Thus have I heard:

Thus have I heard:

At that time, many bhikṣus went to Venerable Aniruddha, inquired about his well-being, and stood to one side. They said to Venerable Aniruddha, "Venerable Aniruddha! Is your illness bearable? Is it getting better and not worse?"

Venerable Aniruddha said, "My illness is unbearable. The bodily pains are increasing and not decreasing." He then spoke three parables, as explained in the Cāmadevī-sūtra.

"However, since my body has already experienced this pain, I shall endure it with right mindfulness and right awareness."

The monks asked Venerable Aniruddha, "Where does the mind dwell that can endure such great suffering with right mindfulness and right awareness?"

Venerable Aniruddha said to the monks, "Dwelling in the four foundations of mindfulness, I can endure the physical pain with right mindfulness and right awareness. What are the four foundations of mindfulness? They are mindfulness of the body in relation to the internal body, and mindfulness of feelings, mind, and dharmas. These are called dwelling in the four foundations of mindfulness, being able to endure physical pain with right mindfulness and right awareness."

At that time, after the virtuous ones had discussed together, they rejoiced and followed their joy, each rising from their seats and departing.
