Saṃyuktāgama

Thus have I heard:

At one time the Buddha was staying at Vulture Peak in Rājagṛha.

At that time, in the darkness of night, with a slight drizzle and lightning flashing, the World-Honored One left his room to walk in meditation.

At that time, Māra Pāpīyān thought: "Now the Śramaṇa Gautama is staying at Vulture Peak in Rājagṛha, in the darkness of night, with a slight drizzle and lightning flashing, he has left his room to walk in meditation. I shall go now to create obstacles for him." He took a large boulder in his hands, played with it, and went before the Buddha, breaking it into fine dust.

At that time, the World-Honored One thought: "The evil Māra Pāpīyān wants to create disturbances." He then spoke a verse:

If Vulture Peak Mountain is to be shattered
before me, it cannot move a single hair
of the Buddha who is equal in liberation
Even if all the mountains and earth within
the four seas are shattered into dust by
the relatives of carelessness,

At that time, Māra Pāpīyān thought: "The śramaṇa Gautama already knows my mind." He was inwardly distressed and disappeared.
