Mahantasmiṁ kho pana lokasannivāse santi samaṇabrāhmaṇā iddhimanto dibbacakkhukā paracittaviduno.   and there are ascetics and brahmins who have psychic power—they’re clairvoyant, and can read the minds of others.  
devatāpi kho santi iddhimantiniyo dibbacakkhukā paracittaviduniyo.  
And there are deities, too, who have psychic power—they’re clairvoyant, and can read the minds of others.  

‘pubbe sudaṁ appatarā ceva bhikkhū ahesuṁ bahutarā ca uttari manussadhammā iddhipāṭihāriyaṁ dassesuṁ;   ‘Formerly, it seems, there were fewer mendicants, but more of them displayed superhuman demonstrations of psychic power;  
etarahi pana bahutarā ceva bhikkhū appatarā ca uttari manussadhammā iddhipāṭihāriyaṁ dassentī’ti.  
while these days, there are more mendicants, but fewer display superhuman demonstrations of psychic power.’

A demonstration of psychic power, a demonstration of revealing, and a demonstration of instruction.  
Katamañca, brāhmaṇa, iddhipāṭihāriyaṁ?  
And what is the demonstration of psychic power?  
Idha, brāhmaṇa, ekacco anekavihitaṁ iddhividhaṁ paccanubhoti: ‘ekopi hutvā bahudhā hoti, bahudhāpi hutvā eko hoti; āvibhāvaṁ, tirobhāvaṁ; tirokuṭṭaṁ tiropākāraṁ tiropabbataṁ asajjamāno gacchati, seyyathāpi ākāse; pathaviyāpi ummujjanimujjaṁ karoti, seyyathāpi udake; udakepi abhijjamāne gacchati, seyyathāpi pathaviyaṁ; ākāsepi pallaṅkena kamati, seyyathāpi pakkhī sakuṇo; imepi candimasūriye evaṁmahiddhike evaṁmahānubhāve pāṇinā parimasati parimajjati, yāva brahmalokāpi kāyena vasaṁ vatteti’.  
It’s when someone wields the many kinds of psychic power: multiplying themselves and becoming one again; appearing and disappearing; going unimpeded through a wall, a rampart, or a mountain as if through space; diving in and out of the earth as if it were water; walking on water as if it were earth; flying cross-legged through the sky like a bird; touching and stroking with the hand the sun and moon, so mighty and powerful. They control the body as far as the Brahmā realm.

For Master Gotama wields the many kinds of psychic power … controlling the body as far as the Brahmā realm.  
Ahañhi, brāhmaṇa, anekavihitaṁ iddhividhaṁ paccanubhomi …pe… yāva brahmalokāpi kāyena vasaṁ vattemi.  
For I do wield the many kinds of psychic power … controlling the body as far as the Brahmā realm.

api ca kho bhikkhu iddhimā cetovasippatto devaparisāyaṁ dhammaṁ deseti.   However, a mendicant with psychic powers, who has achieved mastery of the mind, teaches Dhamma to the assembly of gods.

Atthi, āvuso, amumhi dārukkhandhe pathavīdhātu, yaṁ nissāya bhikkhu iddhimā cetovasippatto amuṁ dārukkhandhaṁ pathavītveva adhimucceyya.  
Because the earth element exists in the tree trunk. Relying on that a mendicant with psychic powers could determine it to be nothing but earth.  
Ākaṅkhamāno, āvuso, bhikkhu iddhimā cetovasippatto amuṁ dārukkhandhaṁ āpotveva adhimucceyya …pe…  
If they wanted to, a mendicant with psychic powers who has mastered their mind could determine this tree trunk to be nothing but water. …  
Atthi, āvuso, amumhi dārukkhandhe asubhadhātu, yaṁ nissāya bhikkhu iddhimā cetovasippatto amuṁ dārukkhandhaṁ asubhantveva adhimucceyyā”ti.  
Because the element of ugliness exists in the tree trunk. Relying on that a mendicant with psychic powers could determine it to be nothing but ugly.” 

Atha kho, brāhmaṇa dhammika, sakko devānamindo tathārūpaṁ iddhābhisaṅkhāraṁ abhisaṅkhāsi, yathā bhusā vātavuṭṭhi āgantvā suppatiṭṭhaṁ nigrodharājaṁ pavattesi ummūlamakāsi.   Then Sakka used his psychic powers to will that a violent storm come. And it felled and uprooted the royal banyan tree.

They control the body as far as the Brahmā realm.

Furthermore, there is an ascetic or brahmin with psychic power who has achieved mastery of the mind, or a god who is mighty and powerful. They’ve developed a limited perception of earth and a limitless perception of water. They make the earth shake and rock and tremble.  

So sace ākaṅkhati: ‘anekavihitaṁ iddhividhaṁ paccanubhaveyyaṁ—ekopi hutvā bahudhā assaṁ, bahudhāpi hutvā eko assaṁ …pe… yāva brahmalokāpi kāyena vasaṁ vatteyyan’ti,   They might wish: ‘May I wield the many kinds of psychic power: multiplying myself and becoming one again … controlling my body as far as the Brahmā realm.’

Anekavihitaṁ iddhividhaṁ paccanubhoti—ekopi hutvā bahudhā hoti; bahudhāpi hutvā eko hoti; āvibhāvaṁ, tirobhāvaṁ; tirokuṭṭaṁ tiropākāraṁ tiropabbataṁ asajjamāno gacchati, seyyathāpi ākāse; pathaviyāpi ummujjanimujjaṁ karoti, seyyathāpi udake; udakepi abhijjamāne gacchati, seyyathāpi pathaviyaṁ; ākāsepi pallaṅkena kamati, seyyathāpi pakkhī sakuṇo; imepi candimasūriye evaṁmahiddhike evaṁmahānubhāve pāṇinā parāmasati parimajjati, yāva brahmalokāpi kāyena vasaṁ vatteti.   They wield the many kinds of psychic power: multiplying themselves and becoming one again; appearing and disappearing; going unimpeded through a wall, a rampart, or a mountain as if through space; diving in and out of the earth as if it were water; walking on water as if it were earth; flying cross-legged through the sky like a bird; touching and stroking with the hand the sun and moon, so mighty and powerful. They control the body as far as the Brahmā realm.

Iddhipāṭihāriyena, ādesanāpāṭihāriyena, anusāsanīpāṭihāriyena—  A demonstration of psychic power, a demonstration of revealing, and a demonstration of instruction.

So evaṁ samāhite citte parisuddhe pariyodāte anaṅgaṇe vigatūpakkilese mudubhūte kammaniye ṭhite āneñjappatte iddhividhāya cittaṁ abhinīharati abhininnāmeti.  
When their mind has become immersed in samādhi like this—purified, bright, flawless, rid of corruptions, pliable, workable, steady, and imperturbable—they project it and extend it toward psychic power.

Then the Buddha used his psychic power to will that Pokkharasādi would see his private parts covered in a foreskin.

Sādhu, bhante, bhagavā ekaṁ bhikkhuṁ samādisatu, yo uttari manussadhammā iddhipāṭihāriyaṁ karissati;   Please direct a mendicant to perform a superhuman demonstration of psychic power.  
‘etha tumhe, bhikkhave, gihīnaṁ odātavasanānaṁ uttari manussadhammā iddhipāṭihāriyaṁ karothā’”ti.  
‘Come now, mendicants, perform a superhuman demonstration of psychic power for the white-clothed laypeople.’”  
Sādhu, bhante, bhagavā ekaṁ bhikkhuṁ samādisatu, yo uttari manussadhammā iddhipāṭihāriyaṁ karissati;  
Please direct a mendicant to perform a superhuman demonstration of psychic power.  
1. Iddhipāṭihāriya  
1. The Demonstration of Psychic Power  
Iddhipāṭihāriyaṁ, ādesanāpāṭihāriyaṁ, anusāsanīpāṭihāriyaṁ.  
The demonstration of psychic power, the demonstration of revealing, and the demonstration of instruction.  
Katamañca, kevaṭṭa, iddhipāṭihāriyaṁ?  
And what is the demonstration of psychic power?  
Idha, kevaṭṭa, bhikkhu anekavihitaṁ iddhividhaṁ paccanubhoti—ekopi hutvā bahudhā hoti, bahudhāpi hutvā eko hoti; āvibhāvaṁ tirobhāvaṁ tirokuṭṭaṁ tiropākāraṁ tiropabbataṁ asajjamāno gacchati seyyathāpi ākāse; pathaviyāpi ummujjanimujjaṁ karoti seyyathāpi udake; udakepi abhijjamāne gacchati seyyathāpi pathaviyaṁ; ākāsepi pallaṅkena kamati seyyathāpi pakkhī sakuṇo; imepi candimasūriye evaṁ mahiddhike evaṁ mahānubhāve pāṇinā parāmasati parimajjati; yāva brahmalokāpi kāyena vasaṁ vatteti.  
It’s a mendicant who wields the many kinds of psychic power: multiplying themselves and becoming one again; appearing and disappearing; going unimpeded through a wall, a rampart, or a mountain as if through space; diving in and out of the earth as if it were water; walking on water as if it were earth; flying cross-legged through the sky like a bird; touching and stroking with the hand the sun and moon, so mighty and powerful; controlling the body as far as the Brahmā realm.  
‘acchariyaṁ vata bho, abbhutaṁ vata bho, samaṇassa mahiddhikatā mahānubhāvatā.  
‘Oh, how incredible, how amazing! The ascetic has such psychic power and might!  
“Imaṁ kho ahaṁ, kevaṭṭa, iddhipāṭihāriye ādīnavaṁ sampassamāno iddhipāṭihāriyena aṭṭīyāmi harāyāmi jigucchāmi.  
“Seeing this drawback in psychic power, I’m horrified, repelled, and disgusted by demonstrations of psychic power.  
‘acchariyaṁ vata bho, abbhutaṁ vata bho, samaṇassa mahiddhikatā mahānubhāvatā.  
‘Oh, how incredible, how amazing! The ascetic has such psychic power and might!  

“acchariyaṁ, āvuso, abbhutaṁ, āvuso, tathāgatassa mahiddhikatā mahānubhāvatā.   “It’s incredible, reverends, it’s amazing! The Realized One has such psychic power and might!  
Atha kho te, bhikkhave, bhikkhū appekacce sakena iddhānubhāvena appekacce devatānaṁ iddhānubhāvena ekāheneva bandhumatiṁ rājadhāniṁ upasaṅkamiṁsu pātimokkhuddesāyāti.  
Then that very day the mendicants went to Bandhumatī to recite the monastic code. Some went by their own psychic power, and some by the psychic power of the deities.  

Yassa kassaci, ānanda, cattāro iddhipādā bhāvitā bahulīkatā yānīkatā vatthukatā anuṭṭhitā paricitā susamāraddhā, so ākaṅkhamāno kappaṁ vā tiṭṭheyya kappāvasesaṁ vā.   Whoever has developed and cultivated the four bases of psychic power—made them a vehicle and a basis, kept them up, consolidated them, and properly implemented them—may, if they wish, live for the proper lifespan or what’s left of it.  
Tathāgatassa kho, ānanda, cattāro iddhipādā bhāvitā bahulīkatā yānīkatā vatthukatā anuṭṭhitā paricitā susamāraddhā, so ākaṅkhamāno, ānanda, tathāgato kappaṁ vā tiṭṭheyya kappāvasesaṁ vā”ti.  
The Realized One has developed and cultivated the four bases of psychic power, made them a vehicle and a basis, kept them up, consolidated them, and properly implemented them. If he wished, the Realized One could live for the proper lifespan or what’s left of it.”

The Realized One has developed and cultivated the four bases of psychic power, made them a vehicle and a basis, kept them up, consolidated them, and properly implemented them. If he wished, the Realized One could live for the proper lifespan or what’s left of it.”  
Puna caparaṁ, ānanda, samaṇo vā hoti brāhmaṇo vā iddhimā cetovasippatto, devo vā mahiddhiko mahānubhāvo, tassa parittā pathavīsaññā bhāvitā hoti, appamāṇā āposaññā. So imaṁ pathaviṁ kampeti saṅkampeti sampakampeti sampavedheti.  
Furthermore, there is an ascetic or brahmin with psychic power who has achieved mastery of the mind, or a god who is mighty and powerful. They’ve developed a limited perception of earth and a limitless perception of water. They make the earth shake and rock and tremble.  
‘yassa kassaci, ānanda, cattāro iddhipādā bhāvitā bahulīkatā yānīkatā vatthukatā anuṭṭhitā paricitā susamāraddhā, so ākaṅkhamāno kappaṁ vā tiṭṭheyya kappāvasesaṁ vā.  
‘Whoever has developed and cultivated the four bases of psychic power—made them a vehicle and a basis, kept them up, consolidated them, and properly implemented them—may, if they wish, live for the proper lifespan or what’s left of it.  
Tathāgatassa kho, ānanda, cattāro iddhipādā bhāvitā bahulīkatā yānīkatā vatthukatā anuṭṭhitā paricitā susamāraddhā. So ākaṅkhamāno, ānanda, tathāgato kappaṁ vā tiṭṭheyya kappāvasesaṁ vā’”ti.

The Realized One has developed and cultivated the four bases of psychic power, made them a vehicle and a basis, kept them up, consolidated them, and properly implemented them. If he wished, the Realized One could live for the proper lifespan or what’s left of it.’  
Seyyathidaṁ—cattāro satipaṭṭhānā, cattāro sammappadhānā, cattāro iddhipādā, pañcindriyāni, pañca balāni, satta bojjhaṅgā, ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo.  
They are: the four kinds of mindfulness meditation, the four right efforts, the four bases of psychic power, the five faculties, the five powers, the seven awakening factors, and the noble eightfold path.  
“acchariyaṁ vata bho, abbhutaṁ vata bho, tathāgatassa mahiddhikatā mahānubhāvatā.  
“Oh, how incredible, how amazing! The Realized One has such psychic power and might!  
“acchariyaṁ, bhante, abbhutaṁ, bhante, tathāgatassa mahiddhikatā mahānubhāvatā.  
“It’s incredible, sir, it’s amazing! The Realized One has such psychic power and might!  

sabbaseto sattappatiṭṭho iddhimā vehāsaṅgamo uposatho nāma nāgarājā.   It was an all-white sky-walker with psychic power, touching the ground in seven places, a king of elephants named Sabbath.  
sabbaseto kāḷasīso muñjakeso iddhimā vehāsaṅgamo valāhako nāma assarājā.  
It was an all-white sky-walker with psychic power, with head of black and mane like woven reeds, a royal steed named Thundercloud.  

6. Bhāvitaiddhipāda   6. Developing the Bases of Psychic Power  
“Taṁ kiṁ maññanti, bhonto devā tāvatiṁsā, yāva supaññattā cime tena bhagavatā jānatā passatā arahatā sammāsambuddhena cattāro iddhipādā paññattā iddhipahutāya iddhivisavitāya iddhivikubbanatāya.  
“What do the good gods of the Thirty-Three think? How well described by the Blessed One—who knows and sees, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha—are the four bases of psychic power! They are taught for the amplification, burgeoning, and transformation of psychic power.  
iddhipahutāya → iddhibahulīkatāya (sya-all, km)  
Idha bho bhikkhu chandasamādhippadhānasaṅkhārasamannāgataṁ iddhipādaṁ bhāveti.  
It’s when a mendicant develops the basis of psychic power that has immersion due to enthusiasm, and active effort.  
Vīriyasamādhippadhānasaṅkhārasamannāgataṁ iddhipādaṁ bhāveti.  
They develop the basis of psychic power that has immersion due to energy, and active effort.  
Cittasamādhippadhānasaṅkhārasamannāgataṁ iddhipādaṁ bhāveti.  
They develop the basis of psychic power that has immersion due to mental development, and active effort.  
Vīmaṁsāsamādhippadhānasaṅkhārasamannāgataṁ iddhipādaṁ bhāveti.  
They develop the basis of psychic power that has immersion due to inquiry, and active effort.  
Ime kho, bho, tena bhagavatā jānatā passatā arahatā sammāsambuddhena cattāro iddhipādā paññattā iddhipahutāya iddhivisavitāya iddhivikubbanatāya.  
These are the four bases of psychic power taught by the Buddha for the amplification, burgeoning, and transformation of psychic power.  
Yepi hi keci bho etarahi samaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vā anekavihitaṁ iddhividhaṁ paccanubhonti, sabbe te imesaṁyeva catunnaṁ iddhipādānaṁ bhāvitattā bahulīkatattā.  
or present who wield the many kinds of psychic power do so by developing and cultivating these four bases of psychic power.  
“Ahampi kho bho imesaṁyeva catunnañca iddhipādānaṁ bhāvitattā bahulīkatattā evaṁ mahiddhiko evaṁmahānubhāvo”ti.  
“I too became so mighty and powerful by developing and cultivating these four bases of psychic power.”  

‘Na hi pana me, bhante, bhagavā uttari manussadhammā iddhipāṭihāriyaṁ karotī’ti.   ‘But sir, the Buddha never performs any superhuman demonstrations of psychic power for me.’  
ehi tvaṁ, sunakkhatta, mamaṁ uddissa viharāhi, ahaṁ te uttari manussadhammā iddhipāṭihāriyaṁ karissāmī’ti?  
“Come, live dedicated to me and I will perform a superhuman demonstration of psychic power for you”?’  
ahaṁ, bhante, bhagavantaṁ uddissa viharissāmi, bhagavā me uttari manussadhammā iddhipāṭihāriyaṁ karissatī’ti?  
“Sir, I shall live dedicated to the Buddha, and the Buddha will perform a superhuman demonstration of psychic power for me”?’  
kate vā uttari manussadhammā iddhipāṭihāriye akate vā uttari manussadhammā iddhipāṭihāriye yassatthāya mayā dhammo desito so niyyāti takkarassa sammā dukkhakkhayāyā’ti?  
Whether or not there is a demonstration of psychic power, does my teaching lead someone who practices it to the goal of the complete ending of suffering?’  
‘Iti kira, sunakkhatta, kate vā uttari manussadhammā iddhipāṭihāriye, akate vā uttari manussadhammā iddhipāṭihāriye, yassatthāya mayā dhammo desito, so niyyāti takkarassa sammā dukkhakkhayāya.  
‘So it seems that whether or not there is a demonstration of psychic power, my teaching leads someone who practices it to the goal of the complete ending of suffering.  
Tatra, sunakkhatta, kiṁ uttari manussadhammā iddhipāṭihāriyaṁ kataṁ karissati?  
In that case, what is the point of superhuman demonstrations of psychic power?  
yadi evaṁ sante kataṁ vā hoti uttari manussadhammā iddhipāṭihāriyaṁ, akataṁ vā’ti?  
If that is so, has a superhuman demonstration of psychic power been performed or not?’  
‘Addhā kho, bhante, evaṁ sante kataṁ hoti uttari manussadhammā iddhipāṭihāriyaṁ, no akatan’ti.  
‘Clearly, sir, a superhuman demonstration of psychic power has been performed.’  
‘Evampi kho maṁ tvaṁ, moghapurisa, uttari manussadhammā iddhipāṭihāriyaṁ karontaṁ evaṁ vadesi— 
‘Though I performed such a superhuman demonstration of psychic power you say this:  
na hi pana me, bhante, bhagavā uttari manussadhammā iddhipāṭihāriyaṁ karotīti.  
“But sir, the Buddha never performs any superhuman demonstrations of psychic power for me.”

If that is so, has a superhuman demonstration of psychic power been performed or not?’

‘Though I perform such a superhuman demonstration of psychic power you say this:  
“na hi pana me, bhante, bhagavā uttari manussadhammā iddhipāṭihāriyaṁ karotī”ti.  
“But sir, the Buddha never performs any superhuman demonstrations of psychic power for me.”  
Ñāṇavādo kho pana ñāṇavādena arahati uttari manussadhammā iddhipāṭihāriyaṁ dassetuṁ.  
One who speaks from knowledge ought to display a superhuman demonstration of psychic power to another who speaks from knowledge.  
Te tattha ubhopi uttari manussadhammā iddhipāṭihāriyaṁ kareyyāma.  
there we should both perform a superhuman demonstration of psychic power.  
Ekañce samaṇo gotamo uttari manussadhammā iddhipāṭihāriyaṁ karissati, dvāhaṁ karissāmi.  
If he performs one demonstration of psychic power, I’ll perform two.  
Iti yāvatakaṁ yāvatakaṁ samaṇo gotamo uttari manussadhammā iddhipāṭihāriyaṁ karissati, taddiguṇaṁ taddiguṇāhaṁ karissāmī’ti.  
However many demonstrations of psychic power the ascetic Gotama performs, I’ll perform double.’  
5. Iddhipāṭihāriyakathā  
5. On Demonstrations of Psychic Power  
Abhikkamathāyasmanto abhikkamathāyasmanto, sādhurūpānaṁ samaṇānaṁ uttari manussadhammā iddhipāṭihāriyaṁ bhavissatī’ti.  
Come forth, sirs, come forth! There will be a superhuman demonstration of psychic power by the holy ascetics!’  
‘sādhurūpānaṁ kira, bho, samaṇānaṁ uttari manussadhammā iddhipāṭihāriyaṁ bhavissati;  
‘It seems there will be a superhuman demonstration of psychic power by the holy ascetics!  
‘sādhurūpānaṁ kira, bho, samaṇānaṁ uttari manussadhammā iddhipāṭihāriyaṁ bhavissati;  
‘It seems there will be a superhuman demonstration of psychic power by the holy ascetics!  
Ñāṇavādo kho pana ñāṇavādena arahati uttari manussadhammā iddhipāṭihāriyaṁ dassetuṁ.  
One who speaks from knowledge ought to display a superhuman demonstration of psychic power to another who speaks from knowledge.  
Te tattha ubhopi uttari manussadhammā iddhipāṭihāriyaṁ kareyyāma.  
there we should both perform a superhuman demonstration of psychic power.

Iti yāvatakaṁ yāvatakaṁ samaṇo gotamo uttari manussadhammā iddhipāṭihāriyaṁ karissati, taddiguṇaṁ taddiguṇāhaṁ karissāmī”ti  
However many demonstrations of psychic power the ascetic Gotama performs, I’ll perform double.’  
yadi evaṁ sante kataṁ vā hoti uttari manussadhammā iddhipāṭihāriyaṁ, akataṁ vā’ti?  
If that is so, has a superhuman demonstration of psychic power been performed or not?’  
‘Addhā kho, bhante, evaṁ sante kataṁ hoti uttari manussadhammā iddhipāṭihāriyaṁ, no akatan’ti.  
‘Clearly, sir, a superhuman demonstration of psychic power has been performed.’  
‘Evampi kho maṁ tvaṁ, moghapurisa, uttari manussadhammā iddhipāṭihāriyaṁ karontaṁ evaṁ vadesi— 
‘Though I perform such a superhuman demonstration of psychic power you say this:  
na hi pana me, bhante, bhagavā uttari manussadhammā iddhipāṭihāriyaṁ karotīti.  
“But sir, the Buddha never performs any superhuman demonstrations of psychic power for me.”  

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu chandasamādhipadhānasaṅkhārasamannāgataṁ iddhipādaṁ bhāveti,   It’s when a mendicant develops the basis of psychic power that has immersion due to enthusiasm, and active effort.  
vīriyasamādhipadhānasaṅkhārasamannāgataṁ iddhipādaṁ bhāveti,  
They develop the basis of psychic power that has immersion due to energy, and active effort.  
cittasamādhipadhānasaṅkhārasamannāgataṁ iddhipādaṁ bhāveti,  
They develop the basis of psychic power that has immersion due to mental development, and active effort.  
vīmaṁsāsamādhipadhānasaṅkhārasamannāgataṁ iddhipādaṁ bhāveti.  
They develop the basis of psychic power that has immersion due to inquiry, and active effort.  
So imesaṁ catunnaṁ iddhipādānaṁ bhāvitattā bahulīkatattā ākaṅkhamāno kappaṁ vā tiṭṭheyya kappāvasesaṁ vā.  
Having developed and cultivated these four bases of psychic power they may, if they wish, live for the proper lifespan or what’s left of it.  

cattāro satipaṭṭhānā, cattāro sammappadhānā, cattāro iddhipādā, pañcindriyāni, pañca balāni, satta bojjhaṅgā, ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo.   the four kinds of mindfulness meditation, the four right efforts, the four bases of psychic power, the five faculties, the five powers, the seven awakening factors, and the noble eightfold path.

1.15. Psychic Powers  
Aparaṁ pana, bhante, etadānuttariyaṁ, yathā bhagavā dhammaṁ deseti iddhividhāsu.  
And moreover, sir, how the Buddha teaches psychic power is unsurpassable.  
Dvemā, bhante, iddhividhāyo— 
There are these two kinds of psychic power.  
atthi, bhante, iddhi sāsavā saupadhikā, ‘no ariyā’ti vuccati.  
There are psychic powers that are accompanied by defilements and attachments, and are said to be ignoble.  
Atthi, bhante, iddhi anāsavā anupadhikā ‘ariyā’ti vuccati.  
And there are psychic powers that are free of defilements and attachments, and are said to be noble.  
Katamā ca, bhante, iddhi sāsavā saupadhikā, ‘no ariyā’ti vuccati?  
What are the psychic powers that are accompanied by defilements and attachments, and are said to be ignoble?  
idha, bhante, ekacco samaṇo vā brāhmaṇo vā ātappamanvāya …pe… tathārūpaṁ cetosamādhiṁ phusati, yathāsamāhite citte anekavihitaṁ iddhividhaṁ paccanubhoti— 
It’s when some ascetic or brahmin—by dint of keen, resolute, committed, and diligent effort, and right application of mind—experiences an immersion of the heart of such a kind that they wield the many kinds of psychic power:  
Ayaṁ, bhante, iddhi sāsavā saupadhikā, ‘no ariyā’ti vuccati.  
These are the psychic powers that are accompanied by defilements and attachments, and are said to be ignoble.  
Katamā pana, bhante, iddhi anāsavā anupadhikā, ‘ariyā’ti vuccati?  
But what are the psychic powers that are free of defilements and attachments, and are said to be noble?  
Ayaṁ, bhante, iddhi anāsavā anupadhikā ‘ariyā’ti vuccati.  
These are the psychic powers that are free of defilements and attachments, and are said to be noble.  
Etadānuttariyaṁ, bhante, iddhividhāsu.  
This is unsurpassable when it comes to psychic powers.  
Taṁ bhagavā asesamabhijānāti, taṁ bhagavato asesamabhijānato uttari abhiññeyyaṁ natthi, yadabhijānaṁ añño samaṇo vā brāhmaṇo vā bhagavatā bhiyyobhiññataro assa yadidaṁ iddhividhāsu.  
The Buddha understands this without exception. There is nothing to be understood beyond this whereby another ascetic or brahmin might be superior in direct knowledge to the Buddha when it comes to psychic powers.  

Seyyathidaṁ—cattāro satipaṭṭhānā, cattāro sammappadhānā, cattāro iddhipādā, pañcindriyāni, pañca balāni, satta bojjhaṅgā, ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo.   They are the four kinds of mindfulness meditation, the four right efforts, the four bases of psychic power, the five faculties, the five powers, the seven awakening factors, and the noble eightfold path.  

Yāpayati ca vasiddhibhāvanāya,   mastery in the development of psychic power.  

iddhipāṭihāriyaṁ, ādesanāpāṭihāriyaṁ, anusāsanīpāṭihāriyaṁ.   The demonstration of psychic power, the demonstration of revealing, and the demonstration of instruction.  
Cattāro iddhipādā.  
Four bases of psychic power:  
Idhāvuso, bhikkhu chandasamādhipadhānasaṅkhārasamannāgataṁ iddhipādaṁ bhāveti.  
A mendicant develops the basis of psychic power that has immersion due to enthusiasm, and active effort.  
Cittasamādhipadhānasaṅkhārasamannāgataṁ iddhipādaṁ bhāveti.  
They develop the basis of psychic power that has immersion due to mental development, and active effort.  
Vīriyasamādhipadhānasaṅkhārasamannāgataṁ iddhipādaṁ bhāveti.  
They develop the basis of psychic power that has immersion due to energy, and active effort.  
Vīmaṁsāsamādhipadhānasaṅkhārasamannāgataṁ iddhipādaṁ bhāveti.  
They develop the basis of psychic power that has immersion due to inquiry, and active effort.  

idhāvuso, bhikkhu anekavihitaṁ iddhividhaṁ paccanubhoti—ekopi hutvā bahudhā hoti, bahudhāpi hutvā eko hoti; āvibhāvaṁ tirobhāvaṁ; tirokuṭṭaṁ tiropākāraṁ tiropabbataṁ asajjamāno gacchati seyyathāpi ākāse; pathaviyāpi ummujjanimujjaṁ karoti seyyathāpi udake; udakepi abhijjamāne gacchati seyyathāpi pathaviyaṁ; ākāsepi pallaṅkena kamati seyyathāpi pakkhī sakuṇo; imepi candimasūriye evaṁmahiddhike evaṁmahānubhāve pāṇinā parāmasati parimajjati; yāva brahmalokāpi kāyena vasaṁ vatteti.   A mendicant wields the many kinds of psychic power: multiplying themselves and becoming one again; appearing and disappearing; going unimpeded through a wall, a rampart, or a mountain as if through space; diving in and out of the earth as if it were water; walking on water as if it were earth; flying cross-legged through the sky like a bird; touching and stroking with the hand the sun and moon, so mighty and powerful; controlling the body as far as the Brahmā realm.  

Ākaṅkheyya ce, bhikkhave, bhikkhu: ‘anekavihitaṁ iddhividhaṁ paccanubhaveyyaṁ—ekopi hutvā bahudhā assaṁ, bahudhāpi hutvā eko assaṁ; āvibhāvaṁ tirobhāvaṁ; tirokuṭṭaṁ tiropākāraṁ tiropabbataṁ asajjamāno gaccheyyaṁ, seyyathāpi ākāse; pathaviyāpi ummujjanimujjaṁ kareyyaṁ, seyyathāpi udake; udakepi abhijjamāne gaccheyyaṁ, seyyathāpi pathaviyaṁ; ākāsepi pallaṅkena kameyyaṁ, seyyathāpi pakkhī sakuṇo; imepi candimasūriye evaṁmahiddhike evaṁmahānubhāve pāṇinā parāmaseyyaṁ parimajjeyyaṁ; yāva brahmalokāpi kāyena vasaṁ vatteyyan’ti, sīlesvevassa paripūrakārī …pe… brūhetā suññāgārānaṁ.   A mendicant might wish: ‘May I wield the many kinds of psychic power: multiplying myself and becoming one again; appearing and disappearing; going unimpeded through a wall, a rampart, or a mountain as if through space; diving in and out of the earth as if it were water; walking on water as if it were earth; flying cross-legged through the sky like a bird; touching and stroking with my hand the sun and moon, so mighty and powerful; controlling the body as far as the Brahmā realm.’ So let them fulfill their precepts …  

‘itipi so bhagavā anekavihitaṁ iddhividhaṁ paccanubhoti—ekopi hutvā bahudhā hoti, bahudhāpi hutvā eko hoti; āvibhāvaṁ, tirobhāvaṁ; tirokuṭṭaṁ tiropākāraṁ tiropabbataṁ asajjamāno gacchati, seyyathāpi ākāse; pathaviyāpi ummujjanimujjaṁ karoti, seyyathāpi udake; udakepi abhijjamāne gacchati, seyyathāpi pathaviyaṁ; ākāsepi pallaṅkena kamati, seyyathāpi pakkhī sakuṇo; imepi candimasūriye evaṁmahiddhike evaṁmahānubhāve pāṇinā parimasati parimajjati; yāva brahmalokāpi kāyena vasaṁ vattetī’ti.   ‘That Blessed One wields the many kinds of psychic power: multiplying himself and becoming one again; appearing and disappearing; going unimpeded through a wall, a rampart, or a mountain as if through space; diving in and out of the earth as if it were water; walking on water as if it were earth; flying cross-legged through the sky like a bird; touching and stroking with the hand the sun and moon, so mighty and powerful; controlling the body as far as the Brahmā realm.’  

So chandasamādhipadhānasaṅkhārasamannāgataṁ iddhipādaṁ bhāveti,   They develop the basis of psychic power that has immersion due to enthusiasm, and active effort …  
vīriyasamādhipadhānasaṅkhārasamannāgataṁ iddhipādaṁ bhāveti,  
the basis of psychic power that has immersion due to energy, and active effort …  
cittasamādhipadhānasaṅkhārasamannāgataṁ iddhipādaṁ bhāveti,  
the basis of psychic power that has immersion due to mental development, and active effort …  
vīmaṁsāsamādhipadhānasaṅkhārasamannāgataṁ iddhipādaṁ bhāveti, ussoḷhīyeva pañcamī.  
the basis of psychic power that has immersion due to inquiry, and active effort. And the fifth is sheer vigor.  

Atha kho āyasmā mahāmoggallāno tathārūpaṁ iddhābhisaṅkhāraṁ abhisaṅkhāsi yathā vejayantaṁ pāsādaṁ pādaṅguṭṭhakena saṅkampesi sampakampesi sampavedhesi.   Then Moggallāna used his psychic power to make the Palace of Victory shake and rock and tremble with his big toe.  
abhisaṅkhāsi → abhisaṅkhāreti (sya-all, km); abhisaṅkhāresi (mr)  

Atha kho ahaṁ, bhikkhave, tathārūpaṁ iddhābhisaṅkhāraṁ abhisaṅkhāsiṁ:   Then I used my psychic power to will that  
Samaṇassa gotamassa mahiddhikatā mahānubhāvatā, na ca vata no ito pubbe diṭṭho vā, suto vā, añño samaṇo vā brāhmaṇo vā evaṁ mahiddhiko evaṁ mahānubhāvo yathāyaṁ samaṇo gotamo sakyaputto sakyakulā pabbajito.  
The ascetic Gotama has such psychic power and might! We’ve never before seen or heard of any other ascetic or brahmin with psychic power and might like the ascetic Gotama, who has gone forth from the Sakyan clan.  

Iddhibalenupatthaddho,   owing to psychic power,  

idha āgaccheyya samaṇo vā brāhmaṇo vā iddhimā cetovasippatto.   Suppose an ascetic or brahmin with psychic power, who has achieved mastery of the mind, were to come along  
“Dasapi, bhante, nāḷandā, vīsampi nāḷandā, tiṁsampi nāḷandā, cattārīsampi nāḷandā, paññāsampi nāḷandā pahoti so samaṇo vā brāhmaṇo vā iddhimā cetovasippatto ekena manopadosena bhasmaṁ kātuṁ.  
“Sir, an ascetic or brahmin with psychic power, who has achieved mastery of the mind, could reduce ten, twenty, thirty, forty, or fifty Nāḷandās to ashes with a single malevolent act of will.  

‘anekavihitaṁ iddhividhaṁ paccanubhaveyyaṁ—ekopi hutvā bahudhā assaṁ, bahudhāpi hutvā eko assaṁ; āvibhāvaṁ, tirobhāvaṁ; tirokuṭṭaṁ tiropākāraṁ tiropabbataṁ asajjamāno gaccheyyaṁ, seyyathāpi ākāse; pathaviyāpi ummujjanimujjaṁ kareyyaṁ, seyyathāpi udake; udakepi abhijjamāne gaccheyyaṁ, seyyathāpi pathaviyaṁ; ākāsepi pallaṅkena kameyyaṁ, seyyathāpi pakkhī sakuṇo; imepi candimasūriye evaṁmahiddhike evaṁmahānubhāve pāṇinā parimaseyyaṁ, parimajjeyyaṁ; yāva brahmalokāpi kāyena vasaṁ vatteyyan’ti,   ‘May I wield the many kinds of psychic power: multiplying myself and becoming one again; appearing and disappearing; going unimpeded through a wall, a rampart, or a mountain as if through space; diving in and out of the earth as if it were water; walking on water as if it were earth; flying cross-legged through the sky like a bird; touching and stroking with my hand the sun and moon, so mighty and powerful; controlling my body as far as the Brahmā realm.’  

Puna caparaṁ, udāyi, akkhātā mayā sāvakānaṁ paṭipadā, yathāpaṭipannā me sāvakā cattāro iddhipāde bhāventi.   Furthermore, I have explained to my disciples a practice that they use to develop the four bases of psychic power.  
Idhudāyi, bhikkhu chandasamādhipadhānasaṅkhārasamannāgataṁ iddhipādaṁ bhāveti,  
It’s when a mendicant develops the basis of psychic power that has immersion due to enthusiasm, and active effort.  
vīriyasamādhipadhānasaṅkhārasamannāgataṁ iddhipādaṁ bhāveti,  
They develop the basis of psychic power that has immersion due to energy, and active effort.  
cittasamādhipadhānasaṅkhārasamannāgataṁ iddhipādaṁ bhāveti,  
They develop the basis of psychic power that has immersion due to mental development, and active effort.

Furthermore, I have explained to my disciples a practice that they use to wield the many kinds of psychic power: multiplying themselves and becoming one again; appearing and disappearing; going unimpeded through a wall, a rampart, or a mountain as if through space; diving in and out of the earth as if it were water; walking on water as if it were earth; flying cross-legged through the sky like a bird; touching and stroking with the hand the sun and moon, so mighty and powerful. They control the body as far as the Brahmā realm.  
abhijjamāne → abhijjamānā (mr)  
Evameva kho, udāyi, akkhātā mayā sāvakānaṁ paṭipadā, yathāpaṭipannā me sāvakā anekavihitaṁ iddhividhaṁ paccanubhonti—ekopi hutvā bahudhā honti, bahudhāpi hutvā eko hoti; āvibhāvaṁ, tirobhāvaṁ; tirokuṭṭaṁ tiropākāraṁ tiropabbataṁ asajjamānā gacchanti, seyyathāpi ākāse; pathaviyāpi ummujjanimujjaṁ karonti, seyyathāpi udake; udakepi abhijjamāne gacchanti, seyyathāpi pathaviyaṁ; ākāsepi pallaṅkena kamanti, seyyathāpi pakkhī sakuṇo; imepi candimasūriye evaṁmahiddhike evaṁmahānubhāve pāṇinā parimasanti parimajjanti, yāva brahmalokāpi kāyena vasaṁ vattenti.  
In the same way, I have explained to my disciples a practice that they use to wield the many kinds of psychic power …  

Atha kho bhagavā tathārūpaṁ iddhābhisaṅkhāraṁ abhisaṅkhāsi yathā coro aṅgulimālo bhagavantaṁ pakatiyā gacchantaṁ sabbathāmena gacchanto na sakkoti sampāpuṇituṁ.   But the Buddha used his psychic power to will that Aṅgulimāla could not catch up with him no matter how hard he tried, even though the Buddha kept walking at a normal speed.  
abhisaṅkhāsi → abhisaṅkhāresi (sya-all, km, mr)  

Atha kho bhagavā tathārūpaṁ iddhābhisaṅkhāraṁ abhisaṅkhāsi yathā addasa uttaro māṇavo bhagavato kosohitaṁ vatthaguyhaṁ.   So the Buddha used his psychic power to will that Uttara would see his private parts covered in a foreskin.  
Atha kho bhagavā tathārūpaṁ iddhābhisaṅkhāraṁ abhisaṅkhāsi yathā addasa brahmāyu brāhmaṇo bhagavato kosohitaṁ vatthaguyhaṁ.  
So the Buddha used his psychic power to will that Brahmāyu would see his private parts covered in a foreskin.  

Atha kho bhagavā tathārūpaṁ iddhābhisaṅkhāraṁ abhisaṅkhāsi, yathā addasa selo brāhmaṇo bhagavato kosohitaṁ vatthaguyhaṁ.   The Buddha used his psychic power to will that Sela would see his private parts covered in a foreskin.  

“Aṭṭhānaṁ kho etaṁ, māṇava, anavakāso yaṁ nissaṭṭhatiṇakaṭṭhupādānaṁ aggiṁ jāleyya aññatra iddhimatā.   “But it isn’t possible, except by psychic power.  

cattāro satipaṭṭhānā cattāro sammappadhānā cattāro iddhipādā pañcindriyāni pañca balāni satta bojjhaṅgā ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo, tattha sabbeheva samaggehi sammodamānehi avivadamānehi sikkhitabbaṁ.   the four kinds of mindfulness meditation, the four right efforts, the four bases of psychic power, the five faculties, the five powers, the seven awakening factors, and the noble eightfold path. You should train in these things in harmony, appreciating each other, without quarreling.  

cattāro satipaṭṭhānā cattāro sammappadhānā cattāro iddhipādā pañcindriyāni pañca balāni satta bojjhaṅgā ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo, passasi no tvaṁ, ānanda, imesu dhammesu dvepi bhikkhū nānāvāde”ti?   the four kinds of mindfulness meditation, the four right efforts, the four bases of psychic power, the five faculties, the five powers, the seven awakening factors, and the noble eightfold path?”  

Anekavihitaṁ iddhividhaṁ paccanubhoti—ekopi hutvā bahudhā hoti, bahudhāpi hutvā eko hoti; āvibhāvaṁ tirobhāvaṁ; tirokuṭṭaṁ tiropākāraṁ tiropabbataṁ asajjamāno gacchati, seyyathāpi ākāse; pathaviyāpi ummujjanimujjaṁ karoti, seyyathāpi udake; udakepi abhijjamāne gacchati, seyyathāpi pathaviyaṁ; ākāsepi pallaṅkena kamati, seyyathāpi pakkhī sakuṇo; imepi candimasūriye evaṁmahiddhike evaṁmahānubhāve pāṇinā parimasati parimajjati, yāva brahmalokāpi kāyena vasaṁ vatteti.   They wield the many kinds of psychic power: multiplying themselves and becoming one again; appearing and disappearing; going unimpeded through a wall, a rampart, or a mountain as if through space; diving in and out of the earth as if it were water; walking on water as if it were earth; flying cross-legged through the sky like a bird; touching and stroking with the hand the sun and moon, so mighty and powerful. They control the body as far as the Brahmā realm.  
tirokuṭṭaṁ → tirokuḍḍaṁ (bj, sya-all, km, pts1ed) | parimasati → parāmasati (mr)  

catunnaṁ iddhipādānaṁ …   the four bases of psychic power …  

So anekavihitaṁ iddhividhaṁ paccānubhoti. Ekopi hutvā bahudhā hoti, bahudhāpi hutvā eko hoti, āvibhāvaṁ …pe… yāva brahmalokāpi kāyena vasaṁ vatteti.   They wield the many kinds of psychic power: multiplying themselves and becoming one again … They control the body as far as the Brahmā realm.  

“acchariyaṁ, āvuso, abbhutaṁ, āvuso. Tathāgatassa mahiddhikatā mahānubhāvatā,   “It’s incredible, sir, it’s amazing! The Realized One has such psychic power and might!  

sabbaseto sattappatiṭṭho iddhimā vehāsaṅgamo uposatho nāma nāgarājā.   It was an all-white sky-walker with psychic power, touching the ground in seven places, a king of elephants named Sabbath.  
sabbaseto kāḷasīso muñjakeso iddhimā vehāsaṅgamo valāhako nāma assarājā.  
It was an all-white sky-walker with psychic power, with head of black and mane like woven reeds, a royal steed named Thundercloud.  

Tassa evaṁ imaṁ ariyaṁ aṭṭhaṅgikaṁ maggaṁ bhāvayato cattāropi satipaṭṭhānā bhāvanāpāripūriṁ gacchanti, cattāropi sammappadhānā bhāvanāpāripūriṁ gacchanti, cattāropi iddhipādā bhāvanāpāripūriṁ gacchanti, pañcapi indriyāni bhāvanāpāripūriṁ gacchanti, pañcapi balāni bhāvanāpāripūriṁ gacchanti, sattapi bojjhaṅgā bhāvanāpāripūriṁ gacchanti.   When the noble eightfold path is developed, the following are fully developed: the four kinds of mindfulness meditation, the four right efforts, the four bases of psychic power, the five faculties, the five powers, and the seven awakening factors.  

‘bhāvitā nu kho me cattāro iddhipādā’ti?   the four bases of psychic power …  

Bhūtapubbāhaṁ, bhante, rohitasso nāma isi ahosiṁ bhojaputto iddhimā vehāsaṅgamo.   Once upon a time, I was a seer called Rohitassa of the Bhoja people. I was a sky-walker with psychic powers.  

“Bhagavatā kho, bhante, cattāro iddhipādā bhāvitā bahulīkatā yānīkatā vatthukatā anuṭṭhitā paricitā susamāraddhā.   “The Blessed One, sir, has developed and cultivated the four bases for psychic power, made them a vehicle and a basis, kept them up, consolidated them, and properly implemented them.  

iddhipādā subhāvitā;   I’ve developed the bases of psychic power well.  

Khīṇāsavā arahanto,   and have attained psychic power, expert in reading minds,  
Khīṇāsavā arahanto,  
and have attained psychic power, expert in reading minds,  

“passasi me no tvaṁ, mārisa, evarūpaṁ iddhānubhāvan”ti?   “Good sir, can’t you see that I have such psychic power?”  
“So khvāhaṁ, mārisa, evaṁmahiddhiko evaṁmahānubhāvo kassa aññassa samaṇassa vā brāhmaṇassa vā upaṭṭhānaṁ gamissāmī”ti?  
“Since I have such psychic power and might, what other ascetic or brahmin should I go to and attend upon?”  
“passasi me no tvaṁ, mārisa, evarūpaṁ iddhānubhāvan”ti?  
“Good sir, can’t you see that I have such psychic power?”  
“Tayā ca kho, mārisa, mayā ca sveva bhagavā mahiddhikataro ceva mahānubhāvataro ca.  
“That Buddha has even more psychic power and might than you or me.  

‘acchariyaṁ vata bho, abbhutaṁ vata bho, samaṇassa mahiddhikatā mahānubhāvatā’ti.   ‘Oh, how incredible, how amazing! The ascetic has such psychic power and might!’

Tevijjo iddhipattomhi,   I am master of three knowledges, attained in psychic power,

That is, multiplying yourselves and becoming one again; appearing and disappearing; going unimpeded through a wall, a rampart, or a mountain as if through space; diving in and out of the earth as if it were water; walking on water as if it were earth; flying cross-legged through the sky like a bird; touching and stroking with the hand the sun and moon, so mighty and powerful. Do you control the body as far as the Brahmā realm?”

“Sabbe kho ete, bhikkhave, bhikkhū mahiddhikā.   “All of those mendicants have great psychic power.

I control the body as far as the Brahmā realm.  

Atha kho maṁ, āvuso, bhagavā iddhiyā upasaṅkamitvā etadavoca:   Then the Buddha came up to me with his psychic power and said,  

Kiṁ nu kho āyasmā mahāmoggallāno bhagavantaṁ iddhiyā upasaṅkami;   Did you go to him with your psychic power,  
“Na khvāhaṁ, āvuso, bhagavantaṁ iddhiyā upasaṅkamiṁ;  
“No reverend, I didn’t go to him with my psychic power,  

Nisajja kho bhagavā tathārūpaṁ iddhābhisaṅkhāraṁ abhisaṅkhāsi yathā te bhikkhū ekadvīhikāya sārajjamānarūpā yenāhaṁ tenupasaṅkameyyuṁ.   Then he used his psychic power to will that the mendicants would come to him timidly, alone or in pairs.

“The most junior mendicant in this Saṅgha has such psychic power!”  
“sādhu me, bhante, ayyo mahako uttari manussadhammaṁ iddhipāṭihāriyaṁ dassetū”ti.  
“Sir, please show me a superhuman demonstration of psychic power.”  
Atha kho āyasmā mahako vihāraṁ pavisitvā sūcighaṭikaṁ datvā tathārūpaṁ iddhābhisaṅkhāraṁ abhisaṅkhari yathā tālacchiggaḷena ca aggaḷantarikāya ca acci nikkhamitvā tiṇāni jhāpesi, uttarāsaṅgaṁ na jhāpesi.  
Mahaka entered his dwelling and latched the door. Then he used his psychic power to will that a flame shoot out through the keyhole and the chink in the door, and it burned up the grass but not the upper robe.

A mendicant develops the basis of psychic power that has immersion due to energy …  

evameva kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno ariyaṁ aṭṭhaṅgikaṁ maggaṁ bhāvayato ariyaṁ aṭṭhaṅgikaṁ maggaṁ bahulīkaroto cattāropi satipaṭṭhānā bhāvanāpāripūriṁ gacchanti, cattāropi sammappadhānā bhāvanāpāripūriṁ gacchanti, cattāropi iddhipādā bhāvanāpāripūriṁ gacchanti, pañcapi indriyāni bhāvanāpāripūriṁ gacchanti, pañcapi balāni bhāvanāpāripūriṁ gacchanti, sattapi bojjhaṅgā bhāvanāpāripūriṁ gacchanti.   In the same way, when the noble eightfold path is developed and cultivated the following are fully developed: the four kinds of mindfulness meditation, the four right efforts, the four bases of psychic power, the five faculties, the five powers, and the seven awakening factors.  

“Cattārome, bhikkhave, iddhipādā bhāvitā bahulīkatā apārā pāraṁ gamanāya saṁvattanti.   “Mendicants, when these four bases of psychic power are developed and cultivated they lead to going from the near shore to the far shore.  
Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu chandasamādhippadhānasaṅkhārasamannāgataṁ iddhipādaṁ bhāveti,  
It’s when a mendicant develops the basis of psychic power that has immersion due to enthusiasm, and active effort.  
vīriyasamādhippadhānasaṅkhārasamannāgataṁ iddhipādaṁ bhāveti,  
They develop the basis of psychic power that has immersion due to energy, and active effort.  
cittasamādhippadhānasaṅkhārasamannāgataṁ iddhipādaṁ bhāveti,  
They develop the basis of psychic power that has immersion due to mental development, and active effort.  
vīmaṁsāsamādhippadhānasaṅkhārasamannāgataṁ iddhipādaṁ bhāveti.  
They develop the basis of psychic power that has immersion due to inquiry, and active effort.  
Ime kho, bhikkhave, cattāro iddhipādā bhāvitā bahulīkatā apārā pāraṁ gamanāya saṁvattantī”ti.  
When these four bases of psychic power are developed and cultivated they lead to going from the near shore to the far shore.” 

“Yesaṁ kesañci, bhikkhave, cattāro iddhipādā viraddhā, viraddho tesaṁ ariyo maggo sammā dukkhakkhayagāmī.   “Mendicants, whoever has missed out on the four bases of psychic power has missed out on the noble path to the complete ending of suffering.  
Yesaṁ kesañci, bhikkhave, cattāro iddhipādā āraddhā, āraddho tesaṁ ariyo maggo sammā dukkhakkhayagāmī.  
Whoever has undertaken the four bases of psychic power has undertaken the noble path to the complete ending of suffering.

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu chandasamādhippadhānasaṅkhārasamannāgataṁ iddhipādaṁ bhāveti,  
It’s when a mendicant develops the basis of psychic power that has immersion due to enthusiasm …  
Ime kho, bhikkhave, cattāro iddhipādā bhāvitā bahulīkatā ekantanibbidāya virāgāya nirodhāya upasamāya abhiññāya sambodhāya nibbānāya saṁvattantī”ti.  
These four bases of psychic power, when developed and cultivated, lead solely to disillusionment, dispassion, cessation, peace, insight, awakening, and extinguishment.”

Ye hi keci, bhikkhave, etarahi bhikkhū āsavānaṁ khayā anāsavaṁ cetovimuttiṁ paññāvimuttiṁ diṭṭheva dhamme sayaṁ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharanti, sabbe te catunnaṁ iddhipādānaṁ bhāvitattā bahulīkatattā.   present who realize the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life, and who live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements, do so by developing and cultivating the four bases of psychic power.  
Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu chandasamādhippadhānasaṅkhārasamannāgataṁ iddhipādaṁ bhāveti,  
It’s when a mendicant develops the basis of psychic power that has immersion due to enthusiasm …

These are the four bases of psychic power.  
Imesaṁ kho, bhikkhave, catunnaṁ iddhipādānaṁ bhāvitattā bahulīkatattā tathāgato ‘arahaṁ sammāsambuddho’ti vuccatī”ti.  
It is because he has developed and cultivated these four bases of psychic power that the Realized One is called ‘the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha’.” 

“‘Ayaṁ chandasamādhippadhānasaṅkhārasamannāgato iddhipādo’ti me, bhikkhave, pubbe ananussutesu dhammesu cakkhuṁ udapādi, ñāṇaṁ udapādi, paññā udapādi, vijjā udapādi, āloko udapādi.   “Mendicants: ‘This is the basis of psychic power that has immersion due to enthusiasm, and active effort.’ Such was the vision, knowledge, wisdom, realization, and light that arose in me regarding teachings not learned before from another.  
‘So kho panāyaṁ chandasamādhippadhānasaṅkhārasamannāgato iddhipādo bhāvetabbo’ti me, bhikkhave …  
‘This basis of psychic power … should be developed.’ …  
‘bhāvito’ti me, bhikkhave, pubbe ananussutesu dhammesu cakkhuṁ udapādi, ñāṇaṁ udapādi, paññā udapādi, vijjā udapādi, āloko udapādi.  
‘This basis of psychic power … has been developed.’ Such was the vision, knowledge, wisdom, realization, and light that arose in me regarding teachings not learned before from another.

Evaṁ bhāvitesu kho, bhikkhu, catūsu iddhipādesu evaṁ bahulīkatesu, anekavihitaṁ iddhividhaṁ paccanubhoti—ekopi hutvā bahudhā hoti, bahudhāpi hutvā eko hoti; āvibhāvaṁ, tirobhāvaṁ; tirokuṭṭaṁ tiropākāraṁ tiropabbataṁ asajjamāno gacchati, seyyathāpi ākāse; pathaviyāpi ummujjanimujjaṁ karoti, seyyathāpi udake; udakepi abhijjamāne gacchati, seyyathāpi pathaviyaṁ; ākāsepi pallaṅkena kamati, seyyathāpi pakkhī sakuṇo; imepi candimasūriye evaṁmahiddhike evaṁmahānubhāve pāṇinā parimasati parimajjati; yāva brahmalokāpi kāyena vasaṁ vatteti.  
When the four bases of psychic power have been developed and cultivated in this way, they wield the many kinds of psychic power: multiplying themselves and becoming one again; appearing and disappearing; going unimpeded through a wall, a rampart, or a mountain as if through space; diving in and out of the earth as if it were water; walking on water as if it were earth; flying cross-legged through the sky like a bird; touching and stroking with the hand the sun and moon, so mighty and powerful; controlling the body as far as the Brahmā realm.

When the four bases of psychic power have been developed and cultivated in this way, they hear both kinds of sounds, human and divine, whether near or far.

When the four bases of psychic power have been developed and cultivated in this way, they understand the minds of other beings and individuals, having comprehended them with their own mind.

Iti sākāraṁ sauddesaṁ anekavihitaṁ pubbenivāsaṁ anussarati.  
When the four bases of psychic power have been developed and cultivated in this way, they recollect many kinds of past lives. That is: one, two, three, four, five, ten, twenty, thirty, forty, fifty, a hundred, a thousand, a hundred thousand rebirths; many eons of the world contracting, many eons of the world expanding, many eons of the world contracting and expanding. They remember: ‘There, I was named this, my clan was that, I looked like this, and that was my food. This was how I felt pleasure and pain, and that was how my life ended. When I passed away from that place I was reborn somewhere else. There, too, I was named this, my clan was that, I looked like this, and that was my food. This was how I felt pleasure and pain, and that was how my life ended. When I passed away from that place I was reborn here.’ And so they recollect their many kinds of past lives, with features and details.  
Evaṁ bhāvitesu kho, bhikkhu, catūsu iddhipādesu evaṁ bahulīkatesu, dibbena cakkhunā visuddhena atikkantamānusakena satte passati cavamāne upapajjamāne hīne paṇīte suvaṇṇe dubbaṇṇe, sugate duggate yathākammūpage satte pajānāti: ‘ime vata, bhonto, sattā kāyaduccaritena samannāgatā vacīduccaritena samannāgatā manoduccaritena samannāgatā ariyānaṁ upavādakā micchādiṭṭhikā micchādiṭṭhikammasamādānā; te kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā apāyaṁ duggatiṁ vinipātaṁ nirayaṁ upapannā. When the four bases of psychic power have been developed and cultivated in this way, with clairvoyance that is purified and superhuman, they see sentient beings passing away and being reborn—inferior and superior, beautiful and ugly, in a good place or a bad place. They understand how sentient beings are reborn according to their deeds. ‘These dear beings did bad things by way of body, speech, and mind. They spoke ill of the noble ones; they had wrong view; and they chose to act out of that wrong view. When their body breaks up, after death, they’re reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell. These dear beings, however, did good things by way of body, speech, and mind. They never spoke ill of the noble ones; they had right view; and they chose to act out of that right view. When their body breaks up, after death, they’re reborn in a good place, a heavenly realm.’ And so, with clairvoyance that is purified and superhuman, they see sentient beings passing away and being reborn—inferior and superior, beautiful and ugly, in a good place or a bad place. Then he used his psychic power to make the longhouse shake and rock and tremble with his toe.

When the four bases of psychic power have been developed and cultivated in this way, a mendicant wields the many kinds of psychic power: multiplying themselves and becoming one again … controlling the body as far as the Brahmā realm.

“Yañca kho omāti, bhante, bhagavā iddhiyā manomayena kāyena brahmalokaṁ upasaṅkamituṁ, yañca kho abhijānāti, bhante, bhagavā iminā cātumahābhūtikena kāyena iddhiyā brahmalokaṁ upasaṅkamitā, tayidaṁ, bhante, bhagavato acchariyañceva abbhutañcā”ti.  
“It’s incredible and amazing that the Buddha is capable of going to the Brahmā realm by psychic power with a mind-made body! And that he has personal experience of going to the Brahmā realm by psychic power with this body made up of the four primary elements!”

These are the four bases of psychic power.

Because of developing and cultivating these four bases of psychic power, seven fruits and benefits can be expected.
