Saṃyuktāgama

Thus have I heard:

At one time the Buddha was staying at Anāthapiṇḍada’s Park in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī.

At that time, the World-Honored One addressed the bhikṣus, saying, "There is what is wrong and what is right. Listen carefully and consider it well, I will explain it to you. What is wrong? It refers to wrong views, up to wrong concentration. What is right? It refers to right views, up to right concentration. What is right view? It refers to speaking of giving, speaking of precepts, speaking of observances, speaking of good conduct, speaking of bad conduct, speaking of the results of good and bad conduct, speaking of this world, speaking of the other world, speaking of parents, speaking of sentient beings being born, speaking of the arhat who has attained well and gone well, speaking of this world and the other world, and personally knowing and fully abiding in the realization that 'my birth is ended, the holy life has been established, what was to be done has been done, and I will not experience another existence after this one.' What is right intention? It refers to the intention of renunciation, the intention of non-anger, and the intention of non-harming. What is right speech? It refers to refraining from false speech, refraining from divisive speech, refraining from harsh speech, and refraining from frivolous speech. What is right action? It refers to refraining from killing, stealing, and sexual misconduct. What is right livelihood? It refers to seeking clothing, food and drink, bedding and seats, and medicine for the sick in accordance with the Dharma, not in a manner contrary to the Dharma. What is right effort? It refers to desire, diligence, skillful means, renunciation, striving, and being able to always practice without retreating. What is right mindfulness? It refers to mindfulness that accords with, and is not false or empty. What is right concentration? It refers to abiding in the mind without distraction, being firm, focused, tranquil, in samādhi, and single-minded."

Having spoken this sūtra, the Buddha addressed the bhikṣus, saying, "The bhikṣus who have heard this should remember it well."
