy, agitated, doubtful, arrogant in body, angry, forgetful, unstable, and unwise, he will regress when hearing the Dharma. World-Honored One! Such evil people cannot even make their minds abide in good dharmas, let alone progress. One should know that for them, good dharmas will diminish day and night, and cannot increase.

World-Honored One! If a person has pure faith in good dharmas, he will not regress; if he has diligence, shame, and wisdom in good dharmas, he will not regress; if he is not greedy, hateful, sleepy, agitated, regretful, or doubtful, he will not regress; if his body is not arrogant and his mind is not defiled, if he is not angry, resentful, has a concentrated mind, right mindfulness, and wisdom, he will not regress. Such a person will increase in good dharmas day and night, let alone abiding in the mind. This person will always seek progress day and night, never regressing.

The Buddha told Kāśyapa, "So it is, so it is. Those who have no faith in good dharmas will regress..." and so on, as Kāśyapa had explained in detail.

At that time, Venerable Mahākāśyapa, having heard the Buddha's teaching, rejoiced and followed it. He rose from his seat, bowed, and departed.
