Once, the Buddha was at Anāthapiṇḍada's Park in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī. The Buddha then addressed the bhikṣus, saying, "There is one dharmic practice for bhikṣus, which, when practiced, contemplated, and cultivated much, leads to the cessation of the body and the mind being as they are intended, and to the cessation of the mind being as it is intended, without remainder. It is the practice of mindfulness of the Dharma. What is that one dharmic practice? It is the practice of mindfulness of breathing. If bhikṣus practice, contemplate, and cultivate much the mindfulness of breathing, it leads to the cessation of the body and the mind being as they are intended, and to the cessation of the mind being as it is intended, without remainder. It is the practice of mindfulness of the Dharma. This is the one dharmic practice for bhikṣus, which, when practiced, contemplated, and cultivated much, leads to the cessation of the body and the mind being as they are intended, and to the cessation of the mind being as it is intended, without remainder. It is the practice of mindfulness of the Dharma. If bhikṣus are able to practice, cultivate, contemplate, and cultivate much this one dharmic practice, they will attain the path." |
