Thus have I heard: | 如是我闻: |
At one time the Buddha was staying in the village of the Sāla brahmins. | 一时,佛住娑罗婆罗门聚落。 |
At that time, the World-Honored One, in the morning, put on his robe, took his alms bowl, and entered the village of the brahmins to beg for alms. At that time, Mara, the Evil One, thought: "Now the Shakyamuni Gautama, in the morning, has put on his robe, taken his alms bowl, and entered the village of the brahmins to beg for alms. I should go there first and tell the faithful brahmin householders to make the Shakyamuni Gautama return empty-handed. | 尔时,世尊晨朝著衣持钵,入婆罗聚落乞食。时,魔波旬作是念:「今沙门瞿昙晨朝著衣持钵,入婆罗聚落乞食,我今当往,先入其舍,语诸信心婆罗门长者,令沙门瞿昙空钵而出。」 |
At that time, Mara, the Evil One, followed behind the Buddha and shouted: "Shakyamuni! Shakyamuni! Did you not get any food at all?" | 时,魔波旬随逐佛后,作是唱言:「沙门!沙门!都不得食耶?」 |
At that time, the World-Honored One thought: "The evil Mara, the Evil One, wants to cause trouble." He then spoke a verse: | 尔时,世尊作是念:「恶魔波旬欲作娆乱。」即说偈言: |

At that time, Mara Pāpīyas thought, "The Śramaṇa Gautama already knows my mind." He was inwardly distressed and disappeared. | 时,魔波旬作是念:「沙门瞿昙已知我心。」内怀忧戚,即没不现。 |
