SA 576（五七六） 欢喜园

Thus have I heard:

At one time, the Buddha was at Anāthapiṇḍada-ārāma in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī.

At that time, a certain god, with an extremely handsome appearance, came to where the Buddha was in the latter part of the night. He bowed his head at the Buddha's feet, withdrew and sat to one side. The light from his body illuminated the Anāthapiṇḍada-ārāma.

At that time, the god spoke a verse to the Buddha:

One cannot find happiness without dwelling in Nandana Grove, in the heavenly palace
of the Heaven of the Thirty-three, one attains the name of Heavenly Emperor.

At that time, the World-Honored One spoke a verse in reply:

You are ignorant, how can you know the words of the
arhat? All conditioned phenomena are impermanent, they are the law of
arising and ceasing. What arises must cease, the cessation of both is bliss.

At that time, the god-son spoke another verse:

I have long seen the brāhmaṇa attain parinirvāṇa, all
fears have passed, forever transcending worldly love and affection.

At that time, the god-son, having heard the Buddha's teaching, joyfully rejoiced, bowed his head at the Buddha's feet, and then disappeared.
