Bhūtapubbaṁ, bhikkhave, sakko devānamindo deve tāvatiṁse anunayamāno tāyaṁ velāyaṁ imaṁ gāthaṁ abhāsi: Once upon a time, Sakka, lord of gods, guiding the gods of the Thirty-Three, recited this verse: Sakko hi, bhikkhave, devānamindo avītarāgo avītadoso avītamoho. Sakka, lord of gods, is not free of greed, hate, and delusion.
“Bhūtapubbaṁ, bhikkhave, sakko devānamindo deve tāvatiṁse anunayamāno tāyaṁ velāyaṁ imaṁ gāthaṁ abhāsi: “Once upon a time, mendicants, Sakka, lord of gods, guiding the gods of the Thirty-Three, recited this verse: Sakko hi, bhikkhave, devānamindo aparimutto jātiyā jarāya maraṇena sokehi paridevehi dukkhehi domanassehi upāyāsehi, aparimutto dukkhasmāti vadāmi. Because Sakka, lord of gods, is not exempt from rebirth, old age, and death, from sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress. He is not exempt from suffering, I say.
Atha kho, brāhmaṇa dhammika, rājā korabyo yena sakko devānamindo tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā sakkaṁ devānamindaṁ etadavoca: Then King Koravya went up to Sakka, lord of gods, and said to him, Atha kho, brāhmaṇa dhammika, sakko devānamindo tathārūpaṁ iddhābhisaṅkhāraṁ abhisaṅkhāsi, yathā bhusā vātavuṭṭhi āgantvā suppatiṭṭhaṁ nigrodharājaṁ pavattesi ummūlamakāsi. Then Sakka used his psychic powers to will that a violent storm come. And it felled and uprooted the royal banyan tree. abhisaṅkhāsi → abhisaṅkhāresi (sya-all, mr) | pavattesi → pātesi (bj, pts1ed) Atha kho, brāhmaṇa dhammika, sakko devānamindo yena suppatiṭṭhe nigrodharāje adhivatthā devatā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā suppatiṭṭhe nigrodharāje adhivatthaṁ devataṁ etadavoca: Then Sakka went up to that deity, and said, Atha kho, brāhmaṇa dhammika, sakko devānamindo tathārūpaṁ iddhābhisaṅkhāraṁ abhisaṅkhāsi, yathā bhusā vātavuṭṭhi āgantvā suppatiṭṭhaṁ nigrodharājaṁ ussāpesi, sacchavīni mūlāni ahesuṁ. Then Sakka used his psychic power to will that a violent storm come. And it raised up that mighty banyan tree and the bark of the roots was healed. abhisaṅkhāsi → abhisaṅkhāri (sya-all, mr)
Atha kho vessavaṇo mahārājā yena sakko devānamindo tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā sakkaṁ devānamindaṁ etadavoca: Then he went up to Sakka, lord of gods, and said to him: Atha kho sakko devānamindo seyyathāpi nāma balavā puriso samiñjitaṁ vā bāhaṁ pasāreyya, pasāritaṁ vā bāhaṁ samiñjeyya; evamevaṁ devesu tāvatiṁsesu antarahito mahisavatthusmiṁ saṅkheyyake pabbate vaṭajālikāyaṁ āyasmato uttarassa sammukhe pāturahosi. Then, as easily as a strong person would extend or contract their arm, Sakka vanished from the gods of the Thirty-Three and reappeared on Saṅkheyyaka Mountain in front of Venerable Uttara. Atha kho sakko devānamindo yenāyasmā uttaro tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā āyasmantaṁ uttaraṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ aṭṭhāsi. Ekamantaṁ ṭhito kho sakko devānamindo āyasmantaṁ uttaraṁ etadavoca: Then Sakka went up to Venerable Uttara, bowed, stood to one side, and said to him:
Tatra, bhikkhave, sakko devānamindo dānamayaṁ puññakiriyavatthuṁ atirekaṁ karitvā sīlamayaṁ puññakiriyavatthuṁ atirekaṁ karitvā tāvatiṁse deve dasahi ṭhānehi adhigaṇhāti— There, Sakka, lord of gods, has practiced giving and ethical conduct as grounds for making merit to a greater degree than the other gods. So he surpasses them in ten respects …
Parinibbute bhagavati saha parinibbānā sakko devānamindo imaṁ gāthaṁ abhāsi: When the Buddha became fully extinguished, Sakka, lord of gods, recited this verse:
Atha kho, ānanda, sakko devānamindo rañño mahāsudassanassa cetasā cetoparivitakkamaññāya vissakammaṁ devaputtaṁ āmantesi: And then Sakka, lord of gods, knowing what the king was thinking, addressed the god Vissakamma, vissakammaṁ → visukammaṁ (mr)
Atha kho, bhante, sakko devānamindo devānaṁ tāvatiṁsānaṁ sampasādaṁ viditvā imāhi gāthāhi anumodi: Seeing the joy of those gods, Sakka, lord of gods, celebrated with these verses: Atha kho, bhante, sakko devānamindo deve tāvatiṁse āmantesi: Then Sakka, lord of gods, addressed the gods of the Thirty-Three,
Atha kho, bhante, sakko devānamindo devānaṁ tāvatiṁsānaṁ sampasādaṁ viditvā imāhi gāthāhi anumodi: Seeing the joy of those gods, Sakka, lord of gods, celebrated with these verses: Atha kho, bhante, sakko devānamindo devānaṁ tāvatiṁsānaṁ sampasādaṁ viditvā deve tāvatiṁse āmantesi: Seeing the joy of those gods, Sakka, lord of gods, addressed them, Atha kho, bhante, sakko devānamindo devānaṁ tāvatiṁsānaṁ bhagavato aṭṭha yathābhucce vaṇṇe payirudāhāsi: Then Sakka proffered these eight genuine praises of the Buddha: Ime kho, bhante, sakko devānamindo devānaṁ tāvatiṁsānaṁ bhagavato aṭṭha yathābhucce vaṇṇe payirudāhāsi. These are the eight genuine praises of the Buddha proffered by Sakka. Evaṁ vutte, bhante, sakko devānamindo deve tāvatiṁse etadavoca: When they said this, Sakka said, Atha kho, bhante, sakko devānamindo deve tāvatiṁse āmantesi: Then Sakka, lord of gods, addressed the gods of the Thirty-Three, ‘Evaṁ, mahābrahme’ti kho, bhante, sakko devānamindo brahmuno sanaṅkumārassa bhagavato aṭṭha yathābhucce vaṇṇe payirudāhāsi. Saying, ‘Yes, Great Brahmā,’ Sakka repeated the eight genuine praises for him. Ime kho, bhante, sakko devānamindo brahmuno sanaṅkumārassa bhagavato aṭṭha yathābhucce vaṇṇe payirudāhāsi. dn19
Addasā kho sakko devānamindo bhagavantaṁ magadhesu viharantaṁ pācīnato rājagahassa ambasaṇḍā nāma brāhmaṇagāmo, tassuttarato vediyake pabbate indasālaguhāyaṁ. Seeing that the Buddha was at Indra’s hill cave, Atha kho sakko devānamindo pañcasikhaṁ gandhabbadevaputtaṁ āmantesi: Then Sakka addressed the centaur Pañcasikha, Atha kho sakko devānamindo devehi tāvatiṁsehi parivuto pañcasikhena gandhabbadevaputtena purakkhato— Then Sakka went at the head of a retinue consisting of the gods of the Thirty-Three and the centaur Pañcasikha. Atha kho sakko devānamindo pañcasikhaṁ gandhabbadevaputtaṁ āmantesi: Then Sakka addressed the centaur Pañcasikha, Atha kho sakko devānamindo pañcasikhaṁ gandhabbadevaputtaṁ āmantesi: So he addressed Pañcasikha, ‘sakko, bhante, devānamindo sāmacco saparijano bhagavato pāde sirasā vandatī’”ti. ‘Sir, Sakka, lord of gods, with his ministers and retinue, bows with his head at your feet.’” “sakko, bhante, devānamindo sāmacco saparijano bhagavato pāde sirasā vandatī”ti. “Sir, Sakka, lord of gods, with his ministers and retinue, bows with his head at your feet.” “Evaṁ sukhī hotu, pañcasikha, sakko devānamindo sāmacco saparijano; “So may Sakka with his ministers and retinue be happy, Pañcasikha,” said the Buddha, Abhivadito sakko devānamindo bhagavato indasālaguhaṁ pavisitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ aṭṭhāsi. And being saluted by the Buddha, Sakka entered Indra’s hill cave, bowed to the Buddha, and stood to one side. “sakko, bhante, devānamindo sāmacco saparijano bhagavato pāde sirasā vandatī”’ti. “Sir, Sakka, lord of gods, with his ministers and retinue, bows with his head at your feet.”’ “sakko, bhante, devānamindo sāmacco saparijano bhagavato pāde sirasā vandatī”’ti. dn21 Katāvakāso sakko devānamindo bhagavatā imaṁ bhagavantaṁ paṭhamaṁ pañhaṁ apucchi: Having been granted an opportunity by the Buddha, Sakka asked the first question. devānamindo bhagavatā imaṁ bhagavantaṁ → devānamindo bhagavantaṁ imaṁ (pts1ed) Itthaṁ sakko devānamindo bhagavantaṁ pañhaṁ apucchi. Such was Sakka’s question to the Buddha. bhagavantaṁ pañhaṁ → imaṁ paṭhamaṁ pañhaṁ (pts1ed) Attamano sakko devānamindo bhagavato bhāsitaṁ abhinandi anumodi: Delighted, Sakka approved and agreed with what the Buddha said, saying, Itiha sakko devānamindo bhagavato bhāsitaṁ abhinanditvā anumoditvā bhagavantaṁ uttari pañhaṁ apucchi: And then, having approved and agreed with what the Buddha said, Sakka asked another question: uttari → uttariṁ (bj, sya-all, km, pts1ed) Attamano sakko devānamindo bhagavato bhāsitaṁ abhinandi anumodi: Delighted, Sakka approved and agreed with what the Buddha said, saying, Itiha sakko devānamindo bhagavato bhāsitaṁ abhinanditvā anumoditvā bhagavantaṁ uttari pañhaṁ apucchi: And then Sakka asked another question: Attamano sakko devānamindo bhagavato bhāsitaṁ abhinandi anumodi: Delighted, Sakka approved and agreed with what the Buddha said, saying, Itiha sakko devānamindo bhagavato bhāsitaṁ abhinanditvā anumoditvā bhagavantaṁ uttari pañhaṁ apucchi: And then Sakka asked another question: Evaṁ vutte, sakko devānamindo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: When the Buddha said this, Sakka said to him: Itiha sakko devānamindo bhagavato bhāsitaṁ abhinanditvā anumoditvā bhagavantaṁ uttari pañhaṁ apucchi: And then Sakka asked another question: Attamano sakko devānamindo bhagavato bhāsitaṁ abhinandi anumodi: Delighted, Sakka approved and agreed with what the Buddha said, saying, Itiha sakko devānamindo bhagavato bhāsitaṁ abhinanditvā anumoditvā bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: And then Sakka, having approved and agreed with what the Buddha said, said to him, “Abhijānāsi no tvaṁ, devānaminda, ime pañhe aññe samaṇabrāhmaṇe pucchitā”ti? “Lord of gods, do you recall having asked this question of other ascetics and brahmins?” devānaminda → devānamindo (pts1ed) ‘ahaṁ kho, mārisa, sakko devānamindo’ti. ‘Dear sir, I am Sakka, lord of gods.’ ‘sakko ca no devānamindo diṭṭho, yañca no apucchimhā, tañca no byākāsī’ti. ‘We have seen Sakka, lord of gods! And he answered our questions!’ Atha kho sakko devānamindo pañcasikhaṁ gandhabbaputtaṁ āmantesi: Then Sakka addressed the centaur Pañcasikha, Atha kho sakko devānamindo pāṇinā pathaviṁ parāmasitvā tikkhattuṁ udānaṁ udānesi: Then Sakka, touching the ground with his hand, expressed this heartfelt sentiment three times:
Tena kho pana samayena sakko devānamindo āyasmato mahākassapassa piṇḍapātaṁ dātukāmo hoti. Now at that time Sakka, lord of Gods, wished to give alms to Mahākassapa. Addasā kho sakko devānamindo āyasmantaṁ mahākassapaṁ dūratova āgacchantaṁ. Seeing Mahākassapa coming off in the distance, “sakko kho ayaṁ devānamindo”ti. “This is Sakka, lord of Gods.” Atha kho sakko devānamindo āyasmantaṁ mahākassapaṁ abhivādetvā padakkhiṇaṁ katvā vehāsaṁ abbhuggantvā ākāse antalikkhe tikkhattuṁ udānaṁ udānesi: Then Sakka bowed and respectfully circled Mahākassapa, keeping him on his right. Then he rose into the air and, sitting cross-legged in the sky, expressed this heartfelt sentiment three times:
Atha kho sakko devānamindo yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ aṭṭhāsi. Ekamantaṁ ṭhito kho sakko devānamindo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: And then Sakka, lord of gods, went up to the Buddha, bowed, stood to one side, and said to him: Atha kho sakko devānamindo bhagavato bhāsitaṁ abhinanditvā anumoditvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā padakkhiṇaṁ katvā tatthevantaradhāyi. Then Sakka, lord of gods, having approved and agreed with what the Buddha said, bowed and respectfully circled the Buddha, keeping him on his right, before vanishing right there. Tena kho pana samayena sakko devānamindo ekapuṇḍarīke uyyāne dibbehi pañcahi tūriyasatehi samappito samaṅgībhūto paricāreti. Now at that time Sakka was amusing himself in the Single Lotus Park, supplied and provided with a divine orchestra. tūriyasatehi → turiyasatehi (bj, sya-all, km, pts1ed) Addasā kho sakko devānamindo āyasmantaṁ mahāmoggallānaṁ dūratova āgacchantaṁ. Seeing Mahāmoggallāna coming off in the distance, Sakkopi kho devānamindo aññataraṁ nīcaṁ āsanaṁ gahetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. while Sakka took a low seat and sat to one side. Atha kho sakko ca devānamindo vessavaṇo ca mahārājā āyasmantaṁ mahāmoggallānaṁ purakkhatvā yena vejayanto pāsādo tenupasaṅkamiṁsu. Then, putting Venerable Mahāmoggallāna in front, Sakka, lord of gods, and Vessavaṇa, the Great King, went to the Palace of Victory. Atha kho sakko ca devānamindo vessavaṇo ca mahārājā āyasmantaṁ mahāmoggallānaṁ vejayante pāsāde anucaṅkamāpenti anuvicarāpenti: Then Sakka and Vessavaṇa encouraged Moggallāna to wander and explore the palace, saying, Atha kho sakko ca devānamindo, vessavaṇo ca mahārājā, devā ca tāvatiṁsā acchariyabbhutacittajātā ahesuṁ: Then Sakka, Vessavaṇa, and the Gods of the Thirty-Three, their minds full of wonder and amazement, thought, “Abhijānāmahaṁ, moggallāna, idha sakko devānamindo yenāhaṁ tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā maṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ aṭṭhāsi. Ekamantaṁ ṭhito kho, moggallāna, sakko devānamindo maṁ etadavoca: “I do, Moggallāna.” And the Buddha retold all that happened when Sakka came to visit him, adding:
Atha kho, ānanda, sakko devānamindo deve tāvatiṁse āmantesi: Then Sakka, lord of gods, addressed the gods of the Thirty-Three, Atha kho, ānanda, sakko devānamindo—seyyathāpi nāma balavā puriso samiñjitaṁ vā bāhaṁ pasāreyya, pasāritaṁ vā bāhaṁ samiñjeyya; evameva—devesu tāvatiṁsesu antarahito nimissa rañño pamukhe pāturahosi. Then, as easily as a strong person would extend or contract their arm, Sakka vanished from the Thirty-Three gods and reappeared in front of King Nimi. Atha kho, ānanda, sakko devānamindo nimiṁ rājānaṁ etadavoca: He said to the king, Atha kho, ānanda, sakko devānamindo nimissa rañño adhivāsanaṁ viditvā—seyyathāpi nāma balavā puriso samiñjitaṁ vā bāhaṁ pasāreyya, pasāritaṁ vā bāhaṁ samiñjeyya; evameva—nimissa rañño pamukhe antarahito devesu tāvatiṁsesu pāturahosi. Then, knowing that the king had consented, as easily as a strong person would extend or contract their arm, Sakka vanished from King Nimi and reappeared among the Thirty-Three gods. Atha kho, ānanda, sakko devānamindo mātaliṁ saṅgāhakaṁ āmantesi: Then Sakka, lord of gods, addressed his charioteer Mātali, Addasā kho, ānanda, sakko devānamindo nimiṁ rājānaṁ dūratova āgacchantaṁ. Sakka saw King Nimi coming off in the distance, Atha kho, ānanda, sakko devānamindo mātaliṁ saṅgāhakaṁ āmantesi: Then Sakka, lord of gods, addressed his charioteer Mātali,

Atha kho, bhikkhave, sakko devānamindo suvīraṁ devaputtaṁ āmantesi: Then Sakka, lord of gods, addressed the god Suvīra, Dutiyampi kho, bhikkhave, sakko devānamindo suvīraṁ devaputtaṁ āmantesi: For a second time Sakka addressed Suvīra, Tatiyampi kho, bhikkhave, sakko devānamindo suvīraṁ devaputtaṁ āmantesi: For a third time Sakka addressed Suvīra, Atha kho, bhikkhave, sakko devānamindo suvīraṁ devaputtaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi: Then Sakka addressed the god Suvīra in verse: So hi nāma, bhikkhave, sakko devānamindo sakaṁ puññaphalaṁ upajīvamāno devānaṁ tāvatiṁsānaṁ issariyādhipaccaṁ rajjaṁ kārento uṭṭhānavīriyassa vaṇṇavādī bhavissati. So, mendicants, even Sakka, lord of gods—while living off of the fruit of his good and bad deeds, and ruling as sovereign lord over these gods of the Thirty-Three—will speak in praise of initiative and energy.
Atha kho, bhikkhave, sakko devānamindo susīmaṁ devaputtaṁ āmantesi: Then Sakka, lord of gods, addressed the god Susīma, susīmaṁ → susimaṁ (sya-all, km, mr) " Dutiyampi kho, bhikkhave, sakko devānamindo susīmaṁ devaputtaṁ āmantesi …pe… For a second time … Tatiyampi kho, bhikkhave, sakko devānamindo susīmaṁ devaputtaṁ āmantesi …pe… For a third time … Atha kho, bhikkhave, sakko devānamindo susīmaṁ devaputtaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi: Then Sakka addressed the god Susīma in verse: So hi nāma, bhikkhave, sakko devānamindo sakaṁ puññaphalaṁ upajīvamāno devānaṁ tāvatiṁsānaṁ issariyādhipaccaṁ rajjaṁ kārento uṭṭhānavīriyassa vaṇṇavādī bhavissati. So, mendicants, even Sakka, lord of gods—while living off of the fruit of his good and bad deeds, and ruling as sovereign lord over these gods of the Thirty-Three—will speak in praise of initiative and energy.
Atha kho, bhikkhave, sakko devānamindo deve tāvatiṁse āmantesi: Then Sakka, lord of gods, addressed the gods of the Thirty-Three: Sakko hi, bhikkhave, devānamindo avītarāgo avītadoso avītamoho bhīru chambhī utrāsī palāyīti. Because Sakka is not free of greed, hate, and delusion. He is fearful, scared, nervous, quick to flee.
Sakkopi kho, bhikkhave, devānamindo deve tāvatiṁse āmantesi: Meanwhile, Sakka, lord of gods, addressed the gods of the Thirty-Three, So hi nāma, bhikkhave, sakko devānamindo sakaṁ puññaphalaṁ upajīvamāno devānaṁ tāvatiṁsānaṁ issariyādhipaccaṁ rajjaṁ kārento khantisoraccassa vaṇṇavādī bhavissati. So, mendicants, even Sakka, lord of gods—while living off of the fruit of his good and bad deeds, and ruling as sovereign lord over these gods of the Thirty-Three—will speak in praise of patience and gentleness.
Evaṁ vutte, bhikkhave, sakko devānamindo vepacittiṁ asurindaṁ etadavoca: When he said this, Sakka said to him, Evaṁ vutte, bhikkhave, sakko devānamindo imaṁ gāthaṁ abhāsi: So Sakka recited this verse: Atha kho, bhikkhave, sakko devānamindo vepacittiṁ asurindaṁ etadavoca: Then Sakka said to Vepacitti, Evaṁ vutte, bhikkhave, sakko devānamindo imā gāthāyo abhāsi: So Sakka recited this verse:
Atha kho, bhikkhave, vepacitti asurindo sakkassa devānamindassa cetasā cetoparivitakkamaññāya yena sakko devānamindo tenupasaṅkami. And then Vepacitti, lord of titans, knowing what Sakka was thinking, approached him. Addasā kho, bhikkhave, sakko devānamindo vepacittiṁ asurindaṁ dūratova āgacchantaṁ. Sakka saw Vepacitti coming off in the distance,
Atha kho sakko ca devānamindo verocano ca asurindo yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṁsu; upasaṅkamitvā paccekaṁ dvārabāhaṁ nissāya aṭṭhaṁsu. Then Sakka, lord of gods, and Verocana, lord of titans, approached the Buddha and stationed themselves one by each door-post.
Atha kho, bhikkhave, sakko ca devānamindo vepacitti ca asurindo yena te isayo sīlavanto kalyāṇadhammā tenupasaṅkamiṁsu. Then Sakka, lord of gods, and Vepacitti, lord of titans, went to those seers. Atha kho, bhikkhave, sakko devānamindo paṭaliyo upāhanā orohitvā khaggaṁ aññesaṁ datvā chattaṁ apanāmetvā dvāreneva assamaṁ pavisitvā te isayo sīlavante kalyāṇadhamme anuvātaṁ pañjaliko namassamāno aṭṭhāsi. Sakka took off his boots, gave his sword to others, and, putting down his sunshade, entered the hermitage through a gate he happened upon. He stood downwind of those seers, revering them with joined palms.
“sakko, bhikkhave, devānamindo pubbe manussabhūto samāno magho nāma māṇavo ahosi, tasmā maghavāti vuccati. “Mendicants, in a former life, when Sakka was a human being, he was a brahmanical student named Magha. That’s why he’s called Maghavā. Sakko, bhikkhave, devānamindo pubbe manussabhūto samāno pure dānaṁ adāsi, tasmā purindadoti vuccati. In a former life, when Sakka was a human being, he gave gifts in stronghold after stronghold. That’s why he’s called Purindada, the Stronghold-Giver. samāno pure → pure pure (bj, pts1ed, pts2ed) " Sakko, bhikkhave, devānamindo pubbe manussabhūto samāno sakkaccaṁ dānaṁ adāsi, tasmā sakkoti vuccati. In a former life, when Sakka was a human being, he gave gifts carefully. That’s why he’s called Sakka, the Careful. Sakko, bhikkhave, devānamindo pubbe manussabhūto samāno āvasathaṁ adāsi, tasmā vāsavoti vuccati. In a former life, when Sakka was a human being, he gave the gift of a guest house. That’s why he’s called Vāsava, the Houser. Sakko, bhikkhave, devānamindo sahassampi atthānaṁ muhuttena cinteti, tasmā sahassakkhoti vuccati. Sakka thinks of a thousand things in a moment. That’s why he’s called Sahassakkha, the Thousand-Eye. Sakko, bhikkhave, devānamindo devānaṁ tāvatiṁsānaṁ issariyādhipaccaṁ rajjaṁ kāreti, tasmā devānamindoti vuccati. Sakka rules as sovereign lord over the gods of the Thirty-Three. That’s why he’s called lord of gods.
“Diṭṭho kho, bhante, bhagavatā sakko devānamindo”ti? “Sir, have you seen Sakka, lord of gods?” “Diṭṭho kho me, mahāli, sakko devānamindo”ti. “I have, Mahāli.” Duddaso hi, bhante, sakko devānamindo”ti. For Sakka is hard to see.” Sakko, mahāli, devānamindo pubbe manussabhūto samāno magho nāma māṇavo ahosi, tasmā maghavāti vuccati. In a former life, when Sakka was a human being, he was a brahmanical student named Magha. That’s why he’s called Maghavā. Sakko, mahāli, devānamindo pubbe manussabhūto samāno sakkaccaṁ dānaṁ adāsi, tasmā sakkoti vuccati. In a former life, when Sakka was a human being, he gave gifts carefully. That’s why he’s called Sakka, the careful. Sakko, mahāli, devānamindo pubbe manussabhūto samāno pure dānaṁ adāsi, tasmā purindadoti vuccati. In a former life, when Sakka was a human being, he gave gifts in stronghold after stronghold. That’s why he’s called Purindada, the stronghold-giver. Sakko, mahāli, devānamindo pubbe manussabhūto samāno āvasathaṁ adāsi, tasmā vāsavoti vuccati. In a former life, when Sakka was a human being, he gave the gift of a guest house. That’s why he’s called Vāsava, the houser. Sakko, mahāli, devānamindo sahassampi atthānaṁ muhuttena cinteti, tasmā sahassakkhoti vuccati. Sakka thinks of a thousand things in a moment. That’s why he’s called Sahassakkha, Thousand-Eye. Sakko, mahāli, devānamindo devānaṁ tāvatiṁsānaṁ issariyādhipaccaṁ rajjaṁ kāreti, tasmā devānamindoti vuccati. Sakka rules as sovereign lord over the gods of the Thirty-Three. That’s why he’s called Devānaminda, lord of gods.
Atha kho, bhikkhave, sakko devānamindo deve tāvatiṁse āmantesi: Then Sakka, lord of gods, addressed the gods of the Thirty-Three, Atha kho, bhikkhave, sakko devānamindo deve tāvatiṁse anunayamāno tāyaṁ velāyaṁ imā gāthāyo abhāsi: Then Sakka, lord of gods, guiding the gods of the Thirty-Three, recited this verse:
Atha kho sakko devānamindo yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ aṭṭhāsi. Ekamantaṁ ṭhito kho sakko devānamindo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: And then Sakka, lord of gods, went up to the Buddha, bowed, stood to one side, and said to him,
Atha kho sakko devānamindo yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ aṭṭhāsi. And then Sakka, lord of gods, went up to the Buddha, bowed, stood to one side, Ekamantaṁ ṭhito kho sakko devānamindo bhagavantaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi: and addressed him in verse:
Atha kho sakko ca devānamindo brahmā ca sahampati yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṁsu; upasaṅkamitvā paccekaṁ dvārabāhaṁ nissāya aṭṭhaṁsu. Then Sakka, lord of gods, and Brahmā Sahampati approached the Buddha and stationed themselves one by each door-post. Atha kho sakko devānamindo bhagavato santike imaṁ gāthaṁ abhāsi: Then Sakka recited this verse in the Buddha’s presence:
“bhūtapubbaṁ, bhikkhave, sakko devānamindo mātaliṁ saṅgāhakaṁ āmantesi: “Once upon a time, mendicants, Sakka, lord of gods, addressed his charioteer Mātali, Atha kho, bhikkhave, sakko devānamindo vejayantapāsādā orohanto añjaliṁ katvā sudaṁ puthuddisā namassati. Then Sakka descended from the Palace of Victory, raised his joined palms, and revered the different quarters. añjaliṁ katvā → pañjaliko (bj, pts1ed); pañjaliṁ katvā (mr) "

Atha kho, bhikkhave, devā tāvatiṁsā yena sakko devānamindo tenupasaṅkamiṁsu; upasaṅkamitvā sakkaṁ devānamindaṁ etadavocuṁ: So the gods went up to Sakka and told him what had happened, adding, Atha kho, bhikkhave, sakko devānamindo yena so kodhabhakkho yakkho tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā ekaṁsaṁ uttarāsaṅgaṁ karitvā dakkhiṇajāṇumaṇḍalaṁ pathaviyaṁ nihantvā yena so kodhabhakkho yakkho tenañjaliṁ paṇāmetvā tikkhattuṁ nāmaṁ sāveti: Then Sakka went up to that spirit, arranged his robe over one shoulder, knelt with his right knee on the ground, raised his joined palms toward the anger-eating spirit, and pronounced his name three times: ‘sakkohaṁ, mārisa, devānamindo, sakkohaṁ, mārisa, devānamindo’ti. ‘Good sir, I am Sakka, lord of gods! Good sir, I am Sakka, the lord of gods!’ Yathā yathā kho, bhikkhave, sakko devānamindo nāmaṁ sāvesi tathā tathā so yakkho dubbaṇṇataro ceva ahosi okoṭimakataro ca. But the more Sakka pronounced his name, the uglier and more deformed the spirit became, Atha kho, bhikkhave, sakko devānamindo sake āsane nisīditvā deve tāvatiṁse anunayamāno tāyaṁ velāyaṁ imā gāthāyo abhāsi: Then Sakka, lord of gods, guiding the gods of the Thirty-Three, recited this verse:

Ekamantaṁ ṭhitaṁ kho sakkaṁ devānamindaṁ āyasmā mahāmoggallāno etadavoca: Then Sakka, lord of gods, with five hundred deities came up to Mahāmoggallāna, bowed, and stood to one side.
