Saṃyuktāgama

Thus have I heard:

At one time the Buddha was staying at Vulture Peak in Rājagṛha.

At that time, Venerable Rāhula went to where the Buddha was, bowed his head at the Buddha's feet, stepped back to one side, and said to the Buddha, "World-Honored One! How should I know and see my internal consciousness body and all external characteristics, so that the fetters of 'I,' 'mine,' and 'I-grasping' do not arise?"

At that time, the World-Honored One said to Rāhula, "Excellent! Rāhula, you are able to ask the Tathāgata about the profound meaning."

The Buddha told Rāhula, "Whether the eyes are past, future, or present, whether they are internal or external, coarse or subtle, good or bad, far or near, they are all neither self, nor different from self, nor do they exist together. One should know this as it is. The same applies to the ears, nose, tongue, body, and mind.

Rāhula! Knowing and seeing in this way, one should eliminate the attachment to 'I', 'mine', and the conceit of 'I' in regard to this body and all external characteristics. Rāhula! When attachment to 'I', 'mine', and the conceit of 'I' are eliminated, Rāhula! This is called cutting off the defilement of attachment and wrong views, and attaining the ultimate end of suffering.

Having spoken this sūtra, the Buddha finished. Venerable Rāhula, having heard the Buddha's words, rejoiced and upheld them.
