SA-2 216（二一六）

Thus have I heard:

Once, the Buddha was at Anāthapiṇḍada's Park in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī. At that time, the bhikṣuṇī Śāriputra put on her robe, took her alms bowl, entered the city to beg for food, finished eating, washed her bowl, put away her sitting mat, went to the forest of the blind, sat under a tree, and abided in the divine abode. At that time, Māra the Evil One thought this: "The Śramaṇa Gautama is at Anāthapiṇḍada's Park in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī. The bhikṣuṇī Śāriputra put on her robe, took her alms bowl, entered the city to beg for food, finished eating, washed her bowl, put away her sitting mat, went to the forest of the blind, sat under a tree, and abides in the divine abode." Having thought this, he transformed himself into a young brahmin, wishing to disturb her, and spoke a verse:

Why are you sitting under a tree now
weeping and shedding tears? Have you lost your
son? Are you alone in the forest, seeking a man?

At that time, the bhikṣuṇī thought: "Who is this? It is very deceitful. Is it a human or a non-human? Wishing to greatly disturb me." Entering concentration to observe, knowing it was Māra the Evil One, she spoke a verse:

I have already cut off affection and love, without desire, without
the thought of a son, sitting upright in the forest, without
sorrow, without distress. Having cut off all love, extinguished the darkness
of ignorance, attained the state of extinction, abiding in the undefiled
Dharma. Therefore, know that Pāpīyān has fallen into a losing position.

At that time, Pāpīyān thought: "The bhikṣuṇī Śāriputra knows my mind well." He was distressed, remorseful, ashamed, and returned to his palace.
