SA 1095（一〇九五） 乞食

Thus have I heard:

At one time the Buddha was staying in the village of the Sāla brahmins.

At that time, the World-Honored One, in the morning, put on his robe, took his alms bowl, and entered the village of the brahmins to beg for alms. At that time, Mara, the Evil One, thought: "Now the Shakyamuni Gautama, in the morning, has put on his robe, taken his alms bowl, and entered the village of the brahmins to beg for alms. I should go there first and tell the faithful brahmin householders to make the Shakyamuni Gautama return empty-handed.

At that time, Mara, the Evil One, followed behind the Buddha and shouted: "Shakyamuni! Shakyamuni! Did you not get any food at all?"

At that time, the World-Honored One thought: "The evil Mara, the Evil One, wants to cause trouble." He then spoke a verse:

You have newly incurred immeasurable sins towards the Tathāgata. Do you
think that by calling out to the Tathāgata, you will suffer pain?

At that time, Mara, the Evil One, said: "Gautama! If you enter the village again, I will make sure you get food."

At that time, the World-Honored One spoke a verse, saying:

Even if there is nothing, one can live in peace and happiness, like
the gods of the Heaven of Light Sound, who always eat with joy
and delight. Even if there is nothing, one can live in peace and
happiness, always eating with joy and delight, not relying on a physical body.

At that time, Mara Pāpīyas thought, "The Śramaṇa Gautama already knows my mind." He was inwardly distressed and disappeared.
