Saṃyuktāgama (2nd)

Thus have I heard:

Once, the Buddha was at Anāthapiṇḍada's Park in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī. At that time, the bhikṣuṇī Vijaya, from the royal park monastery, put on her robe, took her alms bowl, entered the city to beg for food, finished eating, washed her bowl, put away her sitting mat, went to the forest of the blind, sat under a tree, and dwelled in the divine abode. At that time, Māra the Evil One thought: "The Śramaṇa Gautama is at Anāthapiṇḍada's Park in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī. The bhikṣuṇī Vijaya, from the royal park monastery, put on her robe, took her alms bowl, entered the city to beg for food, finished eating, washed her bowl, put away her sitting mat, went to the forest of the blind, sat under a tree, and dwelled in the divine abode. I shall disturb her." Having thought this, he transformed himself into a young brahmin and went to her, speaking a verse:

You are now at the peak of youth and beauty, and
I am also young. Let us enjoy the five desires together
indulging in pleasure. Why do you sit here alone, not joining me?

When the bhikṣuṇī heard this verse, she thought: "Who is this, coming to disturb me, so deceitful? Is it a human or a non-human?" She entered concentration to observe and knew it was Māra the Evil One. She spoke a verse in reply:

Let me indulge in music, dancing, and the other five desires
and give them all to you. They are not suitable for
me. All the pleasures of the human world, as well as
the five desires of the heavens, I will give them all
to you. They are not suitable for me at all. I
have cut off all craving, extinguished the darkness of ignorance, attained
the state of complete cessation, and abide in the undefiled Dharma
Therefore, know that Pāpīyān has lost.

At that time, Pāpīyān thought: "This bhikṣuṇī knows my mind well." He was distressed, remorseful, and ashamed, and returned to his palace.
