Thus have I heard: | 如是我闻: |
Once, the Buddha was at Anāthapiṇḍada's Park in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī. At that time, the bhikṣuṇī Sumā entered Śrāvastī to beg for alms, wearing her robe and carrying her alms bowl. After eating, she washed her bowl, put away her sitting mat, and headed for the forest of the blind. Māra, the Evil One, thought, "Now the bhikṣuṇī Sumā is wearing her robe and carrying her alms bowl, entering the city to beg for alms. After eating, she is washing her bowl, putting away her sitting mat, and heading for the forest of the blind." At that time, Māra transformed himself into a brāhman, standing by the side of the road, and said, "Noble one, where are you going?" | 一时,佛在舍卫国祇树给孤独园。尔时,苏摩比丘尼著衣持钵,入舍卫城乞食,食讫洗钵,收摄坐具,向得眼林。魔王波旬作是念:「今苏摩比丘尼,著衣持钵,入城乞食,食讫洗钵,收摄坐具,向得眼林。」尔时,波旬化作婆罗门,在路侧立,而作是言:「阿梨耶欲何所至?」 |
The bhikṣuṇī replied, "I now wish to go to that quiet place." | 比丘尼答言:「我今欲诣彼寂静处。」 |

At that time, the bhikṣuṇī thought: "Is this a person or a non-person who wants to harm me?" She entered concentration to observe and knew it was Māra. She then spoke a verse, saying: | 时比丘尼作如是念:「此为是人?是非人乎?而欲恼我。」入定观察,知是波旬,即说偈言: |

At that time, Māra thought: "The bhikṣuṇī Sumanā knows my mind well." He was sorrowful, regretful, ashamed, and returned to his palace. | 尔时,波旬而作是念:「苏摩比丘尼,善知我心。」忧愁悔恨,惭愧还宫。 |
