Saṃyuktāgama

Thus have I heard:

At one time the Buddha was staying at Anāthapiṇḍada’s Park in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī.

At that time the World-Honored One told the bhikṣus: "Form is impermanent. What is impermanent is suffering. What is suffering is not self. What is not self is also not mine. To view it in this way is called true and correct contemplation. So it is with feeling, perception, volition, and consciousness. They are impermanent. What is impermanent is suffering. What is suffering is not self. What is not self is also not mine. To view it in this way is called true contemplation.

"Noble disciples! To view it in this way is to be disgusted with form, feeling, perception, volition, and consciousness. Being disgusted, one does not delight. Not delighting, one attains liberation. For one who is liberated, true knowledge arises: 'My birth is ended, the holy life has been established, what was to be done has been done, I know that I will not be subject to any future lives.'"

At that time, the bhikṣus, having heard the Buddha's teaching, joyfully received and practiced it.
