Thus have I heard: | 如是我闻: |
At one time the Buddha was staying at the Jētavana Monastery in Sàvatthi. | 一时,佛住瞻婆国揭伽池侧。 |
At that time, on the fifteenth day of the lunar month, the World-Honored One was sitting in front of the assembly for the confession ceremony. When the moon rose, Venerable Vāgīśa had this thought in the midst of the assembly: "I now wish to praise the moon with a verse in front of the Buddha." Having had this thought, he immediately rose from his seat, adjusted his robes, bowed to the Buddha, joined his palms, and said to the Buddha: "World-Honored One! I wish to speak. Well-Gone One! I wish to speak." | 尔时,世尊月十五日布萨时,于大众前坐。月初出时。时,有尊者婆耆舍于大众中,作是念:「我今欲于佛前叹月譬偈。」作是念已,即从坐起,整衣服,为佛作礼,合掌白佛言:「世尊!欲有所说。善逝!欲有所说。」 |
The Buddha told Vāgīśa, "If you wish to speak, then speak." | 佛告婆耆舍:「欲说者便说!」 |
At that time, Venerable Vāgīśa spoke a verse in front of the Buddha, saying: | 时,尊者婆耆舍即于佛前而说偈言: |

When Venerable Vāgīśa spoke this verse, the bhikṣus who heard it were all greatly delighted. | 尊者婆耆舍说是偈时,诸比丘闻其所说,皆大欢喜。 |
