SA 1208（一二〇八） 揭伽他

Thus have I heard:

At one time the Buddha was staying at the Jētavana Monastery in Sàvatthi.

At that time, on the fifteenth day of the lunar month, the World-Honored One was sitting in front of the assembly for the confession ceremony. When the moon rose, Venerable Vāgīśa had this thought in the midst of the assembly: "I now wish to praise the moon with a verse in front of the Buddha." Having had this thought, he immediately rose from his seat, adjusted his robes, bowed to the Buddha, joined his palms, and said to the Buddha: "World-Honored One! I wish to speak. Well-Gone One! I wish to speak."

The Buddha told Vāgīśa, "If you wish to speak, then speak."

At that time, Venerable Vāgīśa spoke a verse in front of the Buddha, saying:

Like the moon suspended in the sky, bright and pure, without clouds
or obscurations, its radiant light shining, illuminating the ten directions. The Tathāgata
is also like this, the light of wisdom illuminating the world, with
the good reputation of his merits and virtues pervading and filling the ten directions.

When Venerable Vāgīśa spoke this verse, the bhikṣus who heard it were all greatly delighted.
