Saṃyuktāgama

Thus have I heard:

At one time the Buddha was staying at Anāthapiṇḍada’s Park in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī.

At that time, the World-Honored One addressed the bhikṣus, saying: "There are five aggregates of clinging, namely, the form aggregate of clinging, the feeling aggregate of clinging, the perception aggregate of clinging, the volitional formations aggregate of clinging, and the consciousness aggregate of clinging. Bhikṣus, if śramaṇas and brāhmaṇas conceive of a self, they all conceive of a self in relation to these five aggregates of clinging. What are the five? Śramaṇas and brāhmaṇas view form as the self, different from the self, or as existing in the self; likewise, they view feeling, perception, volitional formations, and consciousness as the self, different from the self, or as existing in the self. In this way, ignorant and unlearned ordinary people conceive of a self, ignorance, and discrimination in this way, and do not transcend the notion of 'mine'. Those who do not transcend the notion of 'mine' enter into the sense faculties; having entered into the sense faculties, they give rise to contact; they are touched by the contact of the six sense bases. Ignorant and unlearned ordinary people give rise to suffering and pleasure from this, and from this arise these and others. Namely, the six sense bases of contact. What are the six? They are the sense base of eye contact, the sense base of ear contact, the sense base of nose contact, the sense base of tongue contact, the sense base of body contact, and the sense base of mind contact. Bhikṣus, there are the realm of mind, the realm of dharmas, and the realm of ignorance. They are touched by the contact of ignorance. Ignorant and unlearned ordinary people say 'is', 'is not', 'both is and is not', 'neither is nor is not', 'I am supreme', 'I am similar', 'I know', and 'I see'.

"Furthermore, bhikṣus, the learned noble disciple abides in the six sense bases, and is able to be disenchanted with ignorance and give rise to wisdom. He is able to be free from desire for ignorance and give rise to wisdom. He does not have, does not not have, is not both, is not neither, is not superior to me, is not inferior to me, is not similar to me. I know, I see. Having such knowledge and such views, the previous ignorance contact ceases, and the subsequent wisdom contact arises."

Having spoken this sūtra, the Buddha finished. The bhikṣus, having heard the Buddha's words, rejoiced and practiced accordingly.
