SA 726（七二六） 善知识
Thus have I heard: | 如是我闻： |
At one time the Buddha was staying at the Cliffside Monastery in Rājagṛha. At that time Venerable Ānanda was also staying there. | 一时，佛住王舍城夹谷精舍。尔时，尊者阿难亦在彼住。 |
At that time Venerable Ānanda was alone in a quiet place, meditating and reflecting, thinking thus: "The half of the holy life is this: good friends, good companions, good followers, not bad friends, bad companions, bad followers." | 时，尊者阿难独一静处禅思思惟，作如是念：「半梵行者，所谓善知识、善伴党、善随从，非恶知识、恶伴党、恶随从。」 |
At that time Venerable Ānanda arose from meditation and went to where the Buddha was. He bowed his head at the Buddha's feet, sat to one side, and said to the Buddha: "World-Honored One! I was alone in a quiet place, meditating and reflecting, thinking thus: 'The half of the holy life is this: good friends, good companions, good followers, not bad friends, bad companions, bad followers.'" | 时，尊者阿难从禅觉，往诣佛所，稽首礼足，退坐一面，白佛言：「世尊！我独一静处禅思思惟，作是念：『半梵行者，所谓善知识、善伴党、善随从，非恶知识、恶伴党、恶随从。』」 |
The Buddha told Ānanda: "Do not say that the half of the holy life is good friends, good companions, good followers, not bad friends, bad companions, bad followers. Why is that? The pure and complete tranquility, the pure practice of the holy life, is indeed good friends, good companions, good followers, not bad friends, bad companions, bad followers. Because of being a good friend, there are sentient beings who, in relation to me, take up the factor of mindfulness, based on seclusion, based on dispassion, based on cessation, inclined towards letting go. Similarly, the factors of investigation of phenomena, energy, joy, tranquility, concentration, and equanimity, based on seclusion, based on dispassion, based on cessation, inclined towards letting go. Therefore, Ānanda, know that the pure and complete tranquility, the pure practice of the holy life, is indeed good friends, good companions, good followers, not bad friends, bad companions, bad followers." | 佛告阿难：「莫作是言：『半梵行者，谓善知识、善伴党、善随从，非恶知识、恶伴党、恶随从。』所以者何？纯一满静，梵行清白，所谓善知识、善伴党、善随从，非恶知识、恶伴党、恶随从。我为善知识故，有众生于我所取念觉分，依远离、依无欲、依灭、向于舍。如是择法觉分，精进、喜、猗、定、舍觉分，依远离、依无欲、依灭、向于舍。以是故当知，阿难！纯一满静，梵行清白，谓善知识、善伴党、善随从，非恶知识、非恶伴党、非恶随从。」 |
Having spoken this sūtra, the Buddha said to the bhikṣus: "The bhikṣus should all practice in this way." | 佛说此经已，诸比丘闻佛所说，欢喜奉行。 |
