‘devalokūpapattiyā, āvuso, samaṇe gotame brahmacariyaṁ vussathā’ti?  
‘Reverend, do you lead the spiritual life with the ascetic Gotama so that you can be reborn in the realm of the gods?’

“Kiṁ pana bhavaṁ piṅgiyānī atthavasaṁ sampassamāno samaṇe gotame evaṁ abhippasanno”ti?  
“But for what reason are you so devoted to the ascetic Gotama?”

evaṁ pasanno ahaṁ samaṇe gotame, ‘pahoti me samaṇo gotamo tathā dhammaṁ desetuṁ, yathāhaṁ imaṁ kaṅkhādhammaṁ pajaheyyan’”ti.  
I am quite confident that the Buddha is capable of teaching me so that I can give up this state of uncertainty.”
evaṁ pasanno ahaṁ samaṇe gotame ‘pahoti me samaṇo gotamo tathā dhammaṁ desetuṁ, yathāhaṁ imaṁ kaṅkhādhammaṁ pajaheyyan’ti.  
I am quite confident that the Buddha is capable of teaching me so that I can give up this state of uncertainty.
evaṁ pasanno ahaṁ samaṇe gotame, ‘pahoti me samaṇo gotamo tathā dhammaṁ desetuṁ, yathāhaṁ imaṁ kaṅkhādhammaṁ pajaheyyan’ti.  

Bhavissanti kho te, sunakkhatta, vattāro, no visahi sunakkhatto licchaviputto samaṇe gotame brahmacariyaṁ carituṁ, so avisahanto sikkhaṁ paccakkhāya hīnāyāvattoti.  
There will be those who say that Sunakkhatta was unable to lead the spiritual life under the ascetic Gotama. That’s why he resigned the training and returned to a lesser life.

‘handa mayaṁ aññāṇatthampi samaṇe gotame brahmacariyaṁ carāma, kiṁ karissati sattāho’”ti?  
‘Come, let us lead the spiritual life under the ascetic Gotama for the sake of enlightenment—for what do seven days matter?’”

“Kaṁ pana bhavaṁ vacchāyano atthavasaṁ sampassamāno samaṇe gotame evaṁ abhippasanno”ti?  
“But for what reason are you so devoted to the ascetic Gotama?” abhippasanno”ti → abhippasanno hotīti (sya-all)
Evameva kho ahaṁ, bho, yato addasaṁ samaṇe gotame cattāri padāni athāhaṁ niṭṭhamagamaṁ:  
In the same way, because I saw four footprints of the ascetic Gotama I came to the conclusion,
Yadāhaṁ, bho, samaṇe gotame imaṁ paṭhamaṁ padaṁ addasaṁ athāhaṁ niṭṭhamagamaṁ:  
When I saw this first footprint of the ascetic Gotama, I came to the conclusion,
Yadāhaṁ, bho, samaṇe gotame imaṁ catutthaṁ padaṁ addasaṁ athāhaṁ niṭṭhamagamaṁ:  
When I saw this fourth footprint of the ascetic Gotama, I came to the conclusion,
Yato kho ahaṁ, bho, samaṇe gotame imāni cattāri padāni addasaṁ athāhaṁ niṭṭhamagamaṁ:  
It’s because I saw these four footprints of the ascetic Gotama that I came to the conclusion,

“carantu bhonto samaṇe gotame brahmacariyavāso.  
“Go, good sirs. The spiritual life is lived under the ascetic Gotama.

“mā bhavaṁ, udāyi, samaṇe gotame brahmacariyaṁ cari;  
“Master Udāyī, don’t lead the spiritual life under the ascetic Gotama.
Mā bhavaṁ, udāyi, samaṇe gotame brahmacariyaṁ cari;  
Master Udāyī, don’t lead the spiritual life under the ascetic Gotama.

atha ca pana samaṇe gotame evarūpaṁ paramanipaccakāraṁ karotī”ti.  
Yet he shows such utmost devotion to the ascetic Gotama!”

“ehi tvaṁ, āvuso susima, samaṇe gotame brahmacariyaṁ cara.  
“Reverend Susīma, please lead the spiritual life with the ascetic Gotama.

‘kimatthiyaṁ, āvuso, samaṇe gotame brahmacariyaṁ vussatī’ti?  
‘Reverends, what’s the purpose of leading the spiritual life under the ascetic Gotama?’
‘katamaṁ pana taṁ, āvuso, dukkhaṁ, yassa pariññāya samaṇe gotame brahmacariyaṁ vussatī’ti?  
‘Reverends, what is that suffering?’

‘kimatthiyaṁ, āvuso, samaṇe gotame brahmacariyaṁ vussatī’ti?  
‘Reverends, what’s the purpose of leading the spiritual life under the ascetic Gotama?’
‘katamaṁ panāvuso, dukkhaṁ, yassa pariññāya samaṇe gotame brahmacariyaṁ vussatī’ti?  
‘Reverends, what is that suffering?’

“Kimatthiyaṁ, āvuso sāriputta, samaṇe gotame brahmacariyaṁ vussatī”ti?  
“Reverend Sāriputta, what’s the purpose of leading the spiritual life under the ascetic Gotama?”

‘kimatthiyaṁ, āvuso, samaṇe gotame brahmacariyaṁ vussatī’ti?  
‘Reverends, what’s the purpose of leading the spiritual life under the ascetic Gotama?’

‘kimatthiyaṁ, āvuso, samaṇe gotame brahmacariyaṁ vussatī’ti, evaṁ puṭṭhā tumhe, bhikkhave, tesaṁ aññatitthiyānaṁ paribbājakānaṁ evaṁ byākareyyātha:  
‘Reverends, what’s the purpose of leading the spiritual life under the ascetic Gotama?’ You should answer them like this:

‘kimatthiyaṁ, āvuso, samaṇe gotame brahmacariyaṁ vussatī’ti, evaṁ puṭṭhā tumhe, bhikkhave, tesaṁ aññatitthiyānaṁ paribbājakānaṁ evaṁ byākareyyātha:  
‘Reverends, what’s the purpose of leading the spiritual life under the ascetic Gotama?’ You should answer them like this:

‘kimatthiyaṁ, āvuso, samaṇe gotame brahmacariyaṁ vussatī’ti, evaṁ puṭṭhā tumhe, bhikkhave, tesaṁ aññatitthiyānaṁ paribbājakānaṁ evaṁ byākareyyātha:  
‘Reverends, what’s the purpose of leading the spiritual life under the ascetic Gotama?’ You should answer them like this:

“kimatthiyaṁ nu kho, bho ānanda, samaṇe gotame brahmacariyaṁ vussatī”ti?  
“Master Ānanda, what’s the purpose of leading the spiritual life under the ascetic Gotama?”
