Saṃyuktāgama

Thus have I heard:

Once, the Buddha was traveling in the human realm of Magadha, staying in a bamboo grove between Rajagriha and Vaishali, where the king had built a meritorious dwelling. At that time, the World-Honored One was staying there with a great assembly.

At that time, the World-Honored One told the bhikṣus, "If I and you had no knowledge, no seeing, no following, and no acceptance of the four noble truths, we would have been driven through birth and death for a long time. What are the four? They are the noble truth of suffering, the noble truth of the origin of suffering, the noble truth of the cessation of suffering, and the noble truth of the path leading to the cessation of suffering. If I and you had no knowledge, no seeing, no following, and no acceptance of the four noble truths, we would have been driven through birth and death for a long time. Because I and you have followed and understood the noble truth of suffering, cut off all afflictions, exhausted all birth and death, and will not experience future existence. We have followed and understood the noble truth of the origin of suffering, the noble truth of the cessation of suffering, and the noble truth of the path leading to the cessation of suffering, cut off all afflictions, exhausted all birth and death, and will not experience future existence. Therefore, bhikṣus! If you have not yet attained uninterrupted equality regarding the four noble truths, you should diligently cultivate and arouse supreme desire for uninterrupted equality."

At that time, the World-Honored One spoke a verse, saying:

I have always been with you, wandering through birth and death for a long time
Because we have not seen the noble truths, great suffering has increased day by day
If we see the four noble truths, we will cut off the great ocean of
afflictions, and birth and death will be forever eliminated, and we will not experience future existence again.

After the Buddha spoke this sūtra, the bhikṣus heard what the Buddha said and joyfully practiced it.
