Saṃyuktāgama

Thus have I heard:

At one time the Buddha was staying at Anāthapiṇḍada’s Park in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī.

At that time the World-Honored One told the bhikṣus, "There are five aggregates of grasping. What are the five? The form aggregate of grasping, the feeling aggregate, the perception aggregate, the volitional formations aggregate, and the consciousness aggregate. If any śramaṇas or brāhmaṇas see a self, they all see it in these five aggregates of grasping. The śramaṇas and brāhmaṇas see form as the self, the self as different from form, the self as in form, or form as in the self; they see feeling, perception, volitional formations, and consciousness as the self, the self as different from consciousness, the self as in consciousness, or consciousness as in the self. Because of ignorance, foolish and ignorant ordinary people see form as the self, different from the self, or as having the characteristics of the self, and say, 'This is true, I will not abandon it.' Because they do not abandon it, their faculties grow; when their faculties grow, they increase their contacts; because they are touched by the six sense bases, foolish and ignorant ordinary people give rise to the perception of suffering and happiness. What are the six? They are the sense base of eye contact, the sense base of ear contact, the sense base of nose contact, the sense base of tongue contact, the sense base of body contact, and the sense base of mind contact.

"Thus, bhikṣus, there are the realms of intention, phenomena, and ignorance. Because of ignorant contact, foolish and ignorant ordinary people give rise to the perceptions of existence, non-existence, both existence and non-existence, superiority, equality, inferiority, knowledge, and views. These perceptions and views arise from the six sense bases. The well-versed noble disciples abandon ignorance and give rise to wisdom regarding these six sense bases. They do not give rise to the perceptions of existence, non-existence, both existence and non-existence, superiority, equality, inferiority, knowledge, and views. Having known and seen thus, the ignorant contact that arose previously ceases, and the contact of wisdom arises."

Having spoken this sūtra, the Buddha finished what he had to say. The bhikṣus, having heard what the Buddha said, rejoiced and received it respectfully.
