SA-2 313（三一三）

Thus have I heard:

Once, the Buddha was at Jetavana Anāthapiṇḍada-ārāma in Śrāvastī. At that time, a god named Kāma came to where the Buddha was. His radiance was brilliant, illuminating the entire Jetavana. He bowed at the Buddha's feet, then stood to one side and spoke a verse, saying:

What is the root of greed and anger? What
is the cause of pleasure, pain, and fear? Who
is it that the infant grasps at the mother's breast?

At that time, the World-Honored One replied in verse:

From love to the mind of self, like the nyagrodha tree, the
roots and tendrils grow from the earth, and then enter the ground
Each in different places, attached to love, giving rise to desire, also
like the mālu tree, binding and covering the forest trees. If one
knows its root, the yakṣa should abandon it, able to cross the
ocean of birth and death, crossing over and no longer accepting existence.

At that time, the heavenly son Kāma heard what the Buddha said, rejoiced, bowed his head to the Buddha's feet, and returned to his heavenly palace.
