SA-2 161（一六一）

Thus have I heard:

如是我闻：

Once, the Buddha was at Jetavana Anāthapiṇḍada-ārāma in Śrāvastī. At that time, a god with doubled radiance came to where the Buddha was. His bodily radiance illuminated the entire Jetavana, shining brightly. He then sat to one side and spoke a verse:

一时，佛在舍卫国祇树给孤独园。时有一天，光色倍常，来诣佛所，身光显照，遍于祇洹，赫然大明，却坐一面，而说偈言：

Without joy, one cannot attain happiness. The
Thirty-three Heavens are renowned throughout the world
They are always inhabited by the gods there.

「不生欢喜园，　　终不能得乐。是三十三天，　　名称满世间，常是彼天人，　　之所居住处。」

At that time, the World-Honored One replied in verse:

尔时，世尊以偈答曰：

You are like a small infant, foolish, not within your
wisdom's reach. Such wonderful Dharma is spoken by the Arhats
All conditioned phenomena are impermanent, subject to arising and ceasing
When arising and ceasing cease, that is true peace and bliss.

「汝如小婴愚，　　非尔智所及，如斯之妙法，　　乃是罗汉语。诸行斯无常，　　是生灭之法，其生灭灭已，　　寂灭乃为乐。」

The god again praised in verse:

天复以偈赞曰：

I have already seen a brahmin enter parinirvāṇa in the past. Disgust
and fear have long been abandoned, able to liberate the world from attachment.

「往昔已曾见，　　婆罗门涅槃，嫌怖久弃舍，　　能度世间爱。」

At that time, after this god had spoken this verse, he joyfully returned to his palace.

尔时，此天说此偈已，欢喜还宫。
