Thus have I heard: |
At one time the Buddha was staying at Anāthapiṇḍada’s Park in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī. | |
At that time the World-Honored One addressed the bhikṣus, saying: "Cultivate mindfulness of inhalation and exhalation. If a bhikṣu cultivates mindfulness of inhalation and exhalation, and cultivates it extensively, he will attain mental and physical tranquility, with perception and contemplation, pacified, pure, and with clear discernment. What is meant by cultivating mindfulness of inhalation and exhalation extensively, attaining mental and physical tranquility, with perception and contemplation, pacified, pure, and with clear discernment? This bhikṣu, whether dwelling in a village or town, in the morning puts on his robe, takes his alms bowl, enters the village to beg for food, well-protecting his body, guarding the sense-doors, and well-restraining his mind. After begging for food, he returns to his dwelling place, puts away his robe and bowl, washes his feet, and then either enters a forest, an empty room, the shade of a tree, or an open space, sits upright with a straight body, focuses his mind on the front, cuts off worldly greed and love, is free from desire and pure, and is free from anger, sleepiness, agitation, regret, and doubt. He has transcended all doubts and has a determined mind towards all wholesome dharmas. He is far removed from the five hindrances and afflictions that weaken wisdom and obstruct the attainment of nirvāṇa. He focuses his mind on internal breathing, well-trains in focusing his mind on external breathing. He is aware of long and short breaths, and is well-trained in being aware of all bodily inhalations. He is aware of all bodily exhalations, and is well-trained in being aware of all bodily movements during inhalation. He is aware of all bodily movements during exhalation, and is well-trained in being aware of joy, bliss, and mental activity. He is aware of mental activity during inhalation, and is well-trained in being aware of mental activity during exhalation. He is aware of the mind, mental delight, mental concentration, and mental liberation during inhalation, and is well-trained in being aware of mental liberation during inhalation. He is aware of mental liberation during exhalation, and is well-trained in being aware of mental liberation during exhalation. He observes impermanence, observes cessation, observes dispassion, and observes cessation during inhalation, and is well-trained in observing cessation during inhalation. He observes cessation during exhalation, and is well-trained in observing cessation during exhalation. This is called cultivating mindfulness of inhalation and exhalation, attaining mental and physical tranquility, with perception and contemplation, pacified, pure, and with clear discernment." |
