Faji yaosong jing / Udānavarga (T 213)

Not blaming, yet giving rise to blame, not slandering, yet creating karma
the ignorant and deluded undergo rebirth, in this world and in future lives.

First creating one's own karmic leaks, then harming others, each
harming the other, like a bird caught in a net.

Destroying others, one destroys oneself; enemies meet enemies. Defaming
others, one defames oneself; hating others, one hates oneself.

What kind of practice is this? Not knowing the true Dharma
one's life is short, abandoning hatred only to form more hatred.

All the characteristics together slander, each giving rise to
angry voices. Joyfully and equally enduring, this patience is unsurpassed.

Cutting bones and dying, cattle and horses dying, losing
wealth, the country then becomes chaotic, gathering again and regaining.

You all do not give rise to evil, this Dharma attains freedom
from enmity. Being able to endure others' enmity, this is called wisdom.

If one knows this teaching is supreme, the deluded seek happiness. In the
present, there is no enmity, and in the future, there will be no resentment.

One should not repay enmity with enmity, only then will one attain happiness
Practicing patience, enmity naturally ceases, this is called the Dharma of the Tathāgata.

If someone insults me, they are superior, I am inferior. If
one is happy according to one's wishes, enmity will eventually cease.

If one befriends good friends and roams together in the world, one does
not accumulate any remaining enmity, but single-mindedly thinks in accordance with their intentions.

If one does not find good friends and roams alone without companions
one should observe all countries and practice goodness alone without doing evil.

If one has no companions in learning and also no close friends
it is better to alone uphold good conduct, not to be with fools.

If one delights in learning precepts and practicing the Dharma, what use are companions?
Like a dragon who likes deep pools, like an elephant who enjoys the wilderness.
