Saṃyuktāgama

Thus have I heard:

At one time the Buddha was staying at Anāthapiṇḍada’s Park in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī.

At that time, the nun Jīvaka Kuṇḍalakesā was staying in the Jeta Grove Anāthapiṇḍada-ārāma in Śrāvastī. In the morning, she put on her robes, took her alms bowl, and entered Śrāvastī for alms. After the meal, she returned to the monastery, put away her robes and bowl, washed her feet, took her sitting mat, put it on her shoulder, entered the Ānanda Grove, sat cross-legged under a tree, and entered the right concentration during the day.

At that time, Māra the Evil One thought: "Now the Śramaṇa Gautama is staying at Anāthapiṇḍada's Park in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī. The nun Jīvaka Kuṇḍalakesā is staying in the Jeta Grove Anāthapiṇḍada-ārāma in Śrāvastī. I shall now go and create obstacles for her." He then transformed himself into a young man of handsome appearance and went to the nun Jīvaka Kuṇḍalakesā, and spoke a verse:

Why are you grieving for your son, weeping and
sorrowful, sitting alone under a tree, seeking a man?

At that time, the nun Jīvaka Kuṇḍalakesā thought: "Who is frightening me? Is it a human or a non-human, or a cunning one?" Thinking thus, she had a decisive understanding: "It is Māra the Evil One who has come to disturb me." She then spoke a verse:

The boundless sons are all lost, this is the
limit of men, already crossed the limit of men
Not troubled, not sorrowful, the Buddha's teaching is done
All are free from the suffering of attachment, abandoning
all darkness. Having extinguished and realized, peacefully ending all
taints, I know you, the evil Māra, will perish
here on your own.

At that time, Māra the Evil One thought: "The nun Jīvaka Kuṇḍalakesā already knows my mind." Sorrowful, suffering, and distressed, he then disappeared.
