Faji yaosong jing / Udānavarga (T 213)

Who can choose the ground? To abandon hell and take heaven
only speak the good Dharma, like picking the best and wonderful flowers.

The learner can choose the ground, abandoning hell and taking heaven
speaking the wonderful Dharma well, able to pick the various wonderful flowers.

Cut the forest, not the tree, because fear arises from the forest
Having cut the forest and extinguished it, the bhikṣu attains perfect peace.

Cutting the forest without uprooting it, because fear arises from the forest
not cutting even a tiny bit, causing the mind to be bound.

Cutting the forest without uprooting it, because fear arises from the forest, the
mind's attachment is hardest to leave, like a calf's love for its mother.

One should cut off one's own attachment, like a dried-up lotus pond, cease
one's traces and receive the right teachings, the Buddha says the bliss of nirvāṇa.

Like a desirable flower, beautiful in color but without fragrance
skillful words are like this, without fruit and no reward.

Like a desirable flower, beautiful in color and fragrant, skillful
words are like this, they will definitely receive good rewards.

Like a bee collecting flowers, not destroying the color and fragrance, but taking
the taste and flying away, a bhikṣu enters the village in the same way.

Not going against others' likes and dislikes, not observing what is done or
not done, but only observing one's own bodily actions, whether correct or incorrect.

Like a ditch filled with filth near a great road
a lotus flower grows in it, fragrant and very pleasing.

There is birth, there is death. Ordinary people enjoy being on the
edge. The wise love to leave. They are true followers of the Buddha.

Gathering many wonderful flowers, they make garlands and adornments. Sentient beings
accumulate wholesome roots, and in future lives they become even more excellent.

Like the beautiful flowers of the mālati and the pure flowers of the
makuṭa, if greed and anger are eliminated, the bhikṣu is pure and fragrant.

Like a person who gathers beautiful flowers, concentrating without distraction, due to sleep
they encounter a flood and are suddenly brought down by the Lord of Death.

Like a person who gathers beautiful flowers, concentrating without distraction
the mind of desire is insatiable and always afflicted by poverty.

Like a person who gathers beautiful flowers, concentrating without distraction, not
yet obtaining true wealth and treasures, one is long afflicted by poverty.

If one does not see the king of death, with wisdom illuminating like a
pure flower, the bhikṣu reaches the other shore, like a snake shedding its old skin.

If greed, anger, and delusion are cut off, like discarding the roots of poisonous
flowers, the bhikṣu reaches the other shore, like a snake shedding its old skin.

If the root of greed is eradicated, like a flower floating on water
the bhikṣu reaches the other shore, like a snake shedding its old skin.

If the root of anger is eradicated, like a flower floating on water
the bhikṣu reaches the other shore, like a snake shedding its old skin.

If the root of delusion is eradicated, like a flower floating on water
the bhikṣu reaches the other shore, like a snake shedding its old skin.

Just as a person making a flower garland, the mind is greedy and
insatiable, not exhausting the poison of this world, the three roots constantly bind.

Contemplating the body as a fragile vessel, illusory phenomena as a mirage, cutting off
the blooming flowers of Māra, not seeing the path of the Lord of Death.

This body is like a mass of foam, knowing this illusory and magical Dharma, cutting
off the blooming flowers of Māra, not seeing the path of the Lord of Death.

The root of arrogance is eradicated, like a flower floating on water
the bhikṣu reaches the other shore, like a snake shedding its old skin.

If the root of stinginess is eradicated, like a flower floating on water
the bhikṣu reaches the other shore, like a snake shedding its old skin.

If the root of the branch of craving is eradicated, like a flower floating
on water, the bhikṣu reaches the other shore, like a snake shedding its old skin.

If there are no roots of afflictions, and one attains the good causes and effects
of retribution, the bhikṣu reaches the other shore, like a snake shedding its old skin.
