Chapter 38

Thus have I heard:

At one time, the Buddha was at Anāthapiṇḍada's Park in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī.

At that time, the World-Honored One told the bhikṣus, "There are six kinds of constant power of ordinary beings. What are the six? Infants use crying as power. Before they can speak, they must cry first; Women use anger as power. After relying on anger, they then speak; Śramaṇas and brāhmaṇas use patience as power. They always think of being humble and inferior to others before they speak; Kings use arrogance as power. They use this authority to speak for themselves; Arhats use concentration as power to speak for themselves; The Buddhas and World-Honored Ones attain great compassion and use great compassion as power to benefit sentient beings. These are called, bhikṣus, the six kinds of constant power of ordinary beings. Therefore, bhikṣus, always contemplate and practice this great compassion. Thus, bhikṣus, you should train in this way."

At that time, the bhikṣus, having heard the Buddha's teaching, joyfully received and practiced it.
