Saṃyuktāgama

Thus have I heard:

At one time the Buddha was staying at Anāthapiṇḍada’s Park in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī.

At that time there was a bhikṣu whose appearance was ugly and difficult to look at, and he was despised by the other bhikṣus. He came to where the Buddha was.

At that time the World-Honored One was surrounded by the four assemblies. Seeing that bhikṣu coming, they all gave rise to a contemptuous thought and said to each other: "What kind of bhikṣu is that? Coming along the road, his appearance is ugly and difficult to look at, despised by others."

At that time the World-Honored One knew the thoughts in the minds of the bhikṣus and said to the bhikṣus: "Do you see that bhikṣu coming, his appearance very ugly, difficult to see, causing people to give rise to contempt?"

The bhikṣus said to the Buddha: "Yes, we have seen him."

The Buddha told the bhikṣus: "Do not have any contempt for that bhikṣu. Why is that? That bhikṣu has already exhausted all afflictions, done what was to be done, removed all heavy burdens, cut off all bonds of existence, has right knowledge, and his mind is well liberated. Bhikṣus! Do not falsely measure others. Only the Tathāgata can measure others."

That bhikṣu went to where the Buddha was, bowed his head at the Buddha's feet, and sat to one side.

At that time, the World-Honored One again told the bhikṣus: "Do you see this bhikṣu bowing his head in reverence and then sitting to one side?"

The bhikṣus said to the Buddha: "Yes, we have seen it."

The Buddha told the bhikṣus: "Do not have any light thoughts about this bhikṣu. You should not measure others. Only the Tathāgata can know people." At that time, the World-Honored One spoke a verse, saying:

Birds and beasts all fear the lion, Only the
lion, the king of beasts, is without equal. Thus
a wise person, though small, is great. Do not
take his physical appearance to give rise to contempt
What use is a huge body with much flesh
and no wisdom? This wise one is superior in
wisdom and is the best man. Free from desire
cutting off all bonds, nirvana forever unborn, Holding this
last body, subduing the armies of Māra.

Having spoken this sūtra, the bhikṣus were delighted and practiced accordingly.
