Thus have I heard: |
At one time, the Buddha was at Anāthapiṇḍada's Park in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī. | |
At that time, the World-Honored One told the bhikṣus, "I will now explain the seven abodes of the gods. Listen carefully and keep it in mind!" | |
The bhikṣus replied, "Yes, World-Honored One!" | |
At that time, the World-Honored One told the bhikṣus, "What are the seven abodes of consciousness? Namely, sentient beings with various kinds of bodies and perceptions, such as humans and gods. Furthermore, sentient beings with various kinds of bodies but a single perception, such as the Brahmakāyika gods, who first appeared in the world. Furthermore, sentient beings with a single body and various perceptions, such as the Ābhāsvara gods. Furthermore, sentient beings with a single body and a single perception, such as the Śubhakṛtsna gods. Furthermore, sentient beings with immeasurable space, the Ākāśānantyāyatana gods. Furthermore, sentient beings with immeasurable consciousness, the Vijñānānantyāyatana gods. Furthermore, sentient beings with no abode, the Ākiñcanyāyatana gods. These are called, bhikṣus, the seven abodes of consciousness. I have now explained the seven abodes of consciousness. The Buddhas of the past have practiced and liberated sentient beings. Today, I have accomplished this. You should dwell in seclusion under trees and diligently cultivate your practice, without being lazy. This is my instruction." |
At that time, the bhikṣus, having heard the Buddha's teaching, joyfully received and practiced it. |
