Kummaggappaṭipanno so,   you’re on the wrong path,  

Iti kho, bhikkhave, samādhi maggo, asamādhi kummaggo”ti.   And so, mendicants, immersion is the path. No immersion is the wrong path.”  

Ayonisomanasikāraṁ appahāya, kummaggasevanaṁ appahāya, cetaso līnattaṁ appahāya—  Irrational application of mind, following a wrong path, and mental sluggishness.  
Tayome, bhikkhave, dhamme appahāya abhabbo ayoniso manasikāraṁ pahātuṁ kummaggasevanaṁ pahātuṁ cetaso līnattaṁ pahātuṁ.  
Without giving up three things you can’t give up irrational application of mind, following a wrong path, and mental sluggishness.  
ime kho, bhikkhave, tayo dhamme appahāya abhabbo ayonisomanasikāraṁ pahātuṁ kummaggasevanaṁ pahātuṁ cetaso līnattaṁ pahātuṁ.  
Without giving up these three things you can’t give up irrational application of mind, following a wrong path, and mental sluggishness.  
So vikkhittacitto samāno abhabbo ayonisomanasikāraṁ pahātuṁ kummaggasevanaṁ pahātuṁ cetaso līnattaṁ pahātuṁ.  
When your mind is scattered you can’t give up irrational application of mind, following a wrong path, and mental sluggishness.  
Ayonisomanasikāraṁ pahāya, kummaggasevanaṁ pahāya, cetaso līnattaṁ pahāya— 
Irrational application of mind, following a wrong path, and mental sluggishness.  
Tayome, bhikkhave, dhamme pahāya bhabbo ayonisomanasikāraṁ pahātuṁ kummaggasevanaṁ pahātuṁ cetaso līnattaṁ pahātuṁ.  
After giving up three things you can give up irrational application of mind, following a wrong path, and mental sluggishness.

So avikkhittacitto samāno bhabbo ayonisomanasikāraṁ pahātuṁ kummaggasevanaṁ pahātuṁ cetaso līnattaṁ pahātuṁ.  
When your mind isn’t scattered you can give up irrational application of mind, following a wrong path, and mental sluggishness.  

So yvāssa maggo khemo sovatthiko pītigamanīyo taṁ maggaṁ pidaheyya, vivareyya kummaggaṁ, odaheyya okacaraṁ, ṭhapeyya okacārikaṁ.   They close off the safe, secure path that leads to happiness, and open the wrong path. There they plant domesticated male and female deer as decoys  
So yvāssa maggo khemo sovatthiko pītigamanīyo taṁ maggaṁ vivareyya, pidaheyya kummaggaṁ, ūhaneyya okacaraṁ, nāseyya okacārikaṁ.  
They open up the safe, secure path that leads to happiness, and close off the wrong path. They get rid of the decoys  
Kummaggoti kho, bhikkhave, aṭṭhaṅgikassetaṁ micchāmaggassa adhivacanaṁ, seyyathidaṁ— 
‘The wrong path’ is a term for the wrong eightfold path, that is,  
Iti kho, bhikkhave, vivaṭo mayā khemo maggo sovatthiko pītigamanīyo, pihito kummaggo, ūhato okacaro, nāsitā okacārikā.  
So, mendicants, I have opened up the safe, secure path to happiness and closed off the wrong path. And I have got rid of the male and female decoys.  

Abhikkhaṇanto sumedho satthaṁ ādāya addasa kummaṁ.   Taking up the sword and digging, the clever one saw a tortoise:  
‘ukkhipa kummaṁ;  
‘Throw out the tortoise!  
Ukkhipa kummaṁ, pajaha pañcupādānakkhandhe;  
‘Throw out the tortoise’ means ‘give up the five grasping aggregates’ …  

Kummasutta   A Turtle  
Bhūtapubbaṁ, bhikkhave, aññatarasmiṁ udakarahade mahākummakulaṁ ciranivāsi ahosi.  
Once upon a time in a certain lake there was a large family of turtles that had lived there for a long time.  
Atha kho, bhikkhave, aññataro kummo aññataraṁ kummaṁ etadavoca:  
Then one of the turtles said to another,  
‘mā kho tvaṁ, tāta kumma, etaṁ padesaṁ agamāsī’ti.  
‘My dear turtle, don’t you go to that place.’  
Addasā kho, bhikkhave, so kummo taṁ kummaṁ dūratova āgacchantaṁ.  
When the other turtle saw her coming off in the distance,  
Disvāna taṁ kummaṁ etadavoca:  
he said,  
‘kacci tvaṁ, tāta kumma, na taṁ padesaṁ agamāsī’ti?  
‘My dear turtle, I hope you didn’t go to that place!’  
‘Agamāsiṁ khvāhaṁ, tāta kumma, taṁ padesan’ti.  
‘I did.’  
‘Kacci panāsi, tāta kumma, akkhato anupahato’ti?  
‘But my dear turtle, I hope you’re not hurt or injured!’  
‘Akkhato khomhi, tāta kumma, anupahato, atthi ca me idaṁ suttakaṁ piṭṭhito piṭṭhito anubandhan’ti.  
‘I’m not hurt or injured. But this cord keeps dragging behind me.’  
‘Tagghasi, tāta kumma, khato, taggha upahato.  
‘Indeed, my dear turtle, you’re hurt and injured!  
Etena hi te, tāta kumma, suttakena pitaro ca pitāmahā ca anayaṁ āpannā byasanaṁ āpannā.  
Your father and grandfather met with tragedy and disaster because of such a cord.  
Gaccha dāni tvaṁ, tāta kumma, na dāni tvaṁ amhākan’ti.  
Go now, you are no longer one of us.’  

Dāruṇo baḷisaṁ kummaṁ,    

Siṅgālopi kho, bhikkhave, addasa kummaṁ kacchapaṁ dūratova gocarapasutaṁ.   But the jackal also saw the tortoise off in the distance grazing.  
Disvāna yena kummo kacchapo tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā kummaṁ kacchapaṁ paccupaṭṭhito ahosi:  
So it went up to the tortoise and waited nearby, thinking,  
Yadā kho, bhikkhave, kummo kacchapo soṇḍipañcamānaṁ aṅgānaṁ aññataraṁ vā aññataraṁ vā aṅgaṁ na abhininnāmi, atha siṅgālo kummamhā nibbijja pakkāmi, otāraṁ alabhamāno.  
But when that tortoise didn’t stick one or other of its limbs or neck out from its shell, the jackal left disappointed, since it couldn’t find a vulnerability.  
kummamhāva siṅgāloti.  
just like the jackal left the tortoise.  

Sabhayo ceso maggo sappaṭibhayo ca sakaṇṭako ca sagahano ca ummaggo ca kummaggo ca duhitiko ca.   ‘This path is dangerous and perilous, thorny and tangled; it’s a wrong turn, a bad path, a harmful way.
