SA 1314（一三一四） 度流

Thus have I heard:

At one time the Buddha was staying at Anāthapiṇḍada’s Park in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī.

At that time, a Kāmāvacara deity of exceptional beauty came to where the Buddha was in the latter part of the night, bowed his head at the Buddha’s feet, and sat to one side. His body’s radiance illuminated the Anāthapiṇḍada’s Park in the Jeta Grove.

At that time, the Kāmāvacara deity spoke a verse to ask the Buddha:

From what do greed and anger arise? Why do the body’s hairs
stand on end? From what do fear and terror arise? How do
perceptions and thoughts arise? It is like a child relying on a wet nurse.

At that time, the World-Honored One spoke a verse in reply:

Love gives rise to the growth of one’s own body, like
a nyagrodha tree, attaching itself everywhere, like a thicket of cottonwood
If one knows its cause, one will awaken and realize it
crossing the flowing sea of birth and death, no longer taking rebirth.

At that time, the god Kāma heard what the Buddha said, rejoiced, bowed his head at the Buddha's feet, and disappeared.
