Thus have I heard: |
At one time the Buddha was staying at Anāthapiṇḍada’s Park in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī. | |
At that time the World-Honored One told the bhikṣus, "Contemplate form as impermanent. Those who contemplate in this way are contemplating correctly. Those who contemplate correctly will give rise to disenchantment; those who are disenchanted will exhaust the craving for joy; those who exhaust the craving for joy are said to have liberated minds. |
Contemplate feeling, perception, volition, and consciousness as impermanent. Those who contemplate in this way are contemplating correctly. Those who contemplate correctly will give rise to disenchantment; those who are disenchanted will exhaust the craving for joy; those who exhaust the craving for joy are said to have liberated minds. |
"Thus, bhikṣus, those whose minds are liberated, if they wish to realize it for themselves, can realize it for themselves: 'My birth is ended, the holy life has been established, what was to be done has been done, I know that I will not be subject to any future lives.'" |
"The contemplation of impermanence, suffering, emptiness, and non-self is also like this." |
At that time, the bhikṣus, having heard the Buddha's teaching, joyfully received and practiced it. |
