Saṃyuktāgama (2nd)

Thus have I heard:

Once, the Buddha was at Anāthapiṇḍada's Park in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī. At that time, the bhikṣuṇī Upacālā was staying at the King's Park Monastery. In the morning, she put on her robes, took her alms bowl, and entered Śrāvastī to beg for food. After begging for food, she washed her bowl and feet, took her sitting mat, went to the Eye-Obtaining Grove, sat upright and straight under a tree, and entered the divine state of abiding. At that time, Māra the Evil One thought, "Now the Śramaṇa Gautama is at Anāthapiṇḍada's Park in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī. At the King's Park Monastery, there is a bhikṣuṇī named Upacālā. In the morning, she put on her robes, took her alms bowl, and entered Śrāvastī to beg for food. After begging for food, she washed her feet, put away her sitting mat, went to the Eye-Obtaining Grove, sat upright and straight under a tree, and entered the divine state of abiding. I shall now go there to create confusion." Having thought this, he transformed himself into a young brahmin and went to her, asking the bhikṣuṇī, "Noble Lady, where do you wish to be reborn?"

The bhikṣuṇī replied, "I have no place to be reborn at all."

At that time, the young brahmin spoke a verse, saying:

The Heaven of the Thirty-three, the Heaven of Yāma, the Heaven of Tuṣita
the Heaven of Nirmāṇarati, and the Heaven of Paranirmitavaśavartin - these places are
extremely blissful. You should wish for and enjoy them, experiencing the supreme and wonderful things.

The bhikṣuṇī Upāsikā also spoke a verse, saying:

Although the Heaven of the Thirty-three, the Heaven of Yāma, the Heaven
of Tuṣita, the Heaven of Nirmāṇarati, and the Heaven of Paranirmitavaśavartin all
experience bliss, they are not free from the view of self and
will certainly be bound by Māra. The world is all in motion
and they too will return and change. There are no ordinary beings
who are free from the realm of Māra. The world is all
ablaze, the world is all emitting smoke. I delight in this place
where there is no motion, where all love is cut off, all
ignorance and darkness are extinguished, and the state of cessation is attained
abiding in the undefiled Dharma. Therefore, know that Pāpīyān has fallen into
a losing position.

At that time, the demon king thought, "This bhikṣuṇī knows my mind well." He was distressed, remorseful, ashamed, and returned to his palace.
