SN22: Connected Discourses on the Aggregates

SN22:10 Suffering in the Three Times

1At Sāvatthī. "Bhikkhus, form is suffering, both of the past and the future, not to speak of the present. sn.iii.20

Seeing thus, bhikkhus, the instructed noble disciple is indifferent towards form of the past; he does not seek delight in form of the future; and he is practising for revulsion towards form of the present, for its fading away and cessation.

Feeling is suffering, both of the past and the future, not to speak of the present.

Seeing thus the instructed noble disciple is indifferent towards feeling of the past; does not seek delight in feeling of the future; and is practising for revulsion towards feeling of the present, for its fading away and cessation.

Perception is suffering, both of the past and the future, not to speak of the present.

Seeing thus the instructed noble disciple is indifferent towards perception of the past; does not seek delight in perception of the future; and is practising for revulsion towards perception of the present, for its fading away and cessation.

Volitional formations are suffering, both of the past and the future, not to speak of the present.

Seeing thus the instructed noble disciple is indifferent towards volitional formations of the past; does not seek delight in volitional formations of the future; and is practising for revulsion towards volitional formations of the present, for its fading away and cessation.

Consciousness is suffering, both of the past and the future, not to speak of the present.

Seeing thus, bhikkhus, the instructed noble disciple is indifferent towards consciousness of the past; he does not seek delight in consciousness of the future; and he is practising for revulsion towards consciousness of the present, for its fading away and cessation."
