Saṃyuktāgama

Thus have I heard:

At one time the Buddha was staying at Anāthapiṇḍada’s Park in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī.

At that time, the nun Upacālā was also staying in the Jeta Grove, Anāthapiṇḍada’s Park in Śrāvastī. In the morning, she put on her robes, took her bowl, and entered Śrāvastī to beg for food. After eating, she returned to the monastery, put away her robes and bowl, washed her feet, took her sitting mat, put it on her shoulder, entered the Ānanda Grove, sat under a tree, and entered the right concentration.

At that time, Māra the Evil One thought, “Now the Śramaṇa Gautama is staying at Anāthapiṇḍada’s Park in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī. The nun Upacālā is also staying in the Jeta Grove, Anāthapiṇḍada’s Park in Śrāvastī. I shall now go and create obstacles for her.” He then transformed himself into a young man of handsome appearance and went to the nun Upacālā, speaking a verse:

In the Heaven of the Thirty-three, Yama, Tuṣita, Nirmāṇarati
and Paranirmitavaśavartin, they make vows to be reborn there.

The nun Upacālā thought, "Who is this person trying to frighten me? Is it a human or a non-human? Is it a cunning person?" She realized, "It must be the evil Māra trying to create disturbances." She spoke a verse:

In the Heaven of the Thirty-three, Yama, Tuṣita, Nirmāṇarati
and Paranirmitavaśavartin, these heavens are not free from conditioned
activities, thus they follow Māra's control. All worlds are
aggregates of various activities. All worlds are characterized by
movement and change. All worlds are constantly burning with
the fire of suffering. All worlds are filled with
smoke and dust. The immovable and unshakable do not
associate with ordinary beings. They do not follow the
path of Māra, but find joy in this place
free from all suffering and darkness. They realize quiescence
and abide in the exhaustion of defilements. Having awakened
you, evil Māra, will then be ground to dust and disappear.

At that time, Māra the Evil One thought, "The nun Upacālā already knows my mind." Feeling distressed, he disappeared.
