“Dvemā, bhikkhave, iddhiyo.  
“There are, mendicants, these two successes.
Āmisiddhi ca dhammiddhi ca.  
Success in things of the flesh and success in the teaching.
Imā kho, bhikkhave, dve iddhiyo.  
These are the two successes.

Tassa mayhaṁ, bhikkhave, evarūpāya iddhiyā samannāgatassa evarūpena ca sukhumālena etadahosi:  
Amid such prosperity and such a delicate lifestyle, I thought:

Mahantasmiṁ kho pana lokasannivāse santi samaṇabrāhmaṇā iddhimanto dibbacakkhukā paracittaviduno.  
and there are ascetics and brahmins who have psychic power—they’re clairvoyant, and can read the minds of others.
devatāpi kho santi iddhimantiniyo dibbacakkhukā paracittaviduniyo.  
And there are deities, too, who have psychic power—they’re clairvoyant, and can read the minds of others.

‘pubbe sudaṁ appatarā ceva bhikkhū ahesuṁ bahutarā ca uttari manussadhammā iddhipāṭihāriyaṁ dassesuṁ;  
‘Formerly, it seems, there were fewer mendicants, but more of them displayed superhuman demonstrations of psychic power;
etarahi pana bahutarā ceva bhikkhū appatarā ca uttari manussadhammā iddhipāṭihāriyaṁ dassentī’ti.  
while these days, there are more mendicants, but fewer display superhuman demonstrations of psychic power.’

A demonstration of psychic power, a demonstration of revealing, and a demonstration of instruction.
Katamañca, brāhmaṇa, iddhipāṭihāriyaṁ?  
And what is the demonstration of psychic power?
Idha, brāhmaṇa, ekacco anekavihitaṁ iddhividhaṁ paccanubhoti: ‘ekopi hutvā bahudhā hoti, bahudhāpi hutvā eko hoti; āvibhāvaṁ, tirobhāvaṁ; tirokuṭṭaṁ tiropākāraṁ tiropabbataṁ asajjamāno gacchati, seyyathāpi ākāse; pathaviyāpi ummujjanimujjaṁ karoti, seyyathāpi udake; udakepi abhijjamāne gacchati, seyyathāpi pathaviyaṁ; ākāsepi pallaṅkena kamati, seyyathāpi pakkhī sakuṇo; imepi candimasūriye evaṁmahiddhike evaṁmahānubhāve pāṇinā parimasati parimajjati, yāva brahmalokāpi kāyena vasaṁ vatteti’.  
It’s when someone wields the many kinds of psychic power: multiplying themselves and becoming one again; appearing and disappearing; going unimpeded through a wall, a rampart, or a mountain as if through space; diving in and out of the earth as if it were water; walking on water as if it were earth; flying cross-legged through the sky like a bird; touching and stroking with the hand the sun and moon, so mighty and powerful. They control the body as far as the Brahmā realm. abhijjamāne → abhejjamāne (bj); abhijjamāno (pts1ed)
Idaṁ vuccati, brāhmaṇa, iddhipāṭihāriyaṁ.  
This is called the demonstration of psychic power.

For Master Gotama wields the many kinds of psychic power … controlling the body as far as the Brahmā realm.
Ahañhi, brāhmaṇa, anekavihitaṁ iddhividhaṁ paccanubhomi …pe… yāva brahmalokāpi kāyena vasaṁ vattemi.  
For I do wield the many kinds of psychic power … controlling the body as far as the Brahmā realm.

yassa me satthā evaṁmahiddhiko evaṁmahānubhāvo”ti.  
to have a teacher with such power and might!”
“kiṁ tuyhettha, āvuso ānanda, yadi te satthā evaṁmahiddhiko evaṁmahānubhāvo”ti?  
“What is it to you, Reverend Ānanda, if your teacher has such power and might?”

Tassa kho taṁ, bhikkhave, kassakassa gahapatissa natthi sā iddhi vā ānubhāvo vā:  
That farmer has no special power or ability to say:

That’s how powerful is the lion, king of beasts, among animals, how illustrious and mighty.
Evaṁ mahiddhiko kho, bhikkhave, tathāgato sadevakassa lokassa, evaṁ mahesakkho evaṁ mahānubhāvoti.  
That’s how powerful is the Realized One in the world with its gods, how illustrious and mighty.

“Bhūtapubbāhaṁ, bhante, rohitasso nāma isi ahosiṁ bhojaputto iddhimā vehāsaṅgamo.  
Once upon a time, I was a seer called Rohitassa, son of Bhoja. I was a sky-walker with psychic powers.

Tissa the Brahmā was very mighty and powerful.

“If they wanted to, a mendicant with psychic powers who has mastered their mind could determine this tree trunk to be nothing but earth.
Atthi, āvuso, amumhi dārukkhandhe pathavīdhātu, yaṁ nissāya bhikkhu iddhimā cetovasippatto amuṁ dārukkhandhaṁ pathavītveva adhimucceyya.  
Because the earth element exists in the tree trunk. Relying on that a mendicant with psychic powers could determine it to be nothing but earth.
Ākaṅkhamāno, āvuso, bhikkhu iddhimā cetovasippatto amuṁ dārukkhandhaṁ āpotveva adhimucceyya …pe…  
If they wanted to, a mendicant with psychic powers who has mastered their mind could determine this tree trunk to be nothing but water. …
Atthi, āvuso, amumhi dārukkhandhe asubhadhātu, yaṁ nissāya bhikkhu iddhimā cetovasippatto amuṁ dārukkhandhaṁ asubhantveva adhimucceyyā”ti.  
Because the element of ugliness exists in the tree trunk. Relying on that a mendicant with psychic powers could determine it to be nothing but ugly.” "

“‘So vata, bhikkhave, bhikkhu na santena samādhinā na paṇītena na paṭippassaddhiladdhena na ekodibhāvādhigatena anekavihitaṁ iddhividhaṁ paccanubhavissati—ekopi hutvā bahudhā bhavissati, bahudhāpi hutvā eko bhavissati …pe… yāva brahmalokāpi kāyena vasaṁ vattessatī’ti netaṁ ṭhānaṁ vijjati.  
“Mendicants, it’s quite impossible that a mendicant without immersion that is peaceful, refined, tranquil, and unified will wield the many kinds of psychic power: multiplying themselves and becoming one again; appearing and disappearing; going unimpeded through a wall, a rampart, or a mountain as if through space; diving in and out of the earth as if it were water; walking on water as if it were earth; flying cross-legged through the sky like a bird; touching and stroking with the hand the sun and moon, so mighty and powerful. They control the body as far as the Brahmā realm.
‘So vata, bhikkhave, bhikkhu santena samādhinā paṇītena paṭippassaddhiladdhena ekodibhāvādhigatena anekavihitaṁ iddhividhaṁ paccanubhavissati …pe… yāva brahmalokāpi kāyena vasaṁ vattessatī’ti ṭhānametaṁ vijjati.  
But it’s quite possible that a mendicant who has immersion that is peaceful, refined, tranquil, and unified will wield the many kinds of psychic power …

“ahaṁ hime vajjī evaṁmahiddhike evaṁmahānubhāve ucchecchāmi, vajjī vināsessāmi, vajjī anayabyasanaṁ āpādessāmī”ti.  
“I shall wipe out these Vajjis, so mighty and powerful! I shall destroy them, and lay ruin and devastation upon them!” ucchecchāmi → ucchejjissāmi (sya-all, pts1ed); ucchijjissāmi (mr) | anayabyasanaṁ āpādessāmī”ti → āpādessāmi vajjīti (mr)
ahaṁ hime vajjī evaṁmahiddhike evaṁmahānubhāve ucchecchāmi, vajjī vināsessāmi, vajjī anayabyasanaṁ āpādessāmī’ti.

So taṁ kammaṁ khepetvā taṁ iddhiṁ taṁ yasaṁ taṁ ādhipaccaṁ āgāmī hoti āgantā itthattaṁ.  
When that deed, success, fame, and sovereignty is spent they return to this state of existence.
So taṁ kammaṁ khepetvā taṁ iddhiṁ taṁ yasaṁ taṁ ādhipaccaṁ anāgāmī hoti anāgantā itthattaṁ.  
When that deed, success, fame, and sovereignty is spent they are a non-returner; they do not return to this state of existence.

Yatra hi nāma vessavaṇena mahārājena evaṁmahiddhikena evaṁmahesakkhena devaputtena sammukhā sallapissasī”ti.  
that you converse face to face with a mighty and illustrious god like the great king Vessavaṇa.”

Furthermore, there is an ascetic or brahmin with psychic power who has achieved mastery of the mind, or a god who is mighty and powerful. They’ve developed a limited perception of earth and a limitless perception of water. They make the earth shake and rock and tremble.

‘Oh, how incredible, how amazing! The ascetic has such psychic power and might!
Amāhaṁ bhikkhuṁ addasaṁ anekavihitaṁ iddhividhaṁ paccanubhontaṁ—ekopi hutvā bahudhā hontaṁ, bahudhāpi hutvā eko hontaṁ …pe… yāva brahmalokāpi kāyena vasaṁ vattentan’ti.  
I saw him myself, performing all these superhuman feats!’
Tāya so bhikkhu anekavihitaṁ iddhividhaṁ paccanubhoti—ekopi hutvā bahudhā hoti, bahudhāpi hutvā eko hoti …pe… yāva brahmalokāpi kāyena vasaṁ vattetī’ti.  
Using that a mendicant can perform such superhuman feats.’
“Imaṁ kho ahaṁ, kevaṭṭa, iddhipāṭihāriye ādīnavaṁ sampassamāno iddhipāṭihāriyena aṭṭīyāmi harāyāmi jigucchāmi.  
“Seeing this drawback in psychic power, I’m horrified, repelled, and disgusted by demonstrations of psychic power.
‘acchariyaṁ vata bho, abbhutaṁ vata bho, samaṇassa mahiddhikatā mahānubhāvatā.  
‘Oh, how incredible, how amazing! The ascetic has such psychic power and might!

‘indamavhayāma, somamavhayāma, varuṇamavhayāma, īsānamavhayāma, pajāpatimavhayāma, brahmamavhayāma, mahiddhimavhayāma, yamamavhayāmā’ti.  
‘We call upon Indra! We call upon Soma! We call upon Varuṇa! We call upon Īsāna! We call upon the Progenitor! We call upon Brahmā! We call upon Mahinda! We call upon Yama!’

“acchariyaṁ, āvuso, abbhutaṁ, āvuso, tathāgatassa mahiddhikatā mahānubhāvatā.  
“It’s incredible, reverends, it’s amazing! The Realized One has such psychic power and might!

Even in the boundless desolation of interstellar space—so utterly dark that even the light of the moon and the sun, so mighty and powerful, makes no impression—an immeasurable, magnificent light appears, surpassing the glory of the gods.

Puna caparaṁ, ānanda, samaṇo vā hoti brāhmaṇo vā iddhimā cetovasippatto, devo vā mahiddhiko mahānubhāvo, tassa parittā pathavīsaññā bhāvitā hoti, appamāṇā āposaññā. So imaṁ pathaviṁ kampeti saṅkampeti sampakampeti sampavedheti.  
Furthermore, there is an ascetic or brahmin with psychic power who has achieved mastery of the mind, or a god who is mighty and powerful. They’ve developed a limited perception of earth and a limitless perception of water. They make the earth shake and rock and tremble.

Seyyathidaṁ—cattāro satipaṭṭhānā, cattāro sammappadhānā, cattāro iddhipādā, pañcindriyāni, pañca balāni, satta bojjhaṅgā, ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo.  
They are: the four kinds of mindfulness meditation, the four right efforts, the four bases of psychic power, the five faculties, the five powers, the seven awakening factors, and the noble eightfold path.
“acchariyaṁ vata bho, abbhutaṁ vata bho, tathāgatassa mahiddhikatā mahānubhāvatā.  
“Oh, how incredible, how amazing! The Realized One has such psychic power and might!
“acchariyaṁ, bhante, abbhutaṁ, bhante, tathāgatassa mahiddhikatā mahānubhāvatā.  
“It’s incredible, sir, it’s amazing! The Realized One has such psychic power and might!

sabbaseto sattappatiṭṭho iddhimā vehāsaṅgamo uposatho nāma nāgarājā.  
It was an all-white sky-walker with psychic power, touching the ground in seven places, a king of elephants named Sabbath.
sabbaseto kāḷasīso muñjakeso iddhimā vehāsaṅgamo valāhako nāma assarājā.  
It was an all-white sky-walker with psychic power, with head of black and mane like woven reeds, a royal steed named Thundercloud.
3. Catuiddhisamannāgata  
3. The Four Blessings
Rājā, ānanda, mahāsudassano imāya paṭhamāya iddhiyā samannāgato ahosi.  
This is the first blessing.
Rājā, ānanda, mahāsudassano imāya dutiyāya iddhiyā samannāgato ahosi.  
This is the second blessing.
Rājā, ānanda, mahāsudassano imāya tatiyāya iddhiyā samannāgato ahosi.  
This is the third blessing.
Rājā, ānanda, mahāsudassano imāya catutthiyā iddhiyā samannāgato ahosi.  
This is the fourth blessing. catutthiyā → catutthāya (sya-all, km, pts1ed)
‘kissa nu kho me idaṁ kammassa phalaṁ kissa kammassa vipāko, yenāhaṁ etarahi evaṁmahiddhiko evaṁmahānubhāvo’ti?  
‘Of what deed of mine is this the fruit and result, that I am now so mighty and powerful?’
‘tiṇṇaṁ kho me idaṁ kammānaṁ phalaṁ tiṇṇaṁ kammānaṁ vipāko, yenāhaṁ etarahi evaṁmahiddhiko evaṁmahānubhāvo, seyyathidaṁ—  
‘It is the fruit and result of three kinds of deeds:

“Taṁ kiṁ maññanti, bhonto devā tāvatiṁsā, yāva supaññattā cime tena bhagavatā jānatā passatā arahatā sammāsambuddhena cattāro iddhipādā paññattā iddhipahutāya iddhivisavitāya iddhivikubbanatāya.  
“What do the good gods of the Thirty-Three think? How well described by the Blessed One—who knows and sees, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha—are the four bases of psychic power! They are taught for the amplification, burgeoning, and transformation of psychic power. iddhipahutāya → iddhibahulīkatāya (sya-all, km)
Idha bho bhikkhu chandasamādhippadhānasaṅkhārasamannāgataṁ iddhipādaṁ bhāveti.  
It’s when a mendicant develops the basis of psychic power that has immersion due to enthusiasm, and active effort.
Vīriyasamādhippadhānasaṅkhārasamannāgataṁ iddhipādaṁ bhāveti.  
They develop the basis of psychic power that has immersion due to energy, and active effort.
Cittasamādhippadhānasaṅkhārasamannāgataṁ iddhipādaṁ bhāveti.  
They develop the basis of psychic power that has immersion due to mental development, and active effort.
Vīmaṁsāsamādhippadhānasaṅkhārasamannāgataṁ iddhipādaṁ bhāveti.  
They develop the basis of psychic power that has immersion due to inquiry, and active effort.
Ime kho, bho, tena bhagavatā jānatā passatā arahatā sammāsambuddhena cattāro iddhipādā paññattā iddhipahutāya iddhivisavitāya iddhivikubbanatāya.  
These are the four bases of psychic power taught by the Buddha for the amplification, burgeoning, and transformation of psychic power.
Ye hi keci bho atītamaddhānaṁ samaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vā anekavihitaṁ iddhividhaṁ paccanubhosuṁ, sabbe te imesaṁyeva catunnaṁ iddhipādānaṁ bhāvitattā bahulīkatattā.  
All the ascetics and brahmins in the past,
Yepi hi keci bho anāgatamaddhānaṁ samaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vā anekavihitaṁ iddhividhaṁ paccanubhossanti, sabbe te imesaṁyeva catunnaṁ iddhipādānaṁ bhāvitattā bahulīkatattā.

Yepi hi keci bho etarahi samaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vā anekavihitaṁ iddhividhaṁ paccanubhonti, sabbe te imesaṁyeva catunnaṁ iddhipādānaṁ bhāvitattā bahulīkatattā.  
or present who wield the many kinds of psychic power do so by developing and cultivating these four bases of psychic power.
“Ahampi kho bho imesaṁyeva catunnañca iddhipādānaṁ bhāvitattā bahulīkatattā evaṁ mahiddhiko evaṁmahānubhāvo”ti.  
“I too became so mighty and powerful by developing and cultivating these four bases of psychic power.”

‘But sir, the Buddha never performs any superhuman demonstrations of psychic power for me.’
ehi tvaṁ, sunakkhatta, mamaṁ uddissa viharāhi, ahaṁ te uttari manussadhammā iddhipāṭihāriyaṁ karissāmī’ti?  
“Come, live dedicated to me and I will perform a superhuman demonstration of psychic power for you”?’
ahaṁ, bhante, bhagavantaṁ uddissa viharissāmi, bhagavā me uttari manussadhammā iddhipāṭihāriyaṁ karissatī’ti?  
“Sir, I shall live dedicated to the Buddha, and the Buddha will perform a superhuman demonstration of psychic power for me”?’

‘Iti kira, sunakkhatta, kate vā uttari manussadhammā iddhipāṭihāriye, akate vā uttari manussadhammā iddhipāṭihāriye, yassatthāya mayā dhammo desito, so niyyāti takkarassa sammā dukkhakkhayāya.  
‘So it seems that whether or not there is a demonstration of psychic power, my teaching leads someone who practices it to the goal of the complete ending of suffering.
Tatra, sunakkhatta, kiṁ uttari manussadhammā iddhipāṭihāriyaṁ kataṁ karissati?  
In that case, what is the point of superhuman demonstrations of psychic power?
yadi evaṁ sante kataṁ vā hoti uttari manussadhammā iddhipāṭihāriyaṁ, akataṁ vā’ti?  
If that is so, has a superhuman demonstration of psychic power been performed or not?’
‘Addhā kho, bhante, evaṁ sante kataṁ hoti uttari manussadhammā iddhipāṭihāriyaṁ, no akatan’ti.  
‘Clearly, sir, a superhuman demonstration of psychic power has been performed.’
‘Evampi kho maṁ tvaṁ, moghapurisa, uttari manussadhammā iddhipāṭihāriyaṁ karontaṁ evaṁ vadesi—  
‘Though I performed such a superhuman demonstration of psychic power you say this:
na hi pana me, bhante, bhagavā uttari manussadhammā iddhipāṭihāriyaṁ karotīti.  
“But sir, the Buddha never performs any superhuman demonstrations of psychic power for me.”

One who speaks from knowledge ought to display a superhuman demonstration of psychic power to another who speaks from knowledge.
Te tattha ubhopi uttari manussadhammā iddhipāṭihāriyaṁ kareyyāma.  
there we should both perform a superhuman demonstration of psychic power.
Ekañce samaṇo gotamo uttari manussadhammā iddhipāṭihāriyaṁ karissati, dvāhaṁ karissāmi.  
If he performs one demonstration of psychic power, I’ll perform two.
Dve ce samaṇo gotamo uttari manussadhammā iddhipāṭihāriyāni karissati, cattārāhaṁ karissāmi.  
If he performs two, I’ll perform four.
Cattāri ce samaṇo gotamo uttari manussadhammā iddhipāṭihāriyāni karissati, aṭṭhāhaṁ karissāmi.  
If he performs four, I’ll perform eight.

Come forth, sirs, come forth! There will be a superhuman demonstration of psychic power by the holy ascetics!’
‘sādhurūpānaṁ kira, bho, samaṇānaṁ uttari manussadhammā iddhipāṭihāriyaṁ bhavissati;  
‘It seems there will be a superhuman demonstration of psychic power by the holy ascetics!
Abhikkamathāyasmanto abhikkamathāyasmanto, sādhurūpānaṁ samaṇānaṁ uttari manussadhammā iddhipāṭihāriyaṁ bhavissatī’ti.

“Oh, how incredible, how amazing! The ascetic Gotama has such power and might! For he sets aside his own doctrine and invites discussion on the doctrine of others!”

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu chandasamādhipadhānasaṅkhārasamannāgataṁ iddhipādaṁ bhāveti,

Having developed and cultivated these four bases of psychic power they may, if they wish, live for the proper lifespan or what’s left of it.

Aparaṁ pana, bhante, etadānuttariyaṁ, yathā bhagavā dhammaṁ deseti iddhividhāsu.  
And moreover, sir, how the Buddha teaches psychic power is unsurpassable.
Dvemā, bhante, iddhividhāyo—  
There are these two kinds of psychic power.
atthi, bhante, iddhi sāsavā saupadhikā, ‘no ariyā’ti vuccati.  
There are psychic powers that are accompanied by defilements and attachments, and are said to be ignoble.
Atthi, bhante, iddhi anāsavā anupadhikā ‘ariyā’ti vuccati.  
And there are psychic powers that are free of defilements and attachments, and are said to be noble.
Katamā ca, bhante, iddhi sāsavā saupadhikā, ‘no ariyā’ti vuccati?  
What are the psychic powers that are accompanied by defilements and attachments, and are said to be ignoble?
idha, bhante, ekacco samaṇo vā brāhmaṇo vā ātappamanvāya …pe… tathārūpaṁ cetosamādhiṁ phusati, yathāsamāhite citte anekavihitaṁ iddhividhaṁ paccanubhoti—  
It’s when some ascetic or brahmin—by dint of keen, resolute, committed, and diligent effort, and right application of mind—experiences an immersion of the heart of such a kind that they wield the many kinds of psychic power:
ekopi hutvā bahudhā hoti, bahudhāpi hutvā eko hoti; āvibhāvaṁ tirobhāvaṁ tirokuṭṭaṁ tiropākāraṁ tiropabbataṁ asajjamāno gacchati seyyathāpi ākāse; pathaviyāpi ummujjanimujjaṁ karoti seyyathāpi udake; udakepi abhijjamāne gacchati seyyathāpi pathaviyaṁ; ākāsepi pallaṅkena kamati seyyathāpi pakkhī sakuṇo; imepi candimasūriye evaṁmahiddhike evaṁmahānubhāve pāṇinā parāmasati parimajjati; yāva brahmalokāpi kāyena vasaṁ vatteti.  
multiplying themselves and becoming one again; appearing and disappearing; going unimpeded through a wall, a rampart, or a mountain as if through space; diving in and out of the earth as if it were water; walking on water as if it were earth; flying cross-legged through the sky like a bird; touching and stroking with the hand the sun and moon, so mighty and powerful; controlling the body as far as the Brahmā realm.
Ayaṁ, bhante, iddhi sāsavā saupadhikā, ‘no ariyā’ti vuccati.  
These are the psychic powers that are accompanied by defilements and attachments, and are said to be ignoble.
Katamā pana, bhante, iddhi anāsavā anupadhikā, ‘ariyā’ti vuccati?  
But what are the psychic powers that are free of defilements and attachments, and are said to be noble?
Ayaṁ, bhante, iddhi anāsavā anupadhikā ‘ariyā’ti vuccati.  
These are the psychic powers that are free of defilements and attachments, and are said to be noble.
Etadānuttariyaṁ, bhante, iddhividhāsu.  
This is unsurpassable when it comes to psychic powers.
Taṁ bhagavā asesamabhijānāti, taṁ bhagavato asesamabhijānato uttari abhiññeyyaṁ natthi, yadabhijānaṁ añño samaṇo vā brāhmaṇo vā bhagavatā bhiyyobhiññataro assa yadidaṁ iddhividhāsu.  
The Buddha understands this without exception. There is nothing to be understood beyond this whereby another ascetic or brahmin might be superior in direct knowledge to the Buddha when it comes to psychic powers.
Yatra hi nāma tathāgato evaṁmahiddhiko evaṁmahānubhāvo, atha ca pana nevattānaṁ pātukarissati.  
For even though the Realized One has such power and might, he will not make a display of himself.
Yatra hi nāma tathāgato evaṁmahiddhiko evaṁmahānubhāvo. Atha ca pana nevattānaṁ pātukarissatī”ti.  
For even though the Realized One has such power and might, he will not make a display of himself.”

Seyyathidaṁ—cattāro satipaṭṭhānā, cattāro sammappadhānā, cattāro iddhipādā, pañcindriyāni, pañca balāni, satta bojjhaṅgā, ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo.  
They are the four kinds of mindfulness meditation, the four right efforts, the four bases of psychic power, the five faculties, the five powers, the seven awakening factors, and the noble eightfold path.

Yāpayati ca vasiddhibhāvanāya,  
mastery in the development of psychic power.

iddhipāṭihāriyaṁ, ādesanāpāṭihāriyaṁ, anusāsanīpāṭihāriyaṁ.  
The demonstration of psychic power, the demonstration of revealing, and the demonstration of instruction.
Cattāro iddhipādā.  
Four bases of psychic power:
Idhāvuso, bhikkhu chandasamādhipadhānasaṅkhārasamannāgataṁ iddhipādaṁ bhāveti.  
A mendicant develops the basis of psychic power that has immersion due to enthusiasm, and active effort.
Cittasamādhipadhānasaṅkhārasamannāgataṁ iddhipādaṁ bhāveti.  
They develop the basis of psychic power that has immersion due to mental development, and active effort.
Vīriyasamādhipadhānasaṅkhārasamannāgataṁ iddhipādaṁ bhāveti.  
They develop the basis of psychic power that has immersion due to energy, and active effort.
Vīmaṁsāsamādhipadhānasaṅkhārasamannāgataṁ iddhipādaṁ bhāveti.  
They develop the basis of psychic power that has immersion due to inquiry, and active effort.

‘kissa nu kho me idaṁ kammassa phalaṁ, kissa kammassa vipāko, yenāhaṁ etarahi evaṁmahiddhiko evaṁmahānubhāvo’ti?  
‘Of what deed of mine is this the fruit and result, that I am now so mighty and powerful?’
‘tiṇṇaṁ kho me idaṁ kammānaṁ phalaṁ, tiṇṇaṁ kammānaṁ vipāko, yenāhaṁ etarahi evaṁmahiddhiko evaṁmahānubhāvoti, seyyathidaṁ—

Iddhimanto yasassino;  
powerful and glorious,

Māyākataṁ kuhanaṁ giddhi mānaṁ;  
deception, fraud, greed, conceit,

Daharopi cesa samaṇo gotamo mahiddhiko hoti mahānubhāvo, yannūnāhaṁ samaṇaṁ gotamaṁ upasaṅkamitvā ime pañhe puccheyyan”ti.  
Though young, the ascetic Gotama has great psychic power and might. Why don’t I ask him this question?”

“ko nu kho, āvuso, imesaṁ dvinnaṁ rājūnaṁ mahaddhanataro vā mahābhogataro vā mahākosataro vā mahāvijitataro vā mahāvāhanataro vā mahabbalataro vā mahiddhikataro vā mahānubhāvataro vā rājā vā māgadho seniyo bimbisāro, rājā vā pasenadi kosalo”ti?  
“Which of these two kings has greater wealth, riches, treasury, dominion, vehicles, forces, might, and power: King Seniya Bimbisāra of Magadha or King Pasenadi of Kosala?”

“acchariyaṁ vata bho, abbhutaṁ vata bho, tathāgatassa mahiddhikatā mahānubhāvatā, yatra hi nāmāyaṁ suppavāsā koliyadhītā saha vacanā ca pana bhagavato sukhinī arogā arogaṁ puttaṁ vijāyissatī”ti.  
“Oh, how incredible, how amazing! The Realized One has such psychic power and might! For as soon as he spoke, Suppavāsā, happy and healthy, gave birth to a healthy child.” saha vacanā ca pana → saha vacanā pana (pts-vp-pli1); saha vacanā (?)

Uḷāro so, samma, samaṇo mahiddhiko mahānubhāvo”ti.  
That is an eminent ascetic, powerful and mighty!”

Yāva mahiddhiko āyasmā mahāmoggallāno mahānubhāvo yatra hi nāma yakkhampi passissati.  
How mighty and powerful is Venerable Moggallāna, in that he can even see a native spirit! Yāva → yaṁ (sya-all) "

mahiddhiko camhi mahānubhāvo.  
I am of great might and power.

evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, ayaṁ dhammavinayo bahuratano anekaratano; tatrimāni ratanāni, seyyathidaṁ—cattāro satipaṭṭhānā, cattāro sammappadhānā, cattāro iddhipādā, pañcindriyāni, pañca balāni, satta bojjhaṅgā, ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo.  
In the same way, this teaching and training is full of many kinds of treasures, such as the four kinds of mindfulness meditation, the four right efforts, the four bases of psychic power, the five faculties, the five powers, the seven awakening factors, and the noble eightfold path.

“Eso, bhikkhave, bhikkhu mahiddhiko mahānubhāvo. Na ca sā samāpatti sulabharūpā yā tena bhikkhunā asamāpannapubbā.  
“That mendicant is very mighty and powerful. It’s not easy to find an attainment that he has not already attained.

“acchariyaṁ vata bho, abbhutaṁ vata bho, tathāgatassa mahiddhikatā mahānubhāvatā.  
“Oh, how incredible, how amazing! The Realized One has such psychic power and might!

A mendicant might wish: ‘May I wield the many kinds of psychic power: multiplying myself and becoming one again; appearing and disappearing; going unimpeded through a wall, a rampart, or a mountain as if through space; diving in and out of the earth as if it were water; walking on water as if it were earth; flying cross-legged through the sky like a bird; touching and stroking with my hand the sun and moon, so mighty and powerful; controlling the body as far as the Brahmā realm.’ So let them fulfill their precepts …

‘That Blessed One wields the many kinds of psychic power: multiplying himself and becoming one again; appearing and disappearing; going unimpeded through a wall, a rampart, or a mountain as if through space; diving in and out of the earth as if it were water; walking on water as if it were earth; flying cross-legged through the sky like a bird; touching and stroking with the hand the sun and moon, so mighty and powerful; controlling the body as far as the Brahmā realm.’

So chandasamādhipadhānasaṅkhārasamannāgataṁ iddhipādaṁ bhāveti,  
They develop the basis of psychic power that has immersion due to enthusiasm, and active effort …
vīriyasamādhipadhānasaṅkhārasamannāgataṁ iddhipādaṁ bhāveti,  
the basis of psychic power that has immersion due to energy, and active effort …
cittasamādhipadhānasaṅkhārasamannāgataṁ iddhipādaṁ bhāveti,  
the basis of psychic power that has immersion due to mental development, and active effort …
vīmaṁsāsamādhipadhānasaṅkhārasamannāgataṁ iddhipādaṁ bhāveti, ussoḷhīyeva pañcamī.  
the basis of psychic power that has immersion due to inquiry, and active effort. And the fifth is sheer vigor.

‘saṭhāssunāmime tatiyā migajātā ketabino, iddhimantāssunāmime tatiyā migajātā parajanā;  
‘Wow, this third herd of deer is so sneaky and devious, they must be some kind of strange spirits with magical abilities!
“saṭhāssunāmime tatiyā migajātā ketabino, iddhimantāssunāmime tatiyā migajātā parajanā, imañca nāma nivāpaṁ nivuttaṁ paribhuñjanti.

Samaṇassa mahiddhikatā mahānubhāvatā, yatra hi nāma dibbabhavanaṁ pādaṅguṭṭhakena saṅkampessati sampakampessati sampavedhessatī”ti.  
The ascetic has such power and might that he makes the god’s home shake and rock and tremble with his big toe!”
yassa te sabrahmacārī evaṁmahiddhiko evaṁmahānubhāvo.  
to have a spiritual companion of such power and might!

“evaṁ mahiddhiko bako brahmā, evaṁ mahānubhāvo bako brahmā, evaṁ mahesakkho bako brahmā”ti.  
“That’s how powerful is Baka the Brahmā, how illustrious and mighty.”’
“evaṁ mahiddhiko bako brahmā, evaṁ mahānubhāvo bako brahmā, evaṁ mahesakkho bako brahmā”’ti?

agiddhilobhaṁ nissāya giddhilobho pahātabbo;  
Greed and lust should be given up, relying on not being greedy and lustful.
‘Agiddhilobhaṁ nissāya giddhilobho pahātabbo’ti iti kho panetaṁ vuttaṁ, kiñcetaṁ paṭicca vuttaṁ?

“Dasapi, bhante, nāḷandā, vīsampi nāḷandā, tiṁsampi nāḷandā, cattārīsampi nāḷandā, paññāsampi nāḷandā pahoti so samaṇo vā brāhmaṇo vā iddhimā cetovasippatto ekena manopadosena bhasmaṁ kātuṁ.  
“Sir, an ascetic or brahmin with psychic power, who has achieved mastery of the mind, could reduce ten, twenty, thirty, forty, or fifty Nāḷandās to ashes with a single malevolent act of will.

‘abhayena rājakumārena samaṇassa gotamassa evaṁ mahiddhikassa evaṁ mahānubhāvassa vādo āropito’”ti.  
‘Prince Abhaya refuted the doctrine of the ascetic Gotama, so mighty and powerful!’”
“Yathā kathaṁ panāhaṁ, bhante, samaṇassa gotamassa evaṁ mahiddhikassa evaṁ mahānubhāvassa vādaṁ āropessāmī”ti?  
“But sir, how am I to do this?”
abhayena rājakumārena samaṇassa gotamassa evaṁ mahiddhikassa evaṁ mahānubhāvassa vādo āropito’ti.

he has the three knowledges, and is very mighty and powerful.

vīmaṁsāsamādhipadhānasaṅkhārasamannāgataṁ iddhipādaṁ bhāveti.  
They develop the basis of psychic power that has immersion due to inquiry, and active effort.
Puna caparaṁ, udāyi, akkhātā mayā sāvakānaṁ paṭipadā, yathāpaṭipannā me sāvakā anekavihitaṁ iddhividhaṁ paccanubhonti—ekopi hutvā bahudhā honti, bahudhāpi hutvā eko hoti; āvibhāvaṁ, tirobhāvaṁ; tirokuṭṭaṁ tiropākāraṁ tiropabbataṁ asajjamānā gacchanti, seyyathāpi ākāse; pathaviyāpi ummujjanimujjaṁ karonti, seyyathāpi udake; udakepi abhijjamāne gacchanti, seyyathāpi pathaviyaṁ; ākāsepi pallaṅkena kamanti, seyyathāpi pakkhī sakuṇo; imepi candimasūriye evaṁmahiddhike evaṁmahānubhāve pāṇinā parimasanti parimajjanti, yāva brahmalokāpi kāyena vasaṁ vattenti.  
Furthermore, I have explained to my disciples a practice that they use to wield the many kinds of psychic power: multiplying themselves and becoming one again; appearing and disappearing; going unimpeded through a wall, a rampart, or a mountain as if through space; diving in and out of the earth as if it were water; walking on water as if it were earth; flying cross-legged through the sky like a bird; touching and stroking with the hand the sun and moon, so mighty and powerful. Appekadāhaṁ, bho raṭṭhapāla, iddhimāva maññe na attano balena samasamaṁ samanupassāmī”ti.  
Sometimes it seems as if I had superpowers then. I don’t see anyone who could have equalled me in strength.” iddhimāva maññe na → iddhimā ca maññe (si); iddhimā maññe (cck); iddhimā maññe na (sya1ed, sya2ed, km); na viya maññe (mr)

“Aṭṭhānaṁ kho etaṁ, māṇava, anavakāso yaṁ nissaṭṭhatiṇakaṭṭhupādānaṁ aggiṁ jāleyya aññatra iddhimatā.  
“But it isn’t possible, except by psychic power.

cattāro satipaṭṭhānā cattāro sammappadhānā cattāro iddhipādā pañcindriyāni pañca balāni satta bojjhaṅgā ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo, tattha sabbeheva samaggehi sammodamānehi avivadamānehi sikkhitabbaṁ.  
the four kinds of mindfulness meditation, the four right efforts, the four bases of psychic power, the five faculties, the five powers, the seven awakening factors, and the noble eightfold path. You should train in these things in harmony, appreciating each other, without quarreling.

cattāro satipaṭṭhānā cattāro sammappadhānā cattāro iddhipādā pañcindriyāni pañca balāni satta bojjhaṅgā ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo, passasi no tvaṁ, ānanda, imesu dhammesu dvepi bhikkhū nānāvāde”ti?  
the four kinds of mindfulness meditation, the four right efforts, the four bases of psychic power, the five faculties, the five powers, the seven awakening factors, and the noble eightfold path?”

So anekavihitaṁ iddhividhaṁ paccānubhoti. Ekopi hutvā bahudhā hoti, bahudhāpi hutvā eko hoti, āvibhāvaṁ …pe… yāva brahmalokāpi kāyena vasaṁ vatteti.  
They wield the many kinds of psychic power: multiplying themselves and becoming one again … They control the body as far as the Brahmā realm.

“acchariyaṁ, āvuso, abbhutaṁ, āvuso. Tathāgatassa mahiddhikatā mahānubhāvatā,  
“It’s incredible, sir, it’s amazing! The Realized One has such psychic power and might!
‘acchariyaṁ, āvuso, abbhutaṁ, āvuso, tathāgatassa mahiddhikatā mahānubhāvatā, yatra hi nāma tathāgato atīte buddhe parinibbute chinnapapañce chinnavaṭume pariyādinnavaṭṭe sabbadukkhavītivatte jānissati—

It was an all-white sky-walker with psychic power, touching the ground in seven places, a king of elephants named Sabbath.
sabbaseto kāḷasīso muñjakeso iddhimā vehāsaṅgamo valāhako nāma assarājā.  
It was an all-white sky-walker with psychic power, with head of black and mane like woven reeds, a royal steed named Thundercloud.
Rājā, bhikkhave, cakkavattī imāya paṭhamāya iddhiyā samannāgato hoti.  
This is the first blessing.
Rājā, bhikkhave, cakkavattī imāya dutiyāya iddhiyā samannāgato hoti.  
This is the second blessing.
Rājā, bhikkhave, cakkavattī imāya tatiyāya iddhiyā samannāgato hoti.  
This is the third blessing.
Rājā, bhikkhave, cakkavattī imāya catutthāya iddhiyā samannāgato hoti.  
This is the fourth blessing.

Atha kho āyasmā samiddhi rattiyā paccūsasamayaṁ paccuṭṭhāya yena tapodo tenupasaṅkami gattāni parisiñcituṁ.  
Then Venerable Samiddhi rose at the crack of dawn and went to the hot springs to bathe. tapodo → tapodā (si)
Atha kho aññatarā devatā abhikkantāya rattiyā abhikkantavaṇṇā kevalakappaṁ tapodaṁ obhāsetvā yenāyasmā samiddhi tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā ekamantaṁ aṭṭhāsi. Ekamantaṁ ṭhitā kho sā devatā āyasmantaṁ samiddhiṁ etadavoca:  
Then, late at night, a glorious deity, lighting up the entire hot springs, went up to Samiddhi, stood to one side, and said to Samiddhi:
Atha kho āyasmā samiddhi tassā rattiyā accayena yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā samiddhi bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:  
Then, when the night had passed, Samiddhi went to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and told him what had happened. Then he added:
“Evaṁ, bhante”ti kho āyasmā samiddhi bhagavato paccassosi.  
“Yes, sir,” Samiddhi replied.

Tena kho pana samayena āyasmā samiddhi araññakuṭikāyaṁ viharati.  
Now at that time Venerable Samiddhi was staying in a wilderness hut.
Atha kho potaliputto paribbājako jaṅghāvihāraṁ anucaṅkamamāno anuvicaramāno yenāyasmā samiddhi tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā āyasmatā samiddhinā saddhiṁ sammodi.  
Then as the wanderer Potaliputta was going for a walk he came up to Venerable Samiddhi and exchanged greetings with him.
Sammodanīyaṁ kathaṁ sāraṇīyaṁ vītisāretvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho potaliputto paribbājako āyasmantaṁ samiddhiṁ etadavoca:  
When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to him:
“sammukhā metaṁ, āvuso samiddhi, samaṇassa gotamassa sutaṁ, sammukhā paṭiggahitaṁ:  
“Reverend Samiddhi, I have heard and learned this in the presence of the ascetic Gotama:
Sañcetanikaṁ, āvuso samiddhi, kammaṁ katvā kāyena vācāya manasā kiṁ so vediyatī”ti?  
After doing an intentional deed by way of body, speech, or mind, reverend, what does one feel?”
Atha kho potaliputto paribbājako āyasmato samiddhissa bhāsitaṁ neva abhinandi nappaṭikkosi;  
Then, neither approving nor dismissing Samiddhi’s statement, Potaliputta
Atha kho āyasmā samiddhi acirapakkante potaliputte paribbājake yenāyasmā ānando tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā āyasmatā ānandena saddhiṁ sammodi.  
Soon after he had left, Venerable Samiddhi went to Venerable Ānanda, and exchanged greetings with him.
Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā samiddhi yāvatako ahosi potaliputtena paribbājakena saddhiṁ kathāsallāpo taṁ sabbaṁ āyasmato ānandassa ārocesi.  
and informed Ānanda of all they had discussed.
Evaṁ vutte, āyasmā ānando āyasmantaṁ samiddhiṁ etadavoca:  
When he had spoken, Ānanda said to him,
“atthi kho idaṁ, āvuso samiddhi, kathāpābhataṁ bhagavantaṁ dassanāya.  
“Reverend Samiddhi, we should see the Buddha about this matter.
Āyāmāvuso samiddhi, yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamissāma; upasaṅkamitvā etamatthaṁ bhagavato ārocessāma.  
Come, let’s go to the Buddha and inform him about this.
“Evamāvuso”ti kho āyasmā samiddhi āyasmato ānandassa paccassosi.  
“Yes, reverend,” Samiddhi replied.
Atha kho āyasmā ca ānando āyasmā ca samiddhi yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṁsu; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdiṁsu.  
Then Ānanda and Samiddhi went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side,
Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā ānando yāvatako ahosi āyasmato samiddhissa potaliputtena paribbājakena saddhiṁ kathāsallāpo taṁ sabbaṁ bhagavato ārocesi.  
and told him what had happened.
Iminā ca, ānanda, samiddhinā moghapurisena potaliputtassa paribbājakassa vibhajjabyākaraṇīyo pañho ekaṁsena byākato”ti.  
The wanderer Potaliputta’s question should have been answered after analyzing it, but this foolish person answered definitively.”
“sace pana, bhante, āyasmatā samiddhinā idaṁ sandhāya bhāsitaṁ—  
“But perhaps, sir, Venerable Samiddhi spoke in reference to the statement: sace pana → kiṁ pana (mr)
Sacāyaṁ, ānanda, samiddhi moghapuriso potaliputtassa paribbājakassa evaṁ puṭṭho evaṁ byākareyya:  
Suppose the foolish person Samiddhi had answered the wanderer Potaliputta’s question like this:
Evaṁ byākaramāno kho, ānanda, samiddhi moghapuriso potaliputtassa paribbājakassa sammā byākaramāno byākareyya.  
Answering in this way, Samiddhi would have rightly answered Potaliputta. byākaramāno → idaṁ padaṁ bj, sya-all, km, pts1ed potthakesu

Tassa evaṁ imaṁ ariyaṁ aṭṭhaṅgikaṁ maggaṁ bhāvayato cattāropi satipaṭṭhānā bhāvanāpāripūriṁ gacchanti, cattāropi sammappadhānā bhāvanāpāripūriṁ gacchanti, cattāropi iddhipādā bhāvanāpāripūriṁ gacchanti, pañcapi indriyāni bhāvanāpāripūriṁ gacchanti, pañcapi balāni bhāvanāpāripūriṁ gacchanti, sattapi bojjhaṅgā bhāvanāpāripūriṁ gacchanti.  
When the noble eightfold path is developed, the following are fully developed: the four kinds of mindfulness meditation, the four right efforts, the four bases of psychic power, the five faculties, the five powers, and the seven awakening factors.

Then Venerable Samiddhi rose at the crack of dawn and went to the hot springs to bathe.

Then that deity landed on the ground and said to Samiddhi, pathaviyaṁ → paṭhaviyaṁ (bj, sya-all, km, pts2ed)
“Evamāvuso”ti kho āyasmā samiddhi tassā devatāya paṭissutvā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā samiddhi bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:  
“Yes, good sir,” Venerable Samiddhi replied. He went to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and told him what had happened. Then he added:
Evaṁ vutte, sā devatā āyasmantaṁ samiddhiṁ etadavoca:  
When he had spoken, that deity said to Samiddhi,
Dasamo vutto samiddhināti. "  

Bhūtapubbāhaṁ, bhante, rohitasso nāma isi ahosiṁ bhojaputto iddhimā vehāsaṅgamo.  
Once upon a time, I was a seer called Rohitassa of the Bhoja people. I was a sky-walker with psychic powers.

“Bhagavatā kho, bhante, cattāro iddhipādā bhāvitā bahulīkatā yānīkatā vatthukatā anuṭṭhitā paricitā susamāraddhā.  
“The Blessed One, sir, has developed and cultivated the four bases for psychic power, made them a vehicle and a basis, kept them up, consolidated them, and properly implemented them.

Samiddhisutta  
With Samiddhi
Tena kho pana samayena āyasmā samiddhi bhagavato avidūre appamatto ātāpī pahitatto viharati.  
Now at that time Venerable Samiddhi was meditating not far from the Buddha, diligent, keen, and resolute.
Atha kho āyasmato samiddhissa rahogatassa paṭisallīnassa evaṁ cetaso parivitakko udapādi:  
Then as Venerable Samiddhi was in private retreat this thought came to his mind,
Atha kho māro pāpimā āyasmato samiddhissa cetasā cetoparivitakkamaññāya yenāyasmā samiddhi tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā āyasmato samiddhissa avidūre mahantaṁ bhayabheravaṁ saddamakāsi, apissudaṁ pathavī maññe undrīyati.  
And then Māra the Wicked, knowing what Samiddhi was thinking, went up to him and made a terrifyingly loud noise close by him. It seemed as if the earth was shattering.
Atha kho āyasmā samiddhi yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno āyasmā samiddhi bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:  
Then Samiddhi went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and told him what had happened. The Buddha said,
“Nesā, samiddhi, pathavī undrīyati.  
“Samiddhi, that’s not the earth shattering.
Gaccha tvaṁ, samiddhi, tattheva appamatto ātāpī pahitatto viharāhī”ti.  
Go back to that same place, Samiddhi, and meditate, diligent, keen, and resolute.”
“Evaṁ, bhante”ti kho āyasmā samiddhi bhagavato paṭissutvā uṭṭhāyāsanā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā padakkhiṇaṁ katvā pakkāmi.  
“Yes, sir,” replied Samiddhi. He got up from his seat, bowed, and respectfully circled the Buddha, keeping him on his right, before leaving.
Dutiyampi kho āyasmā samiddhi tattheva appamatto ātāpī pahitatto vihāsi.  
And for a second time Samiddhi was meditating in that same place, diligent, ardent, and resolute.
Dutiyampi kho āyasmato samiddhissa rahogatassa paṭisallīnassa …pe…  
And for a second time he had the same thought …
dutiyampi kho māro pāpimā āyasmato samiddhissa cetasā cetoparivitakkamaññāya …pe…  
and Māra made an earth-shattering noise.
Atha kho āyasmā samiddhi māraṁ pāpimantaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi:  
Then Samiddhi addressed Māra the Wicked One in verse:
Atha kho māro pāpimā “jānāti maṁ samiddhi bhikkhū”ti dukkhī dummano tatthevantaradhāyīti. "  
Then Māra the Wicked, thinking, “The mendicant Samiddhi knows me!” miserable and sad, vanished right there. "

“Since I have such psychic power and might, what other ascetic or brahmin should I go to and attend upon?”
“Tayā ca kho, mārisa, mayā ca sveva bhagavā mahiddhikataro ceva mahānubhāvataro ca.  
“That Buddha has even more psychic power and might than you or me.

‘acchariyaṁ vata bho, abbhutaṁ vata bho, samaṇassa mahiddhikatā mahānubhāvatā’ti.  
‘Oh, how incredible, how amazing! The ascetic has such psychic power and might!’

Moggallāno mahiddhiko;  
comprehends with his mind,

Tevijjo iddhipattomhi,  
I am master of three knowledges, attained in psychic power,

sabbakāmasamiddhisu;  
whose every desire is granted!

“But knowing and seeing thus, do you wield the many kinds of psychic power? That is, multiplying yourselves and becoming one again; appearing and disappearing; going unimpeded through a wall, a rampart, or a mountain as if through space; diving in and out of the earth as if it were water; walking on water as if it were earth; flying cross-legged through the sky like a bird; touching and stroking with the hand the sun and moon, so mighty and powerful. Whenever I want, I wield the many kinds of psychic power: multiplying myself and becoming one again; appearing and disappearing; going unimpeded through a wall, a rampart, or a mountain as if through space; diving in and out of the earth as if it were water; walking on water as if it were earth; flying cross-legged through the sky like a bird; touching and stroking with the hand the sun and moon, so mighty and powerful. I control the body as far as the Brahmā realm.
Kassapopi, bhikkhave, yāvade ākaṅkhati anekavihitaṁ iddhividhaṁ paccanubhoti …pe… yāva brahmalokāpi kāyena vasaṁ vatteti.  
And so does Kassapa.

Atha kho maṁ, āvuso, bhagavā iddhiyā upasaṅkamitvā etadavoca:

‘mahesakkho vata bho satthā antarahito mahiddhiko mahānubhāvo.  
‘Alas, the illustrious Teacher, so mighty and powerful, has vanished!

Kiṁ nu kho āyasmā mahāmoggallāno bhagavantaṁ iddhiyā upasaṅkami;  
Did you go to him with your psychic power,
udāhu bhagavā āyasmantaṁ mahāmoggallānaṁ iddhiyā upasaṅkamī”ti?  
or did he come to you?”
“Na khvāhaṁ, āvuso, bhagavantaṁ iddhiyā upasaṅkamiṁ;  
“No reverend, I didn’t go to him with my psychic power,
napi maṁ bhagavā iddhiyā upasaṅkami.  
nor did he come to me.
Āyasmā hi mahāmoggallāno mahiddhiko mahānubhāvo ākaṅkhamāno kappaṁ tiṭṭheyyā”ti.  
Venerable Mahāmoggallāna is so mighty and powerful he could, if he wished, live on for the proper lifespan.”

“Eso kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu mahiddhiko mahānubhāvo, na ca sā samāpatti sulabharūpā yā tena bhikkhunā asamāpannapubbā.  
“That mendicant is very mighty and powerful. It’s not easy to find an attainment that he has not already attained.

That’s how powerful is the lion, king of beasts, among animals, how illustrious and mighty.

Evaṁ bhāvitesu kho, bhikkhu, catūsu iddhipādesu evaṁ bahulīkatesu, anekavihitaṁ iddhividhaṁ paccanubhoti—ekopi hutvā bahudhā hoti, bahudhāpi hutvā eko hoti; āvibhāvaṁ, tirobhāvaṁ; tirokuṭṭaṁ tiropākāraṁ tiropabbataṁ asajjamāno gacchati, seyyathāpi ākāse; pathaviyāpi ummujjanimujjaṁ karoti, seyyathāpi udake; udakepi abhijjamāne gacchati, seyyathāpi pathaviyaṁ; ākāsepi pallaṅkena kamati, seyyathāpi pakkhī sakuṇo; imepi candimasūriye evaṁmahiddhike evaṁmahānubhāve pāṇinā parimasati parimajjati; yāva brahmalokāpi kāyena vasaṁ vatteti.  
When the four bases of psychic power have been developed and cultivated in this way, they wield the many kinds of psychic power: multiplying themselves and becoming one again; appearing and disappearing; going unimpeded through a wall, a rampart, or a mountain as if through space; diving in and out of the earth as if it were water; walking on water as if it were earth; flying cross-legged through the sky like a bird; touching and stroking with the hand the sun and moon, so mighty and powerful; controlling the body as far as the Brahmā realm. abhijjamāne → abhijjamāno (pts1ed, mr) | parimasati → parāmasati (bj, sya-all, km) "

When the four bases of psychic power have been developed and cultivated in this way, they hear both kinds of sounds, human and divine, whether near or far.
Evaṁ bhāvitesu kho, bhikkhu, catūsu iddhipādesu evaṁ bahulīkatesu, parasattānaṁ parapuggalānaṁ cetasā ceto paricca pajānāti.  
When the four bases of psychic power have been developed and cultivated in this way, they understand the minds of other beings and individuals, having comprehended them with their own mind.
Evaṁ bhāvitesu kho, bhikkhu, catūsu iddhipādesu evaṁ bahulīkatesu, anekavihitaṁ pubbenivāsaṁ anussarati, seyyathidaṁ—ekampi jātiṁ dvepi jātiyo tissopi jātiyo catassopi jātiyo pañcapi jātiyo dasapi jātiyo vīsampi jātiyo tiṁsampi jātiyo cattālīsampi jātiyo paññāsampi jātiyo jātisatampi jātisahassampi jātisatasahassampi anekepi saṁvaṭṭakappe anekepi vivaṭṭakappe anekepi saṁvaṭṭavivaṭṭakappe: ‘amutrāsiṁ evaṁnāmo evaṅgotto evaṁvaṇṇo evamāhāro evaṁsukhadukkhappaṭisaṁvedī evamāyupariyanto, so tato cuto amutra udapādiṁ; tatrāpāsiṁ evaṁnāmo evaṅgotto evaṁvaṇṇo evamāhāro evaṁsukhadukkhappaṭisaṁvedī evamāyupariyanto, so tato cuto idhūpapanno’ti. Iti sākāraṁ sauddesaṁ anekavihitaṁ pubbenivāsaṁ anussarati.  
When the four bases of psychic power have been developed and cultivated in this way, they recollect many kinds of past lives. That is: one, two, three, four, five, ten, twenty, thirty, forty, fifty, a hundred, a thousand, a hundred thousand rebirths; many eons of the world contracting, many eons of the world expanding, many eons of the world contracting and expanding. They remember: ‘There, I was named this, my clan was that, I looked like this, and that was my food. This was how I felt pleasure and pain, and that was how my life ended. When I passed away from that place I was reborn somewhere else. There, too, I was named this, my clan was that, I looked like this, and that was my food. This was how I felt pleasure and pain, and that was how my life ended. When I passed away from that place I was reborn here.’ And so they recollect their many kinds of past lives, with features and details.
Evaṁ bhāvitesu kho, bhikkhu, catūsu iddhipādesu evaṁ bahulīkatesu, dibbena cakkhunā visuddhena atikkantamānusakena satte passati cavamāne upapajjamāne hīne paṇīte suvaṇṇe dubbaṇṇe, sugate duggate yathākammūpage satte pajānāti: ‘ime vata, bhonto, sattā kāyaduccaritena samannāgatā vacīduccaritena samannāgatā manoduccaritena samannāgatā ariyānaṁ upavādakā micchādiṭṭhikā micchādiṭṭhikammasamādānā; te kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā apāyaṁ duggatiṁ vinipātaṁ nirayaṁ upapannā. Ime vā pana, bhonto, sattā kāyasucaritena samannāgatā vacīsucaritena samannāgatā manosucaritena samannāgatā ariyānaṁ anupavādakā sammādiṭṭhikā sammādiṭṭhikammasamādānā; te kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā sugatiṁ saggaṁ lokaṁ upapannā’ti. Iti dibbena cakkhunā visuddhena atikkantamānusakena satte passati cavamāne upapajjamāne hīne paṇīte, suvaṇṇe dubbaṇṇe, sugate duggate yathākammūpage satte pajānāti.  
When the four bases of psychic power have been developed and cultivated in this way, with clairvoyance that is purified and superhuman, they see sentient beings passing away and being reborn—inferior and superior, beautiful and ugly, in a good place or a bad place. They understand how sentient beings are reborn according to their deeds. ‘These dear beings did bad things by way of body, speech, and mind. They spoke ill of the noble ones; they had wrong view; and they chose to act out of that wrong view. When their body breaks up, after death, they’re reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell. These dear beings, however, did good things by way of body, speech, and mind. They never spoke ill of the noble ones; they had right view; and they chose to act out of that right view. When their body breaks up, after death, they’re reborn in a good place, a heavenly realm.’ And so, with clairvoyance that is purified and superhuman, they see sentient beings passing away and being reborn—inferior and superior, beautiful and ugly, in a good place or a bad place.
