Thus have I heard: | 如是我闻: |
At one time the Buddha was staying at Anāthapiṇḍada’s Park in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī. | 一时,佛住舍卫国祇树给孤独园。 |
At that time, the nun Upacālā was also staying in the Jeta Grove, Anāthapiṇḍada’s Park in Śrāvastī. In the morning, she put on her robes, took her bowl, and entered Śrāvastī to beg for food. After eating, she returned to the monastery, put away her robes and bowl, washed her feet, took her sitting mat, put it on her shoulder, entered the Ānanda Grove, sat under a tree, and entered the right concentration. | 时,优波遮罗比丘尼亦住舍卫国王园比丘尼众中,晨朝著衣持钵,入舍卫城乞食。食已,还精舍,举衣钵,洗足毕,持尼师坛,著肩上,入安陀林,坐一树下,入昼正受。 |
At that time, Māra the Evil One thought, “Now the Śramaṇa Gautama is staying at Anāthapiṇḍada’s Park in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī. The nun Upacālā is also staying in the Jeta Grove, Anāthapiṇḍada’s Park in Śrāvastī. In the morning, she put on her robes, took her bowl, and entered Śrāvastī to beg for food. After eating, she returned to the monastery, put away her robes and bowl, washed her feet, took her sitting mat, put it on her shoulder, entered the Ānanda Grove, sat under a tree, and entered the right concentration. I shall now go and create obstacles for her.” He then transformed himself into a young man of handsome appearance and went to the nun Upacālā, speaking a verse: | 时,魔波旬作是念:「今沙门瞿昙住舍卫国祇树给孤独园。优波遮罗比丘尼亦住舍卫国王园比丘尼众中,晨朝著衣持钵,入舍卫城乞食,食已,还精舍,举衣钵,洗足毕,持尼师坛,著肩上,入安陀林,坐一树下,入昼正受。我今当往,为作留难。」即化作年少,容貌端正,至优波遮罗比丘尼所而说偈言: |

The nun Upacālā thought, "Who is this person trying to frighten me? Is it a human or a non-human? Is it a cunning person?" She realized, "It must be the evil Māra trying to create disturbances." She spoke a verse: | 优波遮罗比丘尼作是念:「此何等人?欲恐怖我?为人?为非人?为是奸狡人?」自思觉悟:「必是恶魔欲作娆乱。」而说偈言: |

At that time, Māra the Evil One thought, "The nun Upacālā already knows my mind." Feeling distressed, he disappeared. | 时,魔波旬作是念:「优波遮罗比丘尼已知我心。」内怀忧戚] cf.【丽】,即没不现。 |
