Thus have I heard: | 如是我闻： |
At one time the Buddha was staying at the Kalandaka Bamboo Grove in Rājagṛha. | 一时，佛住王舍城迦兰陀竹园。 |
At that time the World-Honored One told the bhikṣus, "Sentient beings are always together with the realms, united with the realms. How are they together with the realms? It means that when sentient beings have an unwholesome mind, they are together with the unwholesome realm. When they have a wholesome mind, they are together with the wholesome realm. When they have an inferior mind, they are together with the inferior realm. When they have a superior mind, they are together with the superior realm. | 尔时，世尊告诸比丘：「众生常与界俱，与界和合。云何与界俱？谓众生不善心时与不善界俱，善心时与善界俱，鄙心时与鄙界俱，胜心时与胜界俱。 |
At that time, Venerable Kauṇḍinya was walking in a nearby place with many bhikṣus. All of them were senior bhikṣus, learned and virtuous, who had left home for a long time and practiced the holy life. | 「时，尊者憍陈如与众多比丘于近处经行，一切皆是上座多闻大德，出家已久，具修梵行。 |
There was also Venerable Mahākāśyapa walking in a nearby place with many bhikṣus. All of them were content with few desires, practiced asceticism, and did not keep any extra belongings. | 「复有尊者大迦叶与众多比丘于近处经行，一切皆是少欲知足，头陀苦行，不畜遗余。 |
Venerable Śāriputra was walking in a nearby place with many bhikṣus. All of them were of great wisdom and eloquence. | 「尊者舍利弗与众多比丘于近处经行，一切皆是大智辩才。 |
At that time, Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana was walking in a nearby place with many bhikṣus. All of them had great supernatural powers and strength. | 「时，尊者大目揵连与众多比丘于近处经行，一切皆是神通大力。 |
At that time, Aniruddha was walking in a nearby place with many bhikṣus. All of them had the clear vision of the divine eye. | 「时，阿那律陀与众多比丘于近处经行，一切皆是天眼明彻。 |
At that time, Venerable Bhadrika was walking in a nearby place with many bhikṣus. All of them were diligent in their practice, striving with vigor. | 「时，尊者二十亿耳与众多比丘于近处经行，一切皆是勇猛精进，专勤修行者。 |
At that time, Venerable Revata was walking in a nearby place with many bhikṣus. All of them were able to provide for the needs of the great assembly. | 「时，尊者陀骠与众多比丘于近处经行，一切皆是能为大众修供具者。 |
At that time, Venerable Upali was walking in a nearby place with many bhikṣus. All of them were well-versed in the Vinaya. | 「时，尊者优波离与众多比丘于近处经行，一切皆是通达律行。 |
At that time, Venerable Purna was walking in a nearby place with many bhikṣus. All of them were eloquent in expounding the Dharma. | 「时，尊者富楼那与众多比丘于近处经行，皆是辩才善说法者。 |
At that time, Venerable Katyayana was walking in a nearby place with many bhikṣus. All of them were able to analyze the various sutras and skillfully expound the characteristics of the Dharma. | 「时，尊者迦旃延与众多比丘于近处经行，一切皆能分别诸经，善说法相。时，尊者阿难与众多比丘于近处经行，一切皆是多闻总持。 |
At that time, Venerable Rahula was walking in a nearby place with many bhikṣus. All of them were skilled in upholding the precepts. | 「时，尊者罗睺罗与众多比丘于近处经行，一切皆是善持律行。 |
At that time, Devadatta was walking in a nearby place with many bhikṣus. All of them were engaged in various evil practices. | 「时，提婆达多与众多比丘于近处经行，一切皆是习众恶行，是名比丘常与界俱，与界和合，是故，诸比丘！当善分别种种诸界。」 |
When the Buddha spoke this sūtra, the bhikṣus who heard what the Buddha said rejoiced and upheld it. | 佛说是经时。诸比丘闻佛所说，欢喜奉行。 |
