Faji yaosong jing / Udānavarga (T 213)

Look well at your own faults, and do not let them show
outside. Each one has his own faults, like the light dust that flies.

If you claim to be faultless, then merit and demerit will both come to
you. Only seeing the faults of others, you always harbor the thought of ignorance.

Knowing shame is the best among the long-lived. How can they
be bound by greed? The strong and fearless have short lives.

Knowing shame does not exhaust one's life. Always seeking pure
conduct, with unimpaired deportment, one should contemplate true holy life.

The world is universally blind and dark, with few eyes of
wisdom. Many birds fall into nets, but few are born in heaven.

Observing the world's decaying phenomena, one only sees the transformation
of various forms. The foolish bind themselves, entangled in darkness
They also do not see the practices, observing them as nonexistent.

Sentient beings all have a self, giving rise to suffering for them
Each does not see the other, not seeing the thorn of wrong views.

Observing the causes and conditions of this thorn, sentient beings are greatly attached
I create, but they do not exist. They create, but I do not have.

Sentient beings are bound by arrogance, attached to arrogance and delusion
They are not free from the brink of birth and death.

Those who have attained and those who will attain are both subject to the defilement
of objects. They practice the root of illness and realize all that is to be learned.

Observing those who uphold precepts, those with pure conduct, and those who
attend to the sick and weak - this is called reaching the brink.

Observe the bubbles on water, also observe the mirage. Do not observe
the body in this way, and you will not see death coming.

Observe the bubbles on water, also observe the mirage. Do not observe the
world in this way, and you will not see the King of Death.

Observe the body in this way, like a king's colorful chariot. The foolish
are attached to it, but the wise seek to be far away from it.

Observe the body in this way, like a king's colorful chariot. The
foolish are attached to it, but the wise are far away from it.

Observe the body in this way, as the cause of various illnesses
Illness and foolishness come together - how can it be relied upon?

Observe the painted image, the lapis lazuli blue hair. The foolish take
it as a condition, not seeking to cross to the other shore.

Observe the painted image, the lapis lazuli blue hair. The foolish
take it as a condition, the wise are disgusted with it.

Forcefully adorning the ugly and defiled body with painted forms, the foolish
take it as a condition, yet do not seek to liberate themselves.

The eight parts of nails and hair, the two parts of eyes and
ears, the foolish are attached to them, yet do not seek to liberate themselves.

Attached to desire, defiled by desire, not investigating the conditions of afflictions, not
giving rise to afflictions, one should cross over the flow of desire and existence.

Not escaping from the garden, escaping from the garden and returning to the
garden, one should further observe this person, escaping from bondage and returning to bondage.

Now abandoning the position of heavenly king, not creating the basis of birth and death, seeking
to be free from the suffering of hell, I wish to hear about the bliss of nirvāṇa.

The blue-robed one with a white parasol covering his body, the charioteer driving a single wheel
observing that he has not yet escaped from defilements, seeking to sever the bonds and attachments.

Many people seek refuge in themselves, the spirits of mountains, rivers, and
trees, gardens, and shrines, hoping to be spared from suffering and difficulties.

This is not the supreme refuge, nor is it auspicious. If there are
those who take refuge in this way, they will not escape from all suffering.

If there are those who take refuge in the Buddha, the Dharma, and
the Sangha of monks, and cultivate the noble four truths as seen by wisdom,

Suffering arises from the causes and conditions of suffering. One should transcend the root
of this suffering. The noble eightfold path leads to the extinction of the sweet dew.

This is the highest refuge, not without benefit. If there are
those who take refuge, they will be liberated from all suffering.

Those who have seen, will see, and should see, as well as those who have not seen and should
see, those who have seen and will see again, and those who have seen and will not see again.

Those who have seen and will see again, who discern the original nature
of those, considering day as night, the precious body will soon be destroyed.

Those who have seen and will not see again, who though seeing do
not see, like seeing but not seeing, who see and also do not see.

How is it that one sees and does not see? How is it said that one sees and
does not see? Because of what does one see and not see? Because of what does one see.

Just as one does not contemplate suffering, one should always deeply contemplate
oneself, to understand the root of suffering, this is called the subtle contemplation.

Who causes ordinary people not to contemplate the origin of the
aggregates? By observing them, one removes darkness and sees great illumination.
