Saṃyuktāgama

Thus have I heard:

At one time the Buddha was staying at Anāthapiṇḍada’s Park in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī.

At that time, a god with an extremely handsome appearance came to where the Buddha was in the latter part of the night. He bowed his head at the Buddha’s feet, and his entire body emitted a bright light that illuminated Anāthapiṇḍada’s Park.

At that time, the god spoke a verse, saying:

One cannot attain the path by always speaking or listening one-sidedly, but by
firm and correct transcendence. Contemplating the good and tranquil extinction, liberating oneself from
the bonds of Māra, one can speak of what can be practiced, but
not of what cannot be practiced. If one speaks of what cannot be
practiced, the wise will know it is not so. Not practicing what one
should, and saying one has done it, is the same as a thief.

At that time, the World-Honored One said to the god, "Do you have any complaints now?"

The god said to the Buddha, "I repent, World-Honored One! I repent, Well-Gone One!"

At that time, the World-Honored One smiled with joy.

At that time, the god spoke another verse:

I now regret my mistake, but the World-Honored One does not
accept it. Harboring evil thoughts, I complain and do not let go.

At that time, the World-Honored One spoke a verse in reply:

Though you speak words of regret, if your mind does not cease
how can you put an end to enmity? What is called cultivating goodness?

At that time, the god-son spoke another verse:

Who does not have faults? Who is without sin? Who
is without foolishness? Who can always be firm and steadfast?

At that time, the god-son spoke another verse:

I have long seen the brāhmaṇa attain parinirvāṇa
beyond all fears, forever transcending worldly love and affection.

At that time, the god-son, having heard the Buddha's teaching, rejoiced and was delighted. He bowed his head at the Buddha's feet and then disappeared.
