Thus have I heard: |
Once, the Buddha was at Jetavana Anāthapiṇḍada-ārāma in Śrāvastī. At that time, a god of majestic appearance and extraordinary complexion came to where the Buddha was. After paying homage, he sat to one side and spoke a verse, saying: | 一时佛在] cf.【丽】舍卫国祇树给孤独园。
Not by mere words can one be called a śramaṇa. This is truly the path to be pursued, accomplishing the firm footprints If there are those who are courageous and able to deeply cultivate meditation, attaining liberation, destroying the bonds of Māra. Whether one acts or does not act, both are said to be true Deceit and falsehood are without sincerity, discarded by the wise. One's own body is truly without attainment, falsely praising oneself to be arrogant. Deceitful and false speech is the great thief in the world.
|
At that time, the World-Honored One replied in verse: |
Not revealing one's own merits, not knowing the mental activities of others knowing and then entering nirvāṇa, able to liberate the world from attachment.
|
At that time, this god, having heard the Buddha's verse, said to the Buddha, "I truly have faults now. I only wish you would allow me to sincerely repent." At that time, the Buddha remained silent.
I now confess my faults, but you do not accept my repentance. Having an evil and unwholesome mind, I do not let go of resentment and dislike.
|
The World-Honored One again spoke a verse in reply to the god: |
Confessing one's faults and repenting, but not truly extinguishing them in the mind, how can one remove faults and attain goodness?
|
The god again spoke a verse, asking again: |
Who among people is without faults? Who among people is without mistakes? Who is free from ignorance? Who is always mindful?
|
At that time, the World-Honored One replied in verse: |
The Tathāgata, the Bhagavān, with right knowledge has attained liberation He has no faults, nor does he make mistakes. He has already transcended ignorance and is able to be mindful.
|
The gods also praised in verse: |
I have already seen a brāhman enter nirvāṇa in the past. He has long abandoned aversion and fear, and is able to liberate the world from attachment.
|
At that time, after this god had spoken this verse, he departed joyfully. | |
