SA-2 27（二七）

Thus have I heard. Once, the Buddha was staying on Mount Gridhrakuta in Rajagriha. It was raining lightly with thunder and lightning. The World-Honored One was walking in the open air that night. At that time, Mara the Evil One thought, "The śramaṇa Gautama is staying on Mount Gridhrakuta in Rajagriha. It is raining lightly with thunder and lightning. The World-Honored One is walking in the open air that night. I shall go there to create obstacles for him." Having thought this, Mara pushed a large rock down from the mountain to where the Buddha was. But the rock broke into pieces on its own.

At that time, the World-Honored One spoke a verse, saying:

You may destroy Mount Gridhrakuta, reducing it to fine dust, and
shatter the great ocean and the earth, but you will never
be able to cause the one who is truly liberated to
give rise to fear or make their hair stand on end.

At that time, the Evil One thought, "The śramaṇa Gautama knows what I am thinking." He was distressed and miserable, and then disappeared, returning to his heavenly palace.
