Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo pharusaṁ vācaṁ pahāya pharusāya vācāya paṭivirato hoti;  
It’s someone who gives up harsh speech.

Pharusaṁ vācaṁ pahāya pharusāya vācāya paṭivirato hoti; yā sā vācā nelā kaṇṇasukhā pemanīyā hadayaṅgamā porī bahujanakantā bahujanamanāpā tathārūpiṁ vācaṁ bhāsitā hoti.  
They give up harsh speech. They speak in a way that’s mellow, pleasing to the ear, lovely, going to the heart, polite, likable, and agreeable to the people.

Musā bhaṇati, pisuṇaṁ bhaṇati, pharusaṁ bhaṇati, samphappalāpaṁ bhaṇati, kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā apāyaṁ duggatiṁ vinipātaṁ nirayaṁ upapajjati.  
They use speech that’s false, divisive, harsh, and nonsensical. When their body breaks up, after death, they’re reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell.
Na musā bhaṇati, na pisuṇaṁ bhaṇati, na pharusaṁ bhaṇati, na samphappalāpaṁ bhaṇati, kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā sugatiṁ saggaṁ lokaṁ upapajjati.  
They don’t use speech that’s false, divisive, harsh, and nonsensical. When their body breaks up, after death, they’re reborn in a good place, a heavenly realm.

‘appakaṁ, brāhmaṇa, jīvitaṁ manussānaṁ parittaṁ lahukaṁ bahudukkhaṁ bahupāyāsaṁ mantāyaṁ boddhabbaṁ, kattabbaṁ kusalaṁ, caritabbaṁ brahmacariyaṁ, natthi jātassa amaraṇaṁ.  
‘Brahmins, life as a human is short, brief, and fleeting, full of suffering and distress. Be thoughtful and wake up! Do what’s good and lead the spiritual life, for no-one born can escape death. lahukaṁ → lahusaṁ (ṭīkā) | mantāyaṁ → mantāya (sabbattha)

abhirūpā dassanīyā pāsādikā paramāya vaṇṇapokkharatāya samannāgatā nātidīghā nātirassā nātikisā nātithūlā nātikāḷikā nāccodātā atikkantā mānusivaṇṇaṁ appattā dibbavaṇṇaṁ.  
She was attractive, good-looking, lovely, of surpassing beauty. She was neither too tall nor too short; neither too thin nor too fat; neither too dark nor too light. She outdid human beauty without reaching divine beauty. mānusivaṇṇaṁ → mānusaṁ vaṇṇaṁ (bj, pts1ed); mānussīvaṇṇaṁ (sya-all, km)

Seyyathāpi, bhante, sovaṇṇo viggaho mānusaṁ viggahaṁ atirocati;

Pahāya mānusaṁ dehaṁ,  
After giving up this human body,

leaving behind the human life,

pharusaṁ vācaṁ pahāya pharusāya vācāya paṭivirato ahosi. Yā sā vācā nelā kaṇṇasukhā pemanīyā hadayaṅgamā porī bahujanakantā bahujanamanāpā, tathārūpiṁ vācaṁ bhāsitā ahosi.  
He refrained from harsh speech. He spoke in a way that’s mellow, pleasing to the ear, lovely, going to the heart, polite, likable and agreeable to the people.
Abāḷhaṁ giraṁ so na bhaṇi pharusaṁ,  
causing harm, rude, crushing the people.

Akaṇaṁ athusaṁ suddhaṁ,  
free of powder or husk, pure,

She is attractive, good-looking, lovely, of surpassing beauty. She’s neither too tall nor too short; neither too thin nor too fat; neither too dark nor too light. She outdoes human beauty without reaching divine beauty. nātikāḷikā → nātikāḷī (bj, pts1ed)

Pahāya mānusaṁ dehaṁ,  
After giving up this human body,

Pahāya mānusaṁ dehaṁ,  
After giving up this human body,

Ke hitvā mānusaṁ dehaṁ,  
Who, after leaving behind the human body,
Te hitvā mānusaṁ dehaṁ,  
They, after leaving behind the human body,

Ke hitvā mānusaṁ dehaṁ,  
Who, after leaving behind the human body,
Te hitvā mānusaṁ dehaṁ,  
They, after leaving behind the human body,

tasmiṁ pakkamate bhusaṁ;  
and have you violently beaten.

jahato mānusaṁ bhavaṁ;  
as you give up your human life,

vācāya pharusaṁ bhaṇaṁ;  
when speaking with harsh words.

Suṇanto pharusaṁ vācaṁ,  
that you put up with such harsh words

Kuddhāhaṁ na pharusaṁ brūmi,  
When I do get angry I don’t speak harshly,

Māgadhakānaṁ, bhikkhave, manussānaṁ appakaṁ āyuppamāṇaṁ parittaṁ lahukaṁ;

Idha, gāmaṇi, ariyasāvako pāṇātipātaṁ pahāya pāṇātipātā paṭivirato hoti, adinnādānaṁ pahāya adinnādānā paṭivirato hoti, kāmesumicchācāraṁ pahāya kāmesumicchācārā paṭivirato hoti, musāvādaṁ pahāya musāvādā paṭivirato hoti, pisuṇaṁ vācaṁ pahāya pisuṇāya vācāya paṭivirato hoti, pharusaṁ vācaṁ pahāya pharusāya vācāya paṭivirato hoti, samphappalāpaṁ pahāya samphappalāpā paṭivirato hoti, abhijjhaṁ pahāya anabhijjhālu hoti, byāpādapadosaṁ pahāya abyāpannacitto hoti, micchādiṭṭhiṁ pahāya sammādiṭṭhiko hoti.  
It’s when a noble disciple has given up killing living creatures, stealing, sexual misconduct, lying, divisive speech, harsh speech, talking nonsense, covetousness, ill will, and wrong view.
