“Pañcahi, bhikkhave, aṅgehi samannāgato rañño cakkavattissa jeṭṭho putto pitarā pavattitaṁ cakkaṁ dhammeneva anuppavatteti; “Mendicants, possessing five factors a wheel-turning monarch’s eldest son continues to wield the power set in motion by his father only in a principled manner. Idha, bhikkhave, rañño cakkavattissa jeṭṭho putto atthaññū ca hoti, dhammaññū ca, mattaññū ca, kālaññū ca, parisaññū ca. A wheel-turning monarch’s oldest son knows what is right, knows principle, knows moderation, knows the right time, and knows the assembly. Imehi kho, bhikkhave, pañcahi aṅgehi samannāgato rañño cakkavattissa jeṭṭho putto pitarā pavattitaṁ cakkaṁ dhammeneva anuppavatteti; A wheel-turning monarch’s oldest son who possesses these five factors continues to wield the power set in motion by his father only in a principled manner.

In this way they wrap the corpse with five hundred double-layers. Then they place it in an iron case filled with oil and close it up with another case. Then, having built a funeral pyre out of all kinds of fragrant substances, they cremate the corpse. Cātumahāpathe rañño cakkavattissa thūpaṁ karonti. King Daḷhanemi Bhūtapubbaṁ, bhikkhave, rājā daḷhanemi nāma ahosi cakkavattī dhammiko dhammarājā cāturanto vijitāvī janapadatthāvariyappatto sattaratanasamannāgato. Once upon a time, mendicants, there was a king named Daḷhanemi who was a wheel-turning monarch, a just and principled king. His dominion extended to all four sides, he achieved stability in the country, and he possessed the seven treasures. cakkavattī → cakkavatti (sya-all, pts1ed) yassa rañño cakkavattissa dibbaṁ cakkaratanaṁ osakkati ṭhānā cavati, na dāni tena raññā ciraṁ jīvitabbaṁ hotīti. when this happens to a wheel-turning monarch, he does not have long to live. Iṅgha tvaṁ, tāta, ariye cakkavattivatte vattāhi. Come now, my dear, proceed in the noble duty of a wheel-turning monarch. Ṭhānaṁ kho panetaṁ vijjati, yaṁ te ariye cakkavattivatte vattamānassa tadahuposathe pannarase sīsaṁnhātassa uposathikassa uparipāsādavaragatassa dibbaṁ cakkaratanaṁ pātubhavissati sahassāraṁ sanemikaṁ sanābhikaṁ sabbākāraparipūran’ti. This is the noble duty of a wheel-turning monarch.’ ‘Evaṁ, devā’ti kho, bhikkhave, rājā khattiyo muddhābhisitto rājisissa paṭissutvā ariye cakkavattivatte vatti. ‘Yes, Your Majesty,’ replied the new king to the royal sage. And he proceeded in the noble duty of a wheel-turning monarch. Tassa ariye cakkavattivatte vattamānassa tadahuposathe pannarase sīsaṁnhātassa uposathikassa uparipāsādavaragatassa While he was proceeding in that duty, on a fifteenth day sabbath, he had bathed his head and gone upstairs in the royal longhouse to observe the sabbath. Ye kho pana, bhikkhave, puratthimāya disāya paṭirājāno, te rājānaṁ cakkavattiṁ upasaṅkamitvā evamāhaṁsu: And any opposing rulers of the eastern quarter came to the wheel-turning monarch and said, Ye kho pana, bhikkhave, puratthimāya disāya paṭirājāno, te rañño cakkavattissa anuyantā ahesuṁ. And so the rulers of the northern quarter became his vassals. Atha kho taṁ, bhikkhave, cakkaratanaṁ samuddapariyantaṁ pathaviṁ abhivijinitvā tameva rājadhāniṁ paccāgantvā rañño cakkavattissa antepuradvāre atthakaraṇapamukhe akkhāhataṁ maññe aṭṭhāsi rañño cakkavattissa antepuraṁ upasobhayamānaṁ. And then the wheel-treasure, having triumphed over this land surrounded by ocean, returned to the royal capital. There it stood still by the gate to the royal compound at the High Court as if fixed to an axle, illuminating the royal compound. 3. Dutiyādicakkavattikathā 3. On Subsequent Wheel-Turning Monarchs ‘Evaṁ, devā’ti kho, bhikkhave, so puriso rañño cakkavattissa paccassosi. dn26 Disvāna yena rājā cakkavattī tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā rājānaṁ cakkavattiṁ etadavoca: dn26 yassa rañño cakkavattissa dibbaṁ cakkaratanaṁ osakkati, ṭhānā cavati, na dāni tena raññā ciraṁ jīvitabbaṁ hotīti. dn26 no ca kho rājisiṁ upasaṅkamitvā ariyaṁ cakkavattivattaṁ pucchi. But he didn’t go to the royal sage and ask about the noble duty of a wheel-turning monarch. Tassa samatena janapadaṁ pasāsato pubbenāparaṁ janapadā na pabbanti, yathā taṁ pubbakānaṁ rājūnaṁ ariye cakkavattivatte vattamānānaṁ. So governed, the country’s people did not prosper like before, as they had when former kings proceeded in the noble duty of a wheel-turning monarch. ‘na kho te, deva, samatena sudaṁ janapadaṁ pasāsato pubbenāparaṁ janapadā pabbanti, yathā taṁ pubbakānaṁ rājūnaṁ ariye cakkavattivatte vattamānānaṁ. ‘Sire, when governed according to your own ideas, the country’s people do not prosper like before, as they did when former kings proceeded in the noble duty of a wheel-turning monarch. Saṁvijjanti kho te, deva, vijite amaccā pārisajjā gaṇakamahāmattā anīkaṭṭhā dovārikā mantassājīvino mayañceva aññe ca ye mayaṁ ariyaṁ cakkavattivattaṁ dhārema. In your realm are found ministers and counselors, treasury officials, military officers, guardsmen, and professional advisers—both ourselves and others—who remember the noble duty of a wheel-turning monarch. Iṅgha tvaṁ, deva, amhe ariyaṁ cakkavattivattaṁ puccha. Please, Your Majesty, ask us about the noble duty of a wheel-turning monarch. Tassa te mayaṁ ariyaṁ cakkavattivattaṁ puṭṭhā byākarissāmā’ti. We will answer you.’ Atha kho, bhikkhave, rājā khattiyo muddhābhisitto amacce pārisajje gaṇakamahāmatte anīkaṭṭhe dovārike mantassājīvino sannipātetvā ariyaṁ cakkavattivattaṁ pucchi. So the anointed king asked the assembled ministers and counselors, treasury officials, military officers, guardsmen, and professional advisers about the noble duty of a wheel-turning monarch. ti → ādiyasīti (sya-all) Tassa te ariyaṁ cakkavattivattaṁ puṭṭhā byākariṁsu. ‘Aṭṭhānametaṁ anavakāso yaṁ ekissā lokadhātuyā dve rājāno cakkavattino apubbaṁ acarimaṁ uppajjeyyuṁ, netaṁ ṭhānaṁ vijjatī’ti pajānāti; They understand: ‘It’s impossible for two wheel-turning monarchs to arise in the same solar system at the same time.

Such is the elephant-treasure that appears to the wheel-turning monarch. Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, rañño cakkavattissa assaratanaṁ pātubhavati— Next, the horse-treasure appears to the wheel-turning monarch. Taṁ disvāna rañño cakkavattissa cittaṁ pasīdati: Seeing him, the king was impressed, Rañño, bhikkhave, cakkavattissa evarūpaṁ assaratanaṁ pātubhavati. Such is the horse-treasure that appears to the wheel-turning monarch. Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, rañño cakkavattissa maṇiratanaṁ pātubhavati. Next, the jewel-treasure appears to the wheel-turning monarch. Rañño, bhikkhave, cakkavattissa evarūpaṁ maṇiratanaṁ pātubhavati. Such is the jewel-treasure that appears to the wheel-turning monarch. Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, rañño cakkavattissa itthiratanaṁ pātubhavati. Next, the woman-treasure appears to the wheel-turning monarch. Taṁ kho pana, bhikkhave, itthiratanaṁ rañño cakkavattissa pubbuṭṭhāyinī hoti pacchānipātinī kiṅkārapaṭissāvinī manāpacārinī piyavādinī. She gets up before the king and goes to bed after him, and is obliging, behaving nicely and speaking politely. Taṁ kho pana, bhikkhave, itthiratanaṁ rājānaṁ cakkavattiṁ manasāpi no aticarati, kuto pana kāyena? The woman-treasure does not betray the wheel-turning monarch even in thought, still less in deed. Rañño, bhikkhave, cakkavattissa evarūpaṁ itthiratanaṁ pātubhavati. Such is the woman-treasure who appears to the wheel-turning monarch. Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, rañño cakkavattissa gahapatiratanaṁ pātubhavati. Next, the householder-treasure appears to the wheel-turning monarch. So rājānaṁ cakkavattiṁ upasaṅkamitvā evamāha: He approaches the wheel-turning monarch and says, Atha kho taṁ, bhikkhave, gahapatiratanaṁ ubhohi hatthehi udake omasitvā pūraṁ hiraññasuvaṇṇassa kumbhiṁ uddharitvā rājānaṁ cakkavattiṁ etadavoca: Then that householder-treasure, immersing both hands in the water, pulled up a pot full of gold coin and bullion, and said to the king, Rañño, bhikkhave, cakkavattissa evarūpaṁ gahapatiratanaṁ pātubhavati. Such is the householder-treasure that appears to the wheel-turning monarch. Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, rañño cakkavattissa pariṇāyakaratanaṁ pātubhavati— Next, the counselor-treasure appears to the wheel-turning monarch. paṇḍito byatto medhāvī paṭibalo rājānaṁ cakkavattiṁ upayāpetabbaṁ upayāpetuṁ apayāpetabbaṁ apayāpetuṁ ṭhapetabbaṁ ṭhapetuṁ. He is astute, competent, intelligent, and capable of getting the king to appoint who should be appointed, dismiss who should be dismissed, and retain who should be retained. upayāpetabbaṁ upayāpetuṁ → upaṭṭhāpetabbaṁ upaṭṭhāpetuṁ (bj, sya-all, km); upaṭṭhapetabbaṁ upaṭṭhapetuṁ (pts1ed) So rājānaṁ cakkavattiṁ upasaṅkamitvā evamāha: He approaches the wheel-turning monarch and says, Rañño, bhikkhave, cakkavattissa evarūpaṁ pariṇāyakaratanaṁ pātubhavati. Such is the counselor-treasure that appears to the wheel-turning monarch. Raññopi, bhikkhave, cakkavattissa brāhmaṇagahapatikā piyā honti manāpā. And the brahmins and householders are as dear to the wheel-turning monarch evameva kho, bhikkhave, raññopi cakkavattissa brāhmaṇagahapatikā piyā honti manāpā. mn129 Atha kho, bhikkhave, brāhmaṇagahapatikā rājānaṁ cakkavattiṁ upasaṅkamitvā evamāhaṁsu: Then the brahmins and householders went up to him and said,

Still, as he’s lacking four things, he’s not exempt from hell, the animal realm, or the ghost realm.
