Thus have I heard: |
Once, the Buddha was at Anāthapiṇḍada's Park in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī. At that time, the bhikṣuṇī Vijaya, from the royal park monastery, put on her robe, took her alms bowl, entered the city to beg for food, finished eating, washed her bowl, put away her sitting mat, went to the forest of the blind, sat under a tree, and dwelled in the divine abode. At that time, Māra the Evil One thought: "The Śramaṇa Gautama is at Anāthapiṇḍada's Park in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī. The bhikṣuṇī Vijaya, from the royal park monastery, put on her robe, took her alms bowl, entered the city to beg for food, finished eating, washed her bowl, put away her sitting mat, went to the forest of the blind, sat under a tree, and dwelled in the divine abode. I shall disturb her." Having thought this, he transformed himself into a young brahmin and went to her, speaking a verse: | 一时,佛在舍卫国祇树给孤独园。

When the bhikṣuṇī heard this verse, she thought: "Who is this, coming to disturb me, so deceitful? Is it a human or a non-human?" She entered concentration to observe and knew it was Māra the Evil One. She spoke a verse in reply: | 时比丘尼闻是偈已,而作是念:「此为是谁?

At that time, Pāpīyān thought: "This bhikṣuṇī knows my mind well." He was distressed, remorseful, and ashamed, and returned to his palace. | |
