‘añño nūna tena samayena so rathakāro ahosī’ti.  
‘Surely that chariot-maker must have been someone else at that time?’
Ahaṁ tena samayena so rathakāro ahosiṁ.  
I myself was the chariot-maker at that time.

‘añño nūna tena samayena velāmo brāhmaṇo ahosi, so taṁ dānaṁ adāsi mahādānan’ti.  
‘Surely the brahmin Velāma must have been someone else at that time?’ so → yo (?)
Ahaṁ tena samayena velāmo brāhmaṇo ahosiṁ.  
I myself was the brahmin Velāma at that time.

‘addhā samaṇo gotamo tena samayena rājā vā ahosi mahāvijito yaññassāmi purohito vā brāhmaṇo tassa yaññassa yājetā’ti.  
the ascetic Gotama at that time must have been King Mahāvijita, the owner of the sacrifice, or else the brahmin high priest who facilitated the sacrifice for him.
“Abhijānāmahaṁ, brāhmaṇa, evarūpaṁ yaññaṁ yajitvā vā yājetvā vā kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā sugatiṁ saggaṁ lokaṁ upapajjitā, ahaṁ tena samayena purohito brāhmaṇo ahosiṁ tassa yaññassa yājetā”ti.  
“I do recall that, brahmin. For I myself was the brahmin high priest at that time who facilitated the sacrifice.”

Tena samayena sambahulā devatāyo sahasseva pāṭaligāme vatthūni pariggaṇhanti.  
At that time thousands of deities were taking possession of building sites in Pāṭali Village. sahasseva → sahassasahasseva (bj udānaṭṭhakathā); sahassasseva (pts1ed, mr); sahassaseva (ṭīkāyaṁ pāṭhantaraṁ)

Ye kho panānanda, tena samayena kusāvatiyā rājadhāniyā dhuttā ahesuṁ soṇḍā pipāsā, te tāsaṁ tālapantīnaṁ vāteritānaṁ saddena paricāresuṁ.  
And any addicts, carousers, or drunkards in Kusāvatī at that time were entertained by that sound.
Ye kho panānanda, tena samayena kusāvatiyā rājadhāniyā dhuttā ahesuṁ soṇḍā pipāsā, te tesaṁ kiṅkiṇikajālānaṁ vāteritānaṁ saddena paricāresuṁ.  
And any addicts, carousers, or drunkards in Kusāvatī at that time were entertained by that sound.
Ye kho panānanda, tena samayena kusāvatiyā rājadhāniyā dhuttā ahesuṁ soṇḍā pipāsā, te tāsaṁ tālapantīnaṁ vāteritānaṁ saddena paricāresuṁ.  
And any addicts, carousers, or drunkards in Kusāvatī at that time were entertained by that sound.
Niṭṭhite kho panānanda, dhamme pāsāde niṭṭhitāya dhammāya ca pokkharaṇiyā rājā mahāsudassano ‘ye tena samayena samaṇesu vā samaṇasammatā brāhmaṇesu vā brāhmaṇasammatā’, te sabbakāmehi santappetvā dhammaṁ pāsādaṁ abhiruhi.  
When the palace and its lotus pond were finished, King Mahāsudassana served those who were deemed true ascetics and brahmins with all they desired. Then he ascended the Palace of Principle. pokkharaṇiyā rājā mahāsudassano ‘ye → ye kho panānanda (sya-all, km, pts1ed, mr)
‘añño nūna tena samayena rājā mahāsudassano ahosī’ti,  
‘Surely King Mahāsudassana must have been someone else at that time?’
na kho panetaṁ, ānanda, evaṁ daṭṭhabbaṁ. Ahaṁ tena samayena rājā mahāsudassano ahosiṁ.  
But you should not see it like that. I myself was King Mahāsudassana at that time.
Tesaṁ kho panānanda, caturāsītinagarasahassānaṁ ekaññeva taṁ nagaraṁ hoti, yaṁ tena samayena ajjhāvasāmi yadidaṁ kusāvatī rājadhānī.  
Of those 84,000 cities, I only stayed in one, the capital Kusāvatī.
Tesaṁ kho panānanda, caturāsīti pāsādasahassānaṁ ekoyeva so pāsādo hoti, yaṁ tena samayena ajjhāvasāmi yadidaṁ dhammo pāsādo.  
Of those 84,000 mansions, I only dwelt in one, the Palace of Principle.
Tesaṁ kho panānanda, caturāsīti kūṭāgārasahassānaṁ ekaññeva taṁ kūṭāgāraṁ hoti, yaṁ tena samayena ajjhāvasāmi yadidaṁ mahāviyūhaṁ kūṭāgāraṁ.  
Of those 84,000 chambers, I only dwelt in the great foyer.
Tesaṁ kho panānanda, caturāsīti pallaṅkasahassānaṁ ekoyeva so pallaṅko hoti, yaṁ tena samayena paribhuñjāmi yadidaṁ sovaṇṇamayo vā rūpiyamayo vā dantamayo vā sāramayo vā.  
Of those 84,000 couches, I only used one, made of gold or silver or ivory or heartwood.
Tesaṁ kho panānanda, caturāsīti nāgasahassānaṁ ekoyeva so nāgo hoti, yaṁ tena samayena abhiruhāmi yadidaṁ uposatho nāgarājā.  
Of those 84,000 bull elephants, I only rode one, the royal bull elephant named Sabbath.
Tesaṁ kho panānanda, caturāsīti assasahassānaṁ ekoyeva so asso hoti, yaṁ tena samayena abhiruhāmi yadidaṁ valāhako assarājā.  
Of those 84,000 horses, I only rode one, the royal horse named Thundercloud.
Tesaṁ kho panānanda, caturāsīti rathasahassānaṁ ekoyeva so ratho hoti, yaṁ tena samayena abhiruhāmi yadidaṁ vejayantaratho.  
Of those 84,000 chariots, I only rode one, the chariot named Triumph.
Tesaṁ kho panānanda, caturāsīti itthisahassānaṁ ekāyeva sā itthī hoti, yā tena samayena paccupaṭṭhāti khattiyānī vā vessinī vā.  
Of those 84,000 women, I was only served by one, a maiden of the aristocratic or peasant classes.
Tesaṁ kho panānanda, caturāsīti vatthakoṭisahassānaṁ ekaṁyeva taṁ dussayugaṁ hoti, yaṁ tena samayena paridahāmi khomasukhumaṁ vā kappāsikasukhumaṁ vā koseyyasukhumaṁ vā kambalasukhumaṁ vā.  
Of those 8,400,000,000 cloths, I only wore one pair, made of fine linen, cotton, silk, or wool.

Yaṁ kho pana, bho, tena samayena mahāgovindo brāhmaṇo gāmaṁ vā nigamaṁ vā upasaṅkamati, tattha rājāva hoti raññaṁ, brahmāva brāhmaṇānaṁ, devatāva gahapatikānaṁ.  
And at that time, whenever he arrived at a village or town, he was like a king to kings, like Brahmā to brahmins, like a deity to householders.
Ye kho pana, bho, tena samayena mahāgovindassa brāhmaṇassa sāvakā sabbenasabbaṁ sāsanaṁ ājāniṁsu.  
Those of his disciples who completely understood the Great Steward’s instructions, bho → pana (bj, sya-all, km, mr)
Ahaṁ tena samayena mahāgovindo brāhmaṇo ahosiṁ.  
I myself was the brahmin Great Steward at that time.

Ekodakībhūtaṁ kho pana, vāseṭṭha, tena samayena hoti andhakāro andhakāratimisā.  
But the single mass of water at that time was utterly dark.
Ye kho pana te, vāseṭṭha, tena samayena sattā passanti methunaṁ dhammaṁ paṭisevante, aññe paṁsuṁ khipanti, aññe seṭṭhiṁ khipanti, aññe gomayaṁ khipanti:  
Those who saw them having sex pelted them with dirt, clods, or cow-dung, saying,
Adhammasammataṁ kho pana, vāseṭṭha, tena samayena hoti, tadetarahi dhammasammataṁ.  
What was deemed as unprincipled at that time, these days is deemed as principled.
Ye kho pana, vāseṭṭha, tena samayena sattā methunaṁ dhammaṁ paṭisevanti, te māsampi dvemāsampi na labhanti gāmaṁ vā nigamaṁ vā pavisituṁ.  
The beings who had sex together weren’t allowed to enter a village or town for one or two months.
Hīnasammataṁ kho pana, vāseṭṭha, tena samayena hoti, tadetarahi seṭṭhasammataṁ.  
What was deemed as worse at that time, these days is deemed as best.

‘mahā nūna tena samayena kolo ahosī’ti.  
at that time the jujubes must have been very big.
‘mahā nūna tena samayena taṇḍulo ahosī’ti.

Ye kho pana, pāpima, tena samayena manussā kālaṁ karonti yebhuyyena kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā apāyaṁ duggatiṁ vinipātaṁ nirayaṁ upapajjanti.  
Most of the people who died at that time—when their body broke up, after death—were reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell.
Ye kho pana, pāpima, tena samayena manussā kālaṁ karonti yebhuyyena kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā sugatiṁ saggaṁ lokaṁ upapajjanti.  
Most of the people who died at that time—when their body broke up, after death—were reborn in a good place, a heavenly realm.

Appakā kho tumhe, bhaddāli, tena samayena ahuvattha yadā vo ahaṁ ājānīyasusūpamaṁ dhammapariyāyaṁ desesiṁ.  
There were only a few of you there at the time when I taught the exposition of the teaching on the simile of the thoroughbred colt.

‘añño nūna tena samayena jotipālo māṇavo ahosī’ti.  
‘Surely the brahmin student Jotipāla must have been someone else at that time?’
Ahaṁ tena samayena jotipālo māṇavo ahosin”ti.  
I myself was the student Jotipāla at that time.”

‘añño nūna tena samayena rājā maghadevo ahosi, yena taṁ kalyāṇaṁ vattaṁ nihitan’ti.  
‘Surely King Makhādeva, by whom that good practice was founded, must have been someone else at that time?’ yena taṁ kalyāṇaṁ vattaṁ nihitan’ti → yo taṁ kalyāṇaṁ vattaṁ nihinīti (si) "
Ahaṁ tena samayena rājā maghadevo ahosiṁ.  
I myself was King Makhādeva at that time.

Tesaṁ kho pana, bhikkhu, caturāsītiyā nagarasahassānaṁ ekaññeva taṁ nagaraṁ hoti yamahaṁ tena samayena ajjhāvasāmi—kusāvatī rājadhānī.  
Of those 84,000 cities, I only stayed in one, the capital Kusāvatī.
